Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Good post, but I’m afraid winning today, beating Aberdeen, and Molde, and winning that section we are in will not stop the agenda, it’s full steam now, the lunatics are trying to take over the asylum, and God help us all.

The only thing wrong with your view is the length of time before you came to your conclusion

i had doubts when he picked the team to play Warsaw !!

However – my opinion is not educated enough to decide how good RD was or is so you must give hime time

He is judged on European performances – he has not proved to me he is the man

A decent man good moral fibre and a lovely human being – but so am I – but I know I could not manage our beloved club – its a big job

A good win today to steady the ship

  3. Yeah…no doubt it will be all showboating and Ronny roars against a dire DU side.

Talk about papering over the cracks ffs

    RD is clueless.

    Sooner he goes…the better.

That is a worry, I would take Brendan Rogers and his style of play

  5. Samaras has played 10 games since he left us, it would appear we made the right decision to not renew his contract at the wages he would’ve been willing to accept.

Do you know what wages samaras was willing to accept to stay at Celtic? I don’t but am happy to defer to your greater insight if you can evidence that it was more then the fees and wages wasted on scepovic who I don’t believe has started as much as 10 games for Celtic?

I always thought samaras was not offered any kind of new contact at Celtic, never got as far as talking about wages. That is what reports indicated at the time and I’m sure samaras was quoted as saying so too.

  7. Thanks for the feedback Tony, I dont pay too much attention to the guys that only post when we get beat, however the away support booing them in Norway on Thursday night – now that is a concern. He has to go on a winning run to calm everyone down.

Losing is part of the game of football. We will lose games in the future, including games we really should have won. I can live with that.

However, not turning up for games/chucking it/letting the heads go down? Nah.

We should have been physically, psychologically and tactically as well prepared as possible for games like Malmo and Molde. The fact that we were not needs to be addressed.

Individual players can have off days but there’s more to the problem with the current playing and management staff.

We could do worse than send out a clear message at least to our domestic rivals by turning in a good performance today and banging in a few goals.

His agent came out with the line that we didn’t offer him a contract, which to me read that they’d discussed money and there was no point offering one as we weren’t prepared to meet those demands.

Do you think Celtic wouldve kept Sammy for £1k a week, or course they wouldve.

Celtic didn’t think he was worth the money he was after, so no contract offered.

My post was to show that Samaras hasn’t done anything since leaving us, i know he’s had injuries (back) and a loss of form but surely you can see that we dodged a bullet there.

At the wee Spanish place and first time on since Friday. Not read back or anything but methought son today are:- Get a good win and three points today first , make changes that will make a difference ie formation, defend FIRST, blend ‘old’ with ‘young’ and don’t play sideways all the time and now and again try passing FIRST time to the guy you are going to pass it to anyway. It might work!! Anyway, don’t know what happened with Commons, but, if he was ‘ working’ for me he would have got ‘Private Lesson’ on you is in charge and feel free to dispute everything in Private in future , and,I wouldn’t play him today. BTW , just might get out to wifi source later so looking forward to up-dates.Thanks.

None of us can see into the future to know samaras would sustain back injuries post 2014. I don’t think he was particularly injury prone at Celtic and he was a first pick in Europe, proven Celtic goal scorer in Europe and great for getting us up the park at that level of football.

So I’d have thought a new contract offer would have been merited and then if it’s not to his liking he walks and no big deal. Isn’t commons new contract on reduced terms compared to his last one and brown too? So I’d have expected samaras at the very worst to be offered reduced terms too.

But it seems no contract was offered. What loss was there to Celtic in putting a contract in front of the guy even if they felt it unlikely that he would sign it?

The fact that samaras bided his time as a free agent that summer made me think that he was waiting in the hope that Celtic would offer him something. I’m sure Ronny was asked about it close to the August 2014 transfer deadline and didn’t rule it out.

It may be that given samaras picked up injuries after leaving Celtic then you can argue it’s a bullet dodged that he has gone, but who knows if he would have got those injuries if he stayed at Celtic.

And his leaving then forced us back into the transfer market where we have been stung for £4 million in transfer fees and god knows how much in wages for bullets marked scepovic and ciftci.

I’m saying that even though technically we didn’t offer him a contract we wouldve still talked wages.

It’s not like Sammy is Derk, if Derk’s agent comes out and says we didn’t offer a contract then I think we can accept that yep we didn’t want you to stay.

Sammy and Celtic would’ve talked about signing a new contract but been to far apart wage wise to even get to offering a contract.

It would’ve been the same with Ledley and Mathews, Celtic will have talked about them staying but knew the wage drop and what they were being offered elsewhere was to rich for Celtic. Doesn’t mean either party is at fault.

And yes hindsight is a great thing when it comes to all our failed signings :O)

  21. the glorious balance sheet on

    The huddle

Also to add, I don’t think we would be having this conversation on samaras if Celtic had prepared properly for his departure.

If, as you suggest, he wasn’t offered a contract on the basis that his wage demands were unrealistic, Celtic would have been aware of this long before June 2016 and should then have been long down the road of filling his jersey.

What we got instead was the signings of scepovic and Guidetti signed right on the deadline, over 3 months after samaras left the club. In guidetti’s case signed after the European deadline.

This lack of preparation re transfer dealings in my view is the crux of the problem.
