Decision still to be made

294

When Celtic made the decision to offer Ange Postecoglou the manager’s job, the deal was done within 48 hours, most of which was spent dealing with his employer.

If nothing else, the club have been thorough this time. Candidates have been interviewed, including Brendan, who is without an employer, but there has been no rush to appoint.

Despite having a strong offering and good applicants, there is nervousness at board level, these decisions have huge consequences.

All you and me know for sure is that the decision has not been made, despite affirmation to the contrary.  There’s no way Celtic are sitting on a decision.

“He’s an excellent coach but he also demands complete control. And he’s not coming back to Celtic to be successful and let anyone else take the credit.”

    ————————————-

Agreed he’s excellent but he never demanded complete control at Liverpool and I don’t know, for sure, if he had it at Leicester. It might suit him to have a ready get out clause for signings that go wrong- for every failure like Shved or Arzani (injured) that got laid at BR’s door, there was a Gamboa, De Vries and maybe even a Kolo Toure (good dressing. room presence like Scott Bain but contributed little in playing time) that can be laid completely at Brendan’s hands.

I wasn’t suggesting that BR would “let” anyone take the credit- merely that he would/will utter this as BS smokescreen to the fans and that this time, the Board will have known about this in advance. It’s not what BR will be saying to the clubs he leaves us for.

I don’t believe there is enough money in Scotland to keep BR tethered to Celtic beyond an 18 month/2 year period.

If successful, this could still be good for us.

  2. Brendan Rdogers is a genuine first class manager. He may not be a Celtic fan to the extent that we all are but make no mistake about it, we’re only capable of getting a man like him to Scotland becaue he has a genuine affection for the Club. He’s a superb appointment and an upgrade. Roll on next season !

Who do you think on the board would be opposed to Rodgers becoming manager?

Agreed he’s excellent but he never demanded complete control at Liverpool and I don’t know, for sure, if he had it at Leicester

Rodgers fell out with with the owners at Liverpool over transfers, he was unhappy with the system they used for signing players and he wouldn’t play players that were signed by the committee until he was threatened. He was also a t a bigger club where the power dynamic was less. heavily weighted in his favour

He doesn’t like working under a Director of Football, he’s said so himself, he doest like the idea of the role.

He didnt have the choice at Leicester – they use a management structure with a DoF. But it didnt stop him from falling out with him when he didnt get what he wanted.

Its just his M.O. and its part of what makes him successful but its also a problem for every club he works at.

I dont think he cares about how transfers are perceived, he’s all about league finishes, trophies and “success” on the pitch. Which is,again, fair enough, you want a winner, but he wont be interested in the whole picture with selling players before he sees the best of them on the pitch.

He takes a long-term view on his career but not on the club he’s at. I dont think its a healthy outlook for a Celtic manager.

“I wasn’t suggesting that BR would “let” anyone take the credit- merely that he would/will utter this as BS smokescreen to the fans and that this time, the Board will have known about this in advance. It’s not what BR will be saying to the clubs he leaves us for.”

I think you’re too trusting. He could say anything to the board to get the job but he left last time without saying a word to anyone. I’d be more inclined to think he’d do the same again than make some sort of selfless comments about others being responsible for the success.

And remember, last time he tried to take Kennedy and everyone else with him. What makes you think he wont do it again?

I don’t see how the CEO or DoF stay out of football contract negotiations. The manager is never given a free hand at any club to set salary levels, differential, wage caps, size of squad etc; Giving anyone that freedom is surely madness. They could bankrupt an EPL club in a few years and it would take less time with an SPFL club.

The Board and CEO will have an input on setting a budget, a squad size and an outline agreement on maximum salary and differentials within the squad.

We are a long way away form the Brian Clough era where a manager could tell a hapless Chairman to Feck Off- I’ll sign who I like and pay them what I want and if you don’t like it I’ll leave.

There has to be co-ordination and agreement between the two sides- not secrecy and resentment- and certainly DD, at least, will set boundaries and limits on any manager. Brendan will not and cannot be a lone wolf. He should not get unwanted players imposed upon him but if he cannot get his primary target at the fee and wages we are prepared and able to pay, he will have to work through his back up targets or go without.

He cannot operate on a “just pay them whatever they are asking for, whatever they want” policy. That is madness.

We are an SPFL club, a big one, but still an SPFL club- even with an ex-EPL manager

Gotta go now- wine, fruit and bread in the sun is calling me

Interesting how roles change during negotiations. You have to say all the right things to get in the door, on the list, and be the last man standing.

BR won’t stay beyond 2 years and I’m reconciled to that fact. If we use the time to accumulate more trophies, revenue and reach into Europe, and establish a more 21st century approach to running a club for the wee guys outside the big 5 leagues, I’ll be happy.

ATM, by luck and design, he’s available. Brings a terrific pedigree and some risks. That description will probably match all those I want to manage our club in the years ahead.

So he demands complete control and no interference but no-one gives him that.

I don’t think Celtic should either- he had a bigger market to work with at Leicester but, for every success, like Castagne, there was a Daka, Praet, Perez, Westergaard, Soumare, Kritiansen.

Since they won the League in 2016, Leicester spent £491m and are now in debt to a level of £92.5m. Not all of that is down to BR but his track record is mixed at best. Brendan has a good squad to develop and he does that part of the job well. I think he needs help with transfers.

  14. We have guaranteed CL money this season. If BR delivers a title and entry into the CL again in 2024, the Huns will be on their knees for years to come.

Is there any other candidate more likely to deliver us that title?

A rookie like Maresca or McKenna may be a better long term bet but BR is the one most likely to keep our boot on their throat long enough to cause irreparable damage.

We go in with eyes wide open., he is not the Messiah but he is the best guy for the next couple of seasons.

So he demands complete control and no interference but no-one gives him that.

Theres the constant conflict that having BR, or someone like him as your manager brings. He kicked against how Liverpool bought players at Liverpool and then wouldn’t. play them, brought in Congerton at Celtic and Leicester.

His record at Leicester was terrible, but that doesnt mean he will. accept “help” or not demand he has control.

He’s not a team player, he manoeuvres however he can to get what he wants. Its pretty standard stuff for someone as intelligent, egotistical and ambitious as him.

If you can harness it to your own benefit it can make for a lot of success but dont expect him tone left holding the baby when the success dries up

Don’t know much about the “candidates” other than BR.

I have reservations about appointing BR but he has proven in the past that he can beat the hun and win trophies in Scotland. On balance, that makes him the best choice at this time as far as I can see.

I’ll be supportive of him but also don’t trust that he will stay too long.

We need to be prepared for the day when he walks out again but in the short to medium term he can keep our domestic supremacy going.

I apologise for my “sad sad man” comment. No need for that.

As non-executive Chairman, PL doesn’t even have a vote in the boardroom, except where the board is split down the middle, in which case PL, as chairman, gets the casting vote.

When it comes to a board vote to ratify a job offer to BR, there is no way that the board will be split, so PL has no say and no power to stop it.

In any case, people saying PL doesn’t want BR anywhere near Celtic is idle speculation.

    Afternoon all,

    My bad, priorities all wrong.

At risk of spouting and running pray indulge me while I spit out bullet points of uninformed nonsense.

Have known a few bitter people in my time.

    None of them were happy.

Something to do with being bitter perhaps?

Those who let go of their bitterness became happier.

    Go figure

    War, battle – yawn.

Two strong personalities (egos?) clashed partly due to weak org structure and lack of clarity or acceptance of who owned what.

That structure much stronger now than four years ago.

Pedro can stay in his box.

Brendan can get his toys and influence.

The “bewildered by welcome mat” line is, IMHO, being overplayed and misses the mood music of the majority.

    – most liked and admired BR

    – most were disappointed he left

    – most were upset by the manner and timing of that departure

    – most did NOT feel his departure warranted a charge of treason to be followed by hanging, drawing and quartering. Rather they dusted their souls down and got on with supporting Celtic.

    – most think he’s a decent coach.
