Cliftonville for Celtic in Champions League qualifier

691

The opposition may be less-illustrious than Juventus. our last European opponents, but the importance of next month’s Champions League second qualifying round games against Cliftonville still got the pulse beating.

It is a good draw for Celtic, who are spared travel and associated challenges.

The first leg, at Celtic Park, will take place on 16 or 17 July with return in Belfast on 23 or 24 July. Don’t book travel until dates are confirmed.

He turned us down, it’s unlikely his crystal ball forecast him being a better player or even in one piece for that matter.

  2. Let us hope that things will be a bit different than on a previous meeting of Celtic and Cliftonville.

In the 1980s when the clubs played a friendly in Belfast, unneeded and unwanted by either club’s fans, branches of the security forces turned up at the game.

Hardly a revolutionary rabble rouser, the late Desmond White alikened their conduct to that of the then notorious Gdansk riot police.

Artmedia was a team in decline, for various reasons, not that they had not given us many, many nights to remember, washed down with lashings of hunskelpings.

This Celtic team are on the up.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of the workings of the UEFA coefficient ranking system.

It seems strange all the same that coeff points continue to be attributed to a deid club. Maybe they are POSTHUMOUS UEFA points?

The annoying thing is that it is open to interpretation, and that is what NewCo cling to for their meagre credibility.

Anyway, the CL draw has given us all a wee buzz and I’m sure the Cliftonvile players and fans will be looking forward to this as much as us.

That’s what it’s all about after all!

  13. Tremendous Champions League draw. Delighted for both Clubs, question is where is it going to be played. One would expect that Cliftonville will want to make as much as possible out of it. I believe their regular gate is only about 1200, t’would pay them to bus their own support to Dublin. Probably just wishful thinking on my part. Windsor Park in July with 10,000 Celts in party mode would be a nightmare for the PSNI. It could be dangerous for supporters as well.

Whilst looking through the north of Ireland press to get a feel for their coverage of the Celtic/Cliftonville match I came upon this…..I’m sure its already been posted but for those, like me, who’d missed it I include it again….

  16. From the BBC site. NB No quotes and I was unaware Vic was `keen to leave Celtic`!!

“Representatives of Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama are in talks with Southampton after a fee in the region of £12m was agreed between the two clubs.

The Kenyan, 21, is keen to leave Celtic after two years in Glasgow but he has yet to agree personal terms.

It is understood there is also interest from Southampton’s Premier League rivals Cardiff City.

Wanyama joined Celtic for £900,000 from Beerschot in July 2011.

The Kenya midfielder has been tipped to move to a richer club since starring in Celtic’s Champions League group-stage win over Barcelona.

And manager Neil Lennon has admitted he might struggle to keep his top players despite back-to-back title wins.

In October, Lennon revealed that Wanyama had rejected the offer of a new contract beyond the four-year deal he signed when joining Celtic.

After Wanyama shone at Champions League level, Lennon had suggested that the player was worth £25m. “

Corkcelt – Solitude it is.Their chairman said on the radio that they could have sold out the gound ten times over, but they want their own fans to watch the game they have always dreamt about,on their own turf.

He also said that a lot of his own players are hardcore Celtic supporters, and they have been gifted the opportunity to play against their heroes at Celtic Park.

Seems it’s not all about the money for Cliftonville.

This could well be the most friendliest competitive game in the history of world football.

  18. 16 roads, Must say I’m amazed, in this day and age, for a small Club like Cliftonville to turn down the chance to earn mega bucks.

  19. Corkcelt,
