Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

  1. I just read the Pat Nevin interview and, contrary to what I was expecting, I have been surprised. Not by Pat’s spoken reasons for the various controversies (he could have, after all, made his apology on the same medium on which he made his accusation) but on the unspoken reasons with regards his son.

I admire the tact and sense he shows in not bringing this into the public domain and with BRTH’s discretion in leaving it out of the article. Though I was previously unaware of the problem (and it did take only a quick google to be enlightened about it), I hope all posters will show the same discretion and decency in not bringing this onto this forum either.

I still think Pat was dead wrong not to give voice to his discomfort on the BBC, on the next possible occasion on which he had the chance but, I am no longer as angry about his other reasonings, which are more self-sacrificing than traitorous.

The interview was worthwhile but the BBC actions need to be put back in the spotlight and the inadequate and misleading BBC handling of the complaint brought to light.

Pat Nevin never played for Celtic and is most commonly known as an ex Chelsea player, that being the case not sure I follow why we are all so interested in his views……what am I missing….

What the SNP would, or would not, do after Independence is a complete irrelevance.

The SNP, if they failed to disband, would be annihilated by the Scottish Republic’s electorate. They would no longer have any reason to exist. They would have achieved their only function.

They would be replaced by some form of Scottish socialist party or coalition that would reflect the way that Scots have consistently voted for more than half a century & who hopefully would make better use of this country’s assets than Wee Eck’s Sunday Post Party or their unionist predecessors.

    We have NOTHING to lose………..

I’d rather read gay/homophobic/unionist/republican/YES/NO/maybe posts than Nevin’s attempts to convince us that he was misunderstood.

G.G. 13.08 Thanks for the clip re the goals against Thistle. Really enjoyed it and yes “The Fridge” does look like a huge lump of a lad. Lets hope he makes it in the first eleven. The clip has whetted my appetite, I think a little trawl through YouTube to look at some of our special days/nights is in order. Think I’ll start with Naka’s free against Man Utd and see where my nose leads me from there.

Not too interested in the Nevin interview as the damage was done live on television during a national cup final.

Was more interested in the ‘We gotta get out of this place’ article on page 32.

Is this article an informed piece or simple kite flying?

If its the latter, its all well and good but we’ve had many a discussion on this issue over the last 15 or so years and to be frank unless theres something concrete in it this time I think we’d be best served focusing our attention on where we DO play and how we can improve our lot here instead of getting peoples hopes up about a structural change in football which isn’t even in the pipeline. It all comes down to the financial situation of course but clubs like Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts & Dundee Utd have good core support that should see them putting up a stronger challenge than they have been doing in modern times.

I think BRTH and Winning Captains should be applauded for not only getting the Pat Nevin interview, but for its production.

Some may not have noticed, but the mag is considerably late. This if February and the mag was due out last month. The Nevin interview was conducted a full 2 months before and was doubtless ready to go for deadline day.

Reading how carefully worded some sections are, I’ll bet some folk conclude that the delay in publishing was due to the need to get legal approval for the text. Read it again: A reasonable person might conclude that a lie BBC show was hijacked for the benefit of a malevolent agenda. That it was important to some (unnamed) persons that the ‘Sectarianism’ agenda be shifted away from Rangers. That a BBC employee was a key player in the scheme. That Rob McLean had prior knowledge of what was afoot.

Of course, I know the real reason for the late publication: BRTH was trying to get Pat Nevin back to the Grosvenor for another photo shoot because the first time the photographer missed BRTH’s boots.

    There.

The following is from an interview in the Guardian.

Did you fall out of love with Celtic? “That was for a different reason. That was all to do with the sectarianism. I have no great dislike or hatred, you don’t have that about a club you supported for 35 years, but I found myself sitting beside people who were saying things that I was very uncomfortable with politically and morally.”

After reading the article for a second time, I’m convinved he isn’t trying to convince us of anything. He actually still believes we were wrong to condeme him, he appears to be saying “why are you shooting the messenger”. He doesn’t except he did anything that he needs to apologise for.

A friend of mine in Scotland has wrote a song extolling the virtues of the great Celtic football club.

He has put them to the words of “Roll of Honour”.

Re patsy nevin interview: do you think he has learned his lesson yet?

He was obviously selected for his cameo role as he has displayed in the past a fortitude for criticising a group of celtic fans without thought. Two high profile events show that he is easily manipulated as a result of his infliction. Can we expect nevin to patsy up again in the near future?

    ==================================

Tommy in Glasgow got 2 interviews with Pat Nevin and only the second was pre-arranged;)

As these interviews were going ‘live to the world’ the answers came straight from the horses mouth, so to speak.

Nevin came across confused as to why Celtic fans would be have an issue with his comments and sidestepped quetions about songs etc, giving the old ‘ones as bad as the other’ routine.

I think he just looks at the issue in the much the same way the MSM in Scotland like to portray it. To be fair he did give Tommy a LOT of his time and took a little stick in the process but what it all boiled down to was a fundamental misunderstanding of the issues at play, on Nevins part.

Hutchbhoy. Galway Tourism provides an “Events” Calender online. I had a quick peep fro you and there was nothing listed for the dates you mentioned/ Galway is always fairly busy, a kind of “young peoples” City, always a bit of a buzz about the place. Try to get out around Spiddal & Leenane or maybe pop over to The Aran Islands, great spots indeed.

The current leadership of the SON will, in the event of a Yes vote, continue to control Scotland for at least a decade. Nothing we have seen so far suggests that it will be anything other than business as usual as far as sectarianism is concerned… ‘Ulster Unionists … Blood of our Blood, Bone of our Bone.’, ‘RFC woven into the fabric of our nation.’, criminal legislation which metes out sectarian justice exclusively to the Celtic support, a justice Secretary who thinks anthems of anti-Catholic hatred contribute to a ‘wonderful atmosphere’.
