Decision still to be made

294

When Celtic made the decision to offer Ange Postecoglou the manager’s job, the deal was done within 48 hours, most of which was spent dealing with his employer.

If nothing else, the club have been thorough this time. Candidates have been interviewed, including Brendan, who is without an employer, but there has been no rush to appoint.

Despite having a strong offering and good applicants, there is nervousness at board level, these decisions have huge consequences.

All you and me know for sure is that the decision has not been made, despite affirmation to the contrary.  There’s no way Celtic are sitting on a decision.

  4. Paul67 on the radio is just expressing surprise at how accepting most of the support are about having BR back.

If BR does come back, he’s in a win:win situation.

If he/we do well- BR gets a restored rep and a quicker return to a decent EPL club.

If he does badly- lack of Board backing will be successfully cited to the support as the explanation. It feeds our confirmation bias.

BR might still get back to EPL in those circumstances but it will be to a lower than Leicester type club.

  5. Lawwell will be going nowhere fast.

What an honour it is to be chairman of Celtic plc.

he will be there as long as he wants.

  6. In my opinion, negotiations with Brendan may be slightly more prolonged than last time

Alongside the usual (salary, bonus, image rights, severance etc) both sides may look to protect themselves from any perceived wrongdoing by the other last time.

I’m fairly comfortable at the moment.

I reserve the right to post a rant on Saturday re the unacceptable delay in appointing a new manager, however.

Well you have just summed up how ridiculous our board are then.

How can a club possibly be run in a forward thinking modern progressive way when one of the board can decide to stay as long as he wants!!

  9. Paul67 again not shying away from an unpopular opinion. Always good to have well-considered intelligent takes regardless of how uncomfortable it might make you feel.

I’m with him, I can’t get my head around how welcome he is.

No doubt Paul wont let his view on it affect his support for Celtic.

  10. I’ll translate – “Ok, looks like I’m wrong on this one so I’ll hedge my bets and say they are still deciding and will shift my stance further when the announcement is made.”

If we assume BR is smart, (and he is), he will be ensuring that the pre-conditions this time are water-tight; i.e. no interference from Pedro in team affairs/transfers. Crossing t’s and dotting i’s will be in progress and an announcement will be made to the Stock Exchange first so expect nothing till tomorrow or Friday.

If Brendan is back and Lawwell is back- nobody has won a war.

Going with how dejected the blog header from P67/Lawwell reads id say that it perfectly sums up who has won the battle.

The bitterness was there for all to read.

There is a downside in BR making the conditions too tight for the Board to bail on them.

That is, the Board may be wanting to make equally tight conditions on BR bailing mid-season too.

My best read of the noise we have is that Brendan has other options and is hoping they offer him a way out of a return but, if they don’t come through soon, Celtic will be an acceptable back up for him. He can read the noise that fans are, mostly, ready to have him back. He is likely to be playing a Manager-Nanny role to either Scott Brown or John Kennedy so he has a ready made plan for bailing again. If we do well, he just announces- most of this is down to Scott & John- it’s now up to them to take the controls – I don’t want to be a shadow over them so I will remove myself to Wolves/Fulham/Burnley/Palace to get out of their road.

Pure specualtion on my part, of course.

Not right away, but in time.

I just can’t see Rodgers accepting the position with Lawwell still on the board.

If you remember Lawwell briefing Chris McLaughlin slagging Rodgers the evening before the Athens champs league match then the battle was in full swing.

Previous to that Rogers had told the media that Lawwell was signing players hat he (Rodgers) didn’t want.

    Lawwell won that battle.

But I expect that Rodgers will now see Lawwell off from the board.

  19. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX on 14TH JUNE 2023 1:18 PM

Rodgers is never doing that. Unless he’s had a huge personality change it would be crazy to appoint him on the basis of that agreement, the board aren’t stupid, they’ve had direct dealings with his m.o. before

He’s an excellent coach but he also demands complete control. And he’s not coming back to Celtic to be successful and let anyone else take the credit.

As long as Celtic and BR’s interests converge then it works. Once they dont then it starts to not work.

The Board know all this, they’ll be going into it with their eyes wide open about him, and they’ll be doing a calculation about for how long the benefits will outweigh the drawbacks.

Personal rivalries wont come into it. Its just business.

This has to be one of P67’s most Rumsfeldian missives of all time – ranks up there with the likes of:

“We also know there are known unknowns — that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”

All this smoke-screening does is confirm it’s not Muscat whose employers would have the deal done within 2 days.

I’ll have Brendan back easily; heaps of experience, bit of charm, has set out teams well against the world’s best.

But with all the great groundwork done by Ange and the recruiting team, I’m spooked that Brendan will pursue a Fortnum and Mason’s quality transfer pursuit while we operate on a distinctly Daiso-like budget. Mibby that’s the nervousness right there?

Let’s not ‘Leeds and O’Leary’ this eh, Celtic !!

  26. One thing that wont be welcome for me at least is the return to constant discord on the blog, which is almost a given if he gets the job.

I know I’ve been involved in some over the years but I wont be hanging around if it becomes too much

  27. Given that the bookies think BR is a cert whilst Paul says no decision has been made, could he give us the names of a couple of other candidates in the fray so we can all make a few quid ?

Apart from Maresca, everybody is 20/1 and more.

Mourinho is 200/1 and while I can’t stand him, he would be great at winding up the Huns.

Apologies if my reply came across as disrespectful or dismissive. A bit caught up in the general mood today

  29. At least Paul didn’t burst into tears during that interview.

Hopefully hostile board members don’t get to scupper the deal even at this late stage.

    Rodgers fits our bill perfectly.

T, I agree that there will be some conditions on both sides but the important one for BR, and future managers, is that the decisions on footballing matters stay with the footballing department, not the Chair or CEO. I think that’s the crux of the matter.

That and also the fact that the PR team will be pulling together an agreed script that sets these Ts&Cs out for fans and the media to digest once the deal is done.

Both egos will co-exist and will, in my view, be kept apart as far as possible in the background whilst both smile and hug each other in public. Both are too professional to behave otherwise.
