Don’t bet, tardy payers and immersed in our culture

1179

Quick question for you.  Which Scottish team has won their last four home games, scoring 13 goals in the process?  St Mirren are on a run of form at home.  One of those wins was against Second Division opposition, but remember, this season, Second Division teams are on a par with AC Milan in the early 90s.

Ross County scored four at St Mirren Park but St Mirren scored five, while Hearts were despatched 2-0.  This is a team with good home form who kept their squad in place over the international break.  My best advice to you is to avoid betting on this one.

Many clubs have trouble paying their bills but the problem with Hearts and their regular tardiness when it comes to wages, evident again this month, appears to be different.  Hearts cash balances will have peaked weeks, possibly months, ago.  From now on they will be eating into ‘reserves’, or more likely, accruing additional debt at their owner’s bank.  The club have been here many times before and Vlad has dipped into the equivalent of his commercial pocket to avoid an insolvency event but I’ve always found it curious why he didn’t do so on time.  It’s not as though anyone can be surprised pay day is coming.

As such, there appears to be a degree of control over late payment.  The money is always provided but not before pain is passed down from owner to earners, which is a bit curious.

For all his faults, and they are many, Romanov and other shareholders in Ukio Bankas have ‘invested’ countless millions in Hearts, money they are unlikely to get back with the residential property market so depressed.  They have also not exposed the club to outrageous fortune – the overwhelming majority of debt is owed to the bank itself, balances at HMRC and other creditors are low, and they pay their football debts.  This means that if Hearts go into administration, the route back through a CVA would be clear.  The only serious losers would be staff made redundant, while Ukio would face a write-off, perhaps already acknowledged internally.

I was surprised at the news Danny McGrain was appointed first team coach yesterday but also delighted.  Danny’s was not a name mentioned for the position when Alan Thompson left the club but he is immersed in the fabric and culture of our club.  ‘In the days of changing ways’ a strong thread of continuity is an invaluable asset in ensuring the new generations acquire the important elements of our identity.

We are a club in touch with all that is important.

  1. OK

The party line seems to be that no Celtic fan ever sang or said anything inappropriate about the Ibrox disaster.

And anyone who claims otherwise is a liar.

  2. I have sung many songs whilst attending games some of them scandalous and repugnant but I have never heard anything about the Ibrox disaster being sung similarly I have called that lot many things some of which was downright sectarian when I was younger I have used the full gammet of expression but I had never heard the word Daleks being used as an insult or description of that lot until I read it in connection with leggat a couple of weeks ago

If you look back, almost every one of those who posted that they had not heard the song acknowledged that a minority, or individuals, may have said or sung things we all wish they hadn’t. You, on the other hand, claim that people who frequent CQN are not representative of our club’s supporters. Could you tell us in which ways we are different from the norm?

Invercelt – I read your post with interest.

I have no knowledge of what the SNP is like inside or what their founders were like. So I take what you say as true.

My point isnt about the SNP but the latent sectariansim in this country. Once unfettered it will run riot – and the tendancy within the current SNP is to pander to it. Hence Salmond’s interjections to save the Sevconians, but more startling the new bill to introduce political sectariansim. Tell me what did that new bill say about Scotland?

As for smears against the SNP – dont make me laugh – I get the Sunday Herald delivered and every week they attack anyone who crtiicises the SNP. It has become a pro-nationalist comic and there are politicians who will tell you that the SNP smear campaigns are incredibly nasty.

    ……….

You seem to forget that when we get an Independent Scotland, after the transition period till the first elections, thed SNP will cease to exist and the main Political Partries in Scotland will be Labour, Lib Dems, Tories and the Greens.

It was a more naive time and, even to a liberal minded young man like myself, our chant did not sound bad at the time. We would have been appalled to have been thought racist for singing it. However, it only took a few years for us to get better educated and realise that this was far from an innocent ditty and it had the potential to offend.

I did not attend the infamous Mark Walters match but, by that time, we had no excuse, and it was an overtly racist response by a few of ours. What impressed me most was that, at around the same time, in our Centenary Year 1988, we put on a play at The Pavilion, The Celtic Story, which contained an electrifying scene, wherein an elderly Celtic fan castigates his grandson(?) for finding the bananas incident humorous. It may have been agit-prop theatre but it raised awareness among our support and, I believe, helped us behave better, even during our dark days in the 90s. We used our moment of weakness to educate and make ourselves better.

Where is the Rangers’ equivalent? Where is their centenary play, reflecting back to them their pride in their club? Where do they hold up the Barca riots, the Manchester riots, The Famine Song etc; as examples of attitudes and behaviours they must, not only ditch, but oppose?

I have never heard singing about the Ibrox Disaster though I ‘ve heard bigoted and racist songs from Celtic fans.

In the 70s Celtic fans sang “I’d rather wear a turban than a sash” as well as”i’d rather be a darkie than a hun” – casual racism was common on the terracings. As well “Get it up you while you’re young” towards any female who appeared in the sight of the crowd. In Scotland some probity existed and we never heard what I assume was an English fans’ version ‘Get your tits out for the lads” – oh how we all laughed!

In Scotland, a level of acceptability on the terracings of a degree of racism ended in Scotland when Mark Walters played. His first Celtic game at Celtic park was a shameful one for many. As well as at least three (three too many) fans, that I saw and counted, dressed up as monkeys there was the bananas thrown from The Jungle and the attempts to start a monkey chant on the first occasions Mark Walters received the ball. They were swiftly dealt with by the vast majority and I don’t think there has been organised racist chanting since.

I still have heard the odd racist comment among Celtic fans and in relation to ex-Rangers fans a wide range of sectarian and bigoted abuse.

I have never heard songs about the Ibrox disaster.

I was having a wee peek at that link that Mort put up earlier and mate in the early days of CQN you were mean. Good stuff and brings back memories if you are interested.

Thanks for re-posting that link. I meant to read it yesterday. And coming with your endorsement, I am definitely going to read it today.

  10. Ernie, whatever you do, DO NOT post the words of a song YOU dont know, but claim to know of. If LEGGO is lurking, he’ll cut & paste the post to perpetuate the propaganda he peddles about us.

I personally was not aware of any song about the disaster, until now!

Can’t believe we’ve allowed this creep to lower ourselves to his level of intellect.

Is it too controversial, do I run the risk of being called a liar, if I venture to suggest that different Celtic forums represent different demographics of the support?

To be fair it’s a point the SNP seem to forget when they promise all the things they’ll do if Scotland leaves the UK.

    Take, for example, nuclear weapons.

Who is to say that the main political parties will adopt stances any different to those they have now?

  14. Greenjedi – this is an argument that one of my staunch nationalist friend uses all the time – that the SNP will dissappear and then its up to us who we vote for.

Well that may or may not be true but it kinda misses the point. The point I am making is that there is very real and currently suppressed anti catholic sectarianism in Scotland. Any movement to independence tends to allow these things to resurface and we are smallish minority in this country. Furthermore the fact that the political sectarian bill was allowed to get passed shows you that common sense is thin on the ground when it comes to these matters.

Kitalba – what link was that. I remember having some interesting debates back then!! I was a bit younger and some of the edge has gone I’m afraid :)

  15. ernie,

This is not about honesty: you think CQNers are unrepresentative of the wider support. I want to know what you base your assertion upon. Are those who frequent KDS typical in some way that we are not? What is the CQN demographic? Are we older, younger, poorer, wealthier, too middle-class, too working-class, or what? Do we sing the wrong kind of songs? Do we not attack the Board as much as others?

I’d guess that the transition period would be one to two years and nuclear weapons would be gone in a matter of months (if it even takes that long as no sane foreign government would allow another country to look after their nucs).

That transition period is also plenty of time to set up a constitution/template that would follow. Whoever wins the first election, be that Labour, the Tories (how big a bump coould they get if they were no saddled with the yahoo brigade down south?) or perhaps a new party will form and be the dominent force.

But lets be honest, who can tell the difference in all the Governments/PMs that have run the UK since 79? They are all a prewtty identical in philosophy and policies

I have been offline for much of the last fortnight, though keeping up-to-date via my sister while I visit the folks back home.

Thoroughly enjoyed you rubbishing the independence debate, but miffed that I could not be there to lend you a hand-like you needed it,haha!

    BUT………

I really canny let your comment (above) go unchallenged.

I have watched Celtic for well over forty years, and have NEVER heard a comment such as you describe.

My Dad is sitting across from me,he was at the game,he says that he also has never heard such a comment.

Simple reason,Ernie,is that ANYONE coming out with such a comment would be forcefully reminded why he should have kept quiet.

If you still insist that such comments have been made in your company, then perhaps that is because those people felt they was safe to do so.

They certainly would not feel safe to do so in my company, nor of my Dad and his pals.

Nor of very many on here, from the sound of it.
