Cliftonville for Celtic in Champions League qualifier

691

The opposition may be less-illustrious than Juventus. our last European opponents, but the importance of next month’s Champions League second qualifying round games against Cliftonville still got the pulse beating.

It is a good draw for Celtic, who are spared travel and associated challenges.

The first leg, at Celtic Park, will take place on 16 or 17 July with return in Belfast on 23 or 24 July. Don’t book travel until dates are confirmed.

Seen Cliftonville 3 times in the season past ans they are no mugs, my bhoy plays for their youth team….they are fit bhoys and will make it difficult for us.

They play on a 4g pitch and it is likely that the game will be moved to Windsor Park.

I hope we are fully focused on the game and given the first leg at CP we need to get a few in front…

Should be a great return and a warm welcome will be there for all hoops attending from the Cliftonville supporters….great city Belfast….keep to the right areas…..

Unfortunately, we are all away on holiday and will be watching both legs in Lanzarote

Given the right attitude we should progress and Cliftonville should make a few bob…

Think that tickets could be a problem. It may depend on the game being moved to a bigger ground and how many we get. As i said if I can Sean’s girl may be able to get some locally as she has loads of family in Andytown. I will keep us up to date where we stand once we know where the game will take place.

  5. From the comedy gold Bill McMurdo Blog this moring comes this wee gem:

“It is well-known that Rangers have extended favours to teams in the past. I remember two occasions from my boyhood when teams got end-of-season “surprise” results at Ibrox that helped them beat the drop”.

Surely Bill you’re not hinting that the Huns were involved in corruption by not trying?

I wonder which teams favoured by the Huns gained a sporting advantage?

    Huns, corruption, surely some mistake?

So we’re all off to Belfast in the green…

Good shout from whoever on this site, narrowed it down to about four teams, one of which was Cliftonville. Hopefully the start of another European venture. I know playing the qualifiers can be a real hastle, but last season they provided good preparation for the group stage, and will do again if we can get there. Good draw!

  8. An Fear Dearg on

Absolutely amazing draw for the Reds. Celtic, former winners of the competition, in the Champions League. For those of us who follow Celtic too it’s literally a dream come true.

Regarding the game in Belfast, the official capacity of Solitude is 2,180 though that includes the terracing under the old stand that can’t be used for UEFA games. The old stand itself is occasionally used for bigger domestic games but it too can’t be used in the Champions League. Temporary seating may be an option but the logistics around it may be unsurmountable.

Without any additional such seating the capacity will be 1,878. Which means that an alternative venue will at least have to be considered. Casement Park, the GAA venue in the west of the city, does not have a UEFA licence for its facilities, nor does it have many UEFA standard seats (it’s most concrete bench seating and terracing). And that’s even if the Antrim County GAA board would allow it to be used for “soccer”. And it’s all a moot point as it is now closed for renovation work.

I stayed in sand beech villas a coiple of times in teguise. Quiet place and good for you with the weans. The wind lulls you into feeling you aren’t getting roasted so beware…

Few nice bars and restaurants .

Pool areas are astro turf so good for the kids although walking into the pool very slippery so keep an eye on them there.

We stayed in the middle area on top terrace. Nice wee pub across road had sky sports for a wee afternoon pint.

  15. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

Some people talking of next round already. Let’s not be arrogant and presumptuous. Cliftonville are Champions and by all accounts are a bloody good team who play good football.

I don’t want to see or hear of over confidence in the ranks of our supporters. I’m sure as hell that Lenny won’t allow it to enter the mind sets of our players. We should treat The Reds with the greatest respect and not give their players any unnecessary additional motivation to beat us.

There’s a previous post that suggests the game will be played on 16 July. Can anyone confirm?

  16. TTT,

Costa Teguise is great, plenty of bars and restuarants, not far from bigger places. Usually mid 70’s.

Who did Sevco get in the draws? Oh that’s right they didnae qualify as they are a new club and don’t have 3 years accounts or UEFA membership.

The success of Bulmers cider in Ireland led to the development of the Magners brand to market the company’s cider outside of Ireland. Since H. P. Bulmer retained the right to market their original English Bulmers worldwide, the C&C Group needed a new name under which to market their international product. The concept was originally developed by Stuart Wootten, who argued that the international growth of Irish pubs provided a natural market for a drink such as Irish cider.[3] Irish Bulmers cider and Magners have the same label and are identical products, except for the name. The ciders are made from 17 varieties of apples, fermented and matured for up to two years.[4] It is available in 330 ml, pint, litre and 750 ml bottles and 500 ml cans, and is served over ice. It is also available in most Irish bars on draught and Magners is available in some bars on draught in Scotland. Initially only available in Spain, Northern Ireland and Scotland, the brand saw its popularity increase significantly in recent years and is now available across the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, Canada,[5] New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the United States.[1]

In early 2007, Magners Light, which is a low calorie version of the cider, was released.[6] In March 2009, a new perry (marketed as “Pear Cider”) called Magners Pear was launched[7] and in February 2010, Magners Berry was launched. The Berry variety is a blend of 17 varieties of apple, similar to Bulmers Original, fused with blackcurrants, raspberries and strawberries with an ABV of 4.5%. It is available in pint and “long neck” bottle in the licensed trade, and 500ml cans in grocery.[8]

The past 2 years has seen Magners release a variety of new products onto the market. Magners Golden Draught was released in 2010 which is a traditional “old style” crisp cider available purely on tap in the on trade market and 2011 with 3 special flavours consisting of Spiced Apple & Honey, Pear & Ginger, and Spiced Apple & Rhubarb available in supermarkets and bars.

I’m actually in Scotland on holidays for the home leg so chances are I might be able to see both games. Getting a ticket for Cliftonville will be much more difficult. Would love the game to be moved to Casement Park. 30,000 capacity and almost all standing. Would be a great party.

The old saying take one game at a time springs to mind Cliftonville will be no push over and if we approach it in the mind set that the 3rd Qualifying game is the important one we could easily find we dont get that far.Lets concentrate on getting a good crowd at Celtic Park for the first leg and a good result with it.Cliftonville I am sure will see this as there Barcelona moment we need to be up for what will be a tricky tie.H.H.

  22. forget about capacity of their ground, that’s their problem not ours, just let us play our leg at Celtic Park, doubt if there will be 20 thousand at CP

Although Magners in UK and Bulmers in Ireland are the same thing, Bulmers in UK is a different cider produced by a different company.

So the Bulmers he bought is not Magners.
