Compper and our central defs, (G)Invincible

198

Leipzip central defender, Marvin Compper (32), us cup-tied for the Europa League but that is of little concern to Brendan Rodgers as he looks to reshape his team for the future. We are not buying for the Europa League, Celtic’s primary responsibility in each transfer window is to prepare for future Champions League qualifiers.

There is likely to be a bit of traffic in-and-out in central defence over the next couple of transfer windows. What Brendan needs before any activity gets underway is that he has sufficiently experience headcount in place to see him through to 1 September 2018.

We were in a very similar situation in June this year. Patrick Roberts was wanted back at the club, but there was never any certainty Manchester City would agree. That left James Forrest as the only right mid option – and James is not unfamiliar with an injury lay-off. As a consequence, we recruited Jonny Hayes early in the window, to increase our options at right mid from one to two.

There’s a good chance we are going to be shopping for a central defender in the summer, but we will be reluctant to sell any of the three seniors in the squad without an experienced addition.

Compper fits the bill. He is at the stage of his career where a former German international (albeit with limited experience of the NT) would consider a move to Scotland. He is three years younger than Kolo Toure when he joined, so we can hope for a bit more from him. It will be interesting to see what he is like on the deck.

    Corkcelt, lovely story.

Stories like that and the one tod by jimmynotpaul earlier, are always the best.

With regard to Paul Lambert , even if he had mentioned the Discount Option Schemes and EBT’s used , I would not have been so disappointed with his statement as I and no doubt many others feel.

This could possibly affect any coaching jobs he may have wanted with us in the future or will his ego only allow him to coach outside Scotland.

So Martin’s team R better than Brendans.

    Tommys team better than Martin’s

    Jimmys teams better than Jocks

    Willie’s team better than Jimmys.

And they R all better than Barnses team.

And Luigi’s team were better than Barnses also (just).

And nabody mention wee Gordy .

    Maybees aye Maybees naw.

  6. Said before DB is not the answer and 90% pass rate does not hide the felt that the other 10% of passed are either out the pitch or places the team in trouble, same goes for CG and his kicking and it speads uncertainty in the whole team. Sumonivic is the best centre back we have but cant build up a run in the team cause of injuries which impacts on his and the whole team. ES is to show and not the answer. CA might be the answer but young for a centreback.

Dont see how we can blame the whole midfield when they are having to chase back cause ball does not react them or played directly to opposition and they are changing back, they are on to a loser.

Hopefully the german lad can come in and and show calmness and leadership and if another one come up with a quality centre back then that sounds good to me.

We need a gk who can make better decisions about when to pass from the back and when to more it further forward.

Would not loss any sleep if CG, CG, ES, DB, SA and LH were moved on but then i am not the managed

  7. Was delighted like others on here to have received my copy of Jim Craig Right Back To 67. Special for me was that Jim wrote the dedication which I requested…’ To one who was there on 25th May 1967.’ He added Best Wishes. Hail! Hail! Jim Craig.

Thanks to Jim and to all who made it possible. The book is staying in my possession and not being let out to anyone.

  8. My guess is that Lambert believes what he reads in the Sun and hears from BFDJ, plus he’s thick as sh*t in the neck of a bottle.

I am fairly sure he couldn’t spell soop either.

  9. Rafi Honigstein talking up Compper on Sportsound. Says he spots danger before it happens and Leipzig made an exception from their usual signing policy of younger players to get him from Fiorentina. Manager decided he was what they needed to get promotion.

  10. Hearts new stand, being built with benefactors money,Why can’t our club ,build a new main stand, with benefactors, putting up the money,or is it people with cash, who prefer the freebies, without putting there hands in there pockets.

  11. Hate to say this as it sounds so corny but – tomorrow’s game with Thistle is HUGE – because we all think including me – that the crash at Tynecastle was a one off fluke – well tomorrows night will tell us if we are right or not. I actually dreamt that we got beat 1 nil – and I’ve never had a dream come true yet!

Hearts new stand estimated at £14-16 mil, how much for a new main stand at CP, i think it needs refurbished but a new stand ….?HH

I don’t think this is for nothing, didn’t think so when the bill was 2.5 and even moreso now the shortfall was 4.5m, the initial sum of 2.5m I think kept them in the black otherwise they had run out of money.

  14. A Celtic supporter who pays for the £49 Old Firm ticket, without batting an eye lid, is in the same Old Firm bed, as the Old Firm PLC board. They have sold all the souls and drank awe the soup and, Brendan Rodgers and his pub team skelping “Invincible’s” will not mask that betrayal of styoopit proportions. And, tae put the icing on the toxic betrayal cake, those plastic rebels fae the back ae the Parkheid bus, will shamelessly, bang thur wee drums and sing about setting Ireland free, then wave thur Palestine flags, then pat each ither own the back, then pay £49 for thur Old Firm tickets, then thull sing “Your not Rainjurs anymore!”……..ah mean, ah don’t know wurthur tae laugh ur greet ¿¿¿

  17. Development Squad Game, scoreless at half time.

From Tweets looks like Dundee had the better chances first half.

“Last night SFTB ‘annoyed’ me with his defensive stats – though a bit naughty including stats from friendlies-”

The only naughty thing is if you include friendly stats as a way of distorting the figures- I did not do so. The addition or omission of the friendly stats make no difference to the pattern noted.

It is important that, as far as possible, you compare like with like, so you either include the friendly results from BOTH seasons or you omit the friendly results from BOTH seasons. You seem to have assumed that the friendly results were included to distort the figures as it would be easier to get a clean sheet in a friendly than in a competitive game. Let’s see:-

2016/17- 2 clean sheets in 7 friendlies ( I included the 3 International Champions Cup fixtures as they are friendlies with a friendly cup at stake)

    2016/17- 1 in 6 CL qualifiers

    2016/17- 0 in 6 CL Group games

    The equivalent for 2017/18 is:-

4 clean sheets in 6 friendlies

5 clean sheets in 6 CL qualifiers

1 clean sheet in 6 CL group games

So, in summary, there were two more clean sheet friendlies which undercut the narrative that we are a poorer team this year than last but, far more significantly, there were 4 more clean sheets in competitive CL qualifiers also undercutting this narrative. And the Anderlecht away clean sheet this year is also better than we achieved at Group Stage level last year.

I think the figures show that there is no OBJECTIVE support for the view that we are poorer defensively this year but there are a lot of SUBJECTIVE opinions stating so.

And, in defence of myself and Celtic By Numbers, it is not the numbers or stats that lie- the numbers are innocent- it is the presentation of numbers that can mislead and that is man-led lying. I did no such thing- I compared the same data from both half-seasons.

I do not expect to have made much of a dent in the subjective narrative. People tend to want to believe what makes them happiest. For many, it is beyond doubt and beyond the influence of objective data, to believe that Celtic are poorer a year on.

  19. Some people’s bummf is other people’s thought provoking, don’t always agree with Kevj, but some of what he says is true, even if he would change the record, just my opinion though:-)))

  20. SFTB, Little doubt that quite a few of squad are not performing at last years level, I would go as far as to say in recent games only Brown & Forrest can be exempted from criticism.

However I genuinely believe the general standard in other teams in Scotland has also improved.

I watch as much Scottish Football as I possibly can, and I have been impressed by the standard this year.

  21. Fairhill Bhoy, did you hear the story of the Boy who cried Wolf.

I have absolutely no doubt that Kev is a highly articulate clever guy who has valid views and who is well capable of arguing his case.

However he has chosen to post in a certain repetitive manner day after day for years.

Why he does this I cannot pretend to know but it appears to me it is pure attention seeking.

At this stage I just scroll on by and I know plenty of others who do likewise.

  22. SFTB

I think you are taking my ‘ annoyance’ a bit seriously! I was very much making the comments as a lighthearted remark against myself. I do take myself awfully seriously at times and nobody is better at pricking the bubble of my self -importance than myself.

    Jimbo67

  23. FAIRHILL BHOY

never a truer word spoken .

I agreed with Kevj years ago on most points .

Same as i agreed with Neganon years ago , why repeat the same thing everytime you post , is it a fear someone might miss it .

I aaked Kevj politely if he was or did he know j”dopey” mcgown from blantyre hoping we could talk about the good old days … seemingly not … anyway might see you at the corner tomorrow .

  24. CORKCELT-I can only imagine how a group of players who know there better than the rest kept it going for 69 games, that takes some doing, especially when every team we faced wanted to be the team who finally stopped it,it was a cup final for every team

  25. JIMBOB on 19TH DECEMBER 2017 4:18 PM

Many Celtic Supporters, missed Sevco, and are very glad they are back,This 49 pound to see Sevco, might be to much for some ,but others would pay double that,

Celtic fans dont pay to see Sevco. They pay to see The Hoops gub any team that represents the horrible scum that follow them.Been watching these games for over 50 years, and could never tell you if any Hun player had a good game. They do not register.

  26. Really liking the new signing. Just what is needed.

I am not sure what this £49 concern is all about. Of course it is a lot of money but it is reasonably cheap compared to concerts and other premium events and there is consistently more demand than supply of tickets to see Celtic beat Sevco.

Most folks I know love that more than most other domestic games, for many it is the ultimate and those that don’t like it can simply avoid it.

Last I saw Sevco were trying to reduce the number Celtic fans got anyway which would lead to a big advantage to their team. They can sell their tickets anyway. Where is the end game from such a strategy ? I would love to know.

The guy on here continually suggesting Fans don’t go or the board can do something different sounds like someone whose girlfriend ditched him and he just wants to keep telling everyone she is ugly anyway to make himself feel better as he knows she has moved on and won’t have him back.
