  1. In the later stages of the game we didn’t offer enough of a threat in the forward areas to play the way we did. we were too open. We should have closed the space in between our defensive and midfield lines by dropping into a deeper shape and playing counter attack. Yes this may have invited more pressure in terms of crosses into the box but we defended that scenario well at Ibrox. Hart continually looking to play out quickly when the ball went dead was idiotic and points to a lack of leadership on the pitch and in the dugout. Why was he not told by Ange or Cal to slow the game down? Hart could have killed 3 or 4 minutes of that game easily but continually invited more pressure. Just watch how much time Craig Gordon kills this weekend.

Celtic don’t know how to kill a game , midfield forwards and both full backs look to get forward at every opportunity, big spaces left if the ball is turned over and better teams exploit this.

  3. One thing would help, take more chances against better teams when the chances come ,which they did yesterday as well as in the semi at hampden.

Good morning all from Govanhill. I wandered lonely as a cloud and espied hun fc in their funereal shroud.

Not a stumble, not a step forward, one of those hold…hold days. A frustrating constant this season has been how much work is required from us to get our goals.

Players keep giving us everything they have to offer, they must know at least as well us too many chances to score are passed up.

    Agreed with Rieperman’s comment yesterday.

Seeing Nye Bevan’s Rebel Soldier’s moniker reminds me every time – there hasn’t been a better book written by a British politician since In Place of Fear. Debts of Honour came close.

A morning call from BankieBhoy would be welcome, even though I believe his open water swimming happens further north than Skibereen

Watched the game in THAT London……….I was lucky to be in the company of some fine Spurs fans who have a gra for Timdom……………

Thems had to win. They didn’t.

We didn’t but thanks to Ange we edged closer to our shared objective…………………

When you think about how far we’ve come in such a short space of time and with a limited window of opportunity…it is indeed Good To Be a Tim…….

  11. Well done celts. The league’s in our hands. Good point yesterday. Massive game Saturday.

  12. Celtic Supporters should also stop taking away tickets for away games at Ibrox

Unless the Celtic coaching staff post material here or others who hold senior coaching certificates of course it’s unqualified, it’s a blog for comments from interested parties.

  14. Was listening to Radio Scotland earlier and specifically to Tom English about us and the Old Firm, about the game and the respective teams over the season. Talking of the deid lot, he was more than fulsome in his praise. Waxing lyrical doesn’t begin to describe his eulogising. When it came to us, almost through gritted teeth, he felt compelled to say that we deserved a draw and that our manager deserved to be Manager of the Year.

  15. ernie lynch on

I see Kris Commons being quoted as saying Celtic have a glass jaw. It’s a harsh assessment but perhaps there’s a germ of truth in it. For long periods of the game it was a jittery performance with a lot of unforced errors, misplaced passes and wild clearances. A learning experience though for the manager and the newer players.

Hopefully normal serviced will return for the Hearts game and we can all chill out.

Can’t say that I’m surprised at any of that with Bitton.

But he did get his usual booking.

  17. As the summer rebuild fast approaches, I had a wee look at what the Govan mob are facing

It appears that this summer Goldson, Davis, Arfield, McGregor and Balogun are out of contract. Next summer Kent, Morelos, Aribo, Jack and Helander.

That’s a lot of players who now have little or no transfer value.

  18. quadrophenian on

I like the concept of Nir Bitton as a calm, game-smart and composed deep mid with a bit of ‘don’t even try that’ about him plus a great eye for a line-splitting pass. But I’m in love with an idea, rather than a reality.

Unsure how this squares with the fact that – as a bit player – he is our most booked player since Ange arrived.

How can a guy be so chilled yet so rash when it comes to booking liabilities ?

I don’t think he’s an overtly durty player, while a mate reckons he’s a really shoitey tackler.

Ange seems to like ‘Niro’ a lot.

  19. A draw was a satisfactory result ,should have been better though that game should have been over in the first half , but once again a plethora of missed chances let them off the hook . our dropping out of games in the second half is still a worry ,as is playing against boot merchants with a lightweight midfield , ange seriously needs to address this area , I know I sound ungrateful for the position we are in ,nothing could be farther from the truth I only want s to be better , be stronger , and be able to get stuck into that mob . HH bhoys

  20. We do have a glass jaw.

We are not yet a settled squad.

How could we be after all the changes that we have had to make.

Starting 11 — only three players were with us last season — huge change.

We started slowly and scored a goal without breaking sweat.

Then our second big problem came to the fore — lack of a “killer” instinct.

Great play / good chances / finishing very lackadaisical — same all season.

We are not great defensively — not sure how the MF have been set up to play?

Anybody attacks us down the flanks and is our FB / Winger who do the defending.

Very little — sorry in the main nothing at all — support from the MF.

Always waiting for the MF to move one over to support the FB but it never happens.

JNPF / DM had nuisance value but no tackling threat.

So not good enough — especially when we had two back-ups at FB.

AR’s first sport is not football but he has a big heart.

GT is getting better but his recovery speed is still glacial.

CMcG is not a natural DM — he is trying to learn the position but it is hard going.

Both RH and MO’R look to be struggling with the emotional effort we demand.

Consequently they collapse mentally before they collapse physically.

NB is not who / what we need.

He looked like he had been on a crash diet when he came on yesterday.

Looks as if he has been ill recently or he is ridiculously over-trained.

TR never managed to get into the game — not on his eggs would be one way of describing his effforts — which was not the case last week.

Finally Ludge MIB did what they had to do.

Give the TFOD2.1 as much as they could without making it obvious.

Bookings were a case in point — the ones he missed for them were scandalous.

They practice for penalties — manufacturing contact and going down screaming.

We don’t but we need to start now — we are still a very naïve team..

Huge workload / effort required for next season.

Hopefully AP gets the support he needs.

  21. Great day yesterday, although it didn’t feel like it.

Important we really do strive to improve. Just expecting them to die in a ditch won’t win us next years title here never mind give us any Euro success

One of the biggest challenges is finding 2 good central defenders to complement Starfelt.

Assuming Julien is going that is more urgent a need as the oft mentioned left back upgrade.

  22. Just to finish my moan …

The Fan*ies need to be laughed out of P/head.

It was never going to end well but even after their monogrammed sweatshirts the street theatre with the GB takes them to a new low.

Erse wipe sniderism from a bunch of no-marks who need to grow up.

And then you have the shambles that is the “Standing Section”.

Unconscionable that the over crowding has been allowed to develop and then get worse.

Incredible how easy the lessons of Hillsborough have been allowed to be forgotten.

Now in plain sight and something needs to be done.

Rampant neo liberalism that needs to be stamped out.

  23. So many reasons why beating the Hertz to be sure of winning the league would be sweet next Saturday…….

Not least the symmetry of it being the first team we played this season and we lost 2-1 thanks to Madden and his linesman pal.

  24. After listening to and seeing CCV at Celtoc awards dinner last night I am certain he won’t be around next season. Sadly.

  25. prestonpans bhoys on

    Jimtim

Can’t disagree with what you say there. We had 9 shots but only 1 on target.

Now of the other 8 shots most would have been easier to place on target than ending up in row ZZ😵😱

  26. Since we’ve gone ahead in the league terms of real danger the last 25 minutes of yesterdays game was the first time we’ve been under sustained pressure. Our starting 11 included 8 players who have never won a Scottish premiership title (I didn’t include Joe Hart for obvious reasons). They included a team of players who won it last year, and lots of guys with a lot of experience, we had a lot of players with not much. An average age of nearly 30 versus 25

They had nothing to lose, we had plenty, a nerve shredding end to the game was guaranteed after they scored their goal out of nothing. They could commit men forward knowing that if we caught them on the break it wouldn’t mean anything.

At times of pressure you look to the coolest people for calm straight thinking, the temptation is to panic which leads to scrambled thinking. Calmac, Joe Hart and Ange were the most experienced Celts in the ground yesterday and their efforts to carry out the plan that they had been spending all season working on were invaluable in the end. When you’re at your most stressed is when it’s most important to have clear simple processes that you can go to automatically. Stress messes with your judgement, rely on your training and listen to the boss.

Titles are won and lost because of how teams deal with pressure. Yesterday’s experiences will be invaluable for the younger players. The reaction after, the disappointment among the players was a good sign. They knew they hadn’t performed well and finished the job but they’ll come out of it with those experiences to draw on.

The Huns still don’t showing any signs of having the mentality to deal with pressure and win the league. They were unchallenged last season, the Europa league shows they do best when least is expected of them. Malmo showed that in the Summer, it’s a systemic issue at Ibrox, it’ll be in the back of their minds until they do it. You can’t fake it

We look like we do have that mentality, we chased them down and now, so far, we’ve handled being chased. That’s down to the leadership shown by Ange and the senior players and the mentality installed in a new very young team by our inspirational Manager

I hope we keep hold of him for years, more of the same next season and there will be lots of clubs after him.

BURNLEY – got a link to CCV or summary of wot he said ?

Will be a big dent if we lose his presence and consistency IMO.

  28. B78 @ 10.58

They come / they go — the story of football.

If CCV builds a good career in football then 2021/22 will be the foundation of it all.

There are many reasons why he had played the little amount of good football as he had before us.

He will be part of a good defence somewhere but he will need 3 top players around him.

Hopefully we have started our scouting early.

    Great day yesterday,

    ——-

Agree with this and all else in your post.

CCV has had a full season in the ‘shop window’ and I think he will be lured by big money down south. He would be a great fit for either Leicester, Southampton, Bournemouth, or Fulham…..I’m sorry to say.

Jota? Well don’t what to think – a good season with many games started – again may be offski.

Still we will be champions when looking to replenish the squad and unload the ‘no chancers”. If we can do it from our position last year, we will surely do it this.

    The Future’s Bright – The Future’s Ange!!!!

    Yesterday was a seminal day.

  30. In terms of how we finished the game we needed to get hold of the ball and play in their half. We weren’t beating the press, punting the ball up the pitch meant it came straight back at us.

Moving the ball quickly before their press or man-marking got back into shape made perfect sense. The old fashioned thinking had managers telling their teams to resist the urge and fall back, these days it’s about playing in the opposition half and pressing them there effectively to stop them having time and numbers in dangerous positions

It’s counter intuitive and it takes great bravery but it does work

  31. Another v pleasing element of yesterday – very very noticeable how “together” both players and bench were yesterday – Ange, in an incredibly short space of time has bonded a disparate group of eclectic talents into a team………………..I’m looking forward to next season already!

    HH

  32. CELTIC40ME on 2ND MAY 2022 11:04 AM

Ange has little experience at this level of pressure and expectation. That game was as much a learning experience for him as it was for some of the players.

I’m surprised Rogic wasn’t on from the start, unless he’s not fully fit.

  33. In BR’s second season, we won the league I think at Pittodrie and went out the following weekend and got beat at Ibrox.

I remember seeing the huns celebrate like they’d won the league that day and just thought how sad they were to give such importance to a single match which meant nothing in terms of trophies.

There’s an element of our support like that as well and it was evident in their reaction to a 1-1 draw which left us as all but confirmed as league champions.

If you offered me the league next season but told me we wouldn’t win a single Glasgow derby, I would be delighted. I get the feeling though that there’s a section of our support who wouldn’t take that because of the importance they give to a derby fixture with a ten year old club.

  34. Re CCV

After Leicester conceded another goal from a set-piece yesterday Brendan Rodgers was talking about what needs to change for them start defending them better. They have a set-piece coach but also the worst record in the EPL. He said that the problem was mentality and aggression and when asked what could be done about it, whether it could be coached he said it was a personel issue that he would be addressing in the Summer. So new center backs

With Rodgers there’s always more to what he’s saying, but it did make me think about our supposed glass jaw and how few goals we concede from set-pieces these days. You never thought we’d concede one yesterday, we actually look more likely to score than concede these days which is done turnaround.

I don’t think CCV is good enough for a team that’s looking to challenge the top four, he’s a bit too wee and when Sakala ran at him yesterday he looked a little bit vulnerable against someone with real pace but his mentality can’t be questioned and his aggression has been invaluable in turning around the defense.

And maybe the defensive coaching isn’t so bad after all.
