Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Interesting team selection. Lustig and Bitton on bench, jozo starts and no izzy at all.

    And commons starts too.

  2. Gerryfaethebrig on

    Lustig & Izzy dropped….. Good

    Kris C starts….. Even better

    Play your best players

  3. Surprised to see Ambrose ahead of Lustig, pleased with other 3 defenders. Surprised to see Joe ahead of Bitton, Pleased if a wee bit surprised to see Commons play, not surprised to see Armstong & GMS seeing who our opponents are. Allan & Cole are obviously not match fit as usual no place on bench for Stokes.

If Arab countries allowed today’s freedoms back in the 80s-and I hadn’t put my mouth in fast-forward wi my brain in rewind-I would probably be joining you for a pint!

Enjoy the match wherever you find it. I’ll be having links for Sunday lunch(!)

  5. Can’t believe people are so happy that KC is playing that waster Johansen is getting ignored.

For me, that decision by Deila is enough to sign is jotters

I think starting both KC and SJ is a statement of intent from Ronny.

    ‘I pick the team,no-one else.’

Both players should be nowhere near the ground today,TBH. KC for his indiscipline-regardless of whether, like me,you agree with his reasons-and SJ because of current form.

However, had he made either of those decisions, they would have driven the narrative.

IMO,he has told both of them that they owe him a performance. The ball is in their court to show their gratitude.

  7. Canalamar – I’m not particularly thrilled about Johansen but see the two things as separate – not playing Kris would feed the MSM Dunces for the rest of the season – he’ ll rbably score in aw!

I agree, but listening to Gordon Strachan and many other managers they play the players they trust (favourites) I like Stef J but he is not playing well just now so maybe Ronny is playing him to try and get him back, for all I slag Stef J, he doesn’t hide, which sometimes the stupid challenges he makes just adds to the frustration

Jinkyredstar also agree with your post about what is the best option, as long as we win today I will be a bit happier than Thursday……. Cue the papering over the crack posts

  9. ‘Mon the Mighty Hoops!

Sheep flagging, so make sure today’s match doesn’t give them any encouragement.

Brilliant, just arrived at Newton station for the train to have been cancelled.Missing the first 15 minutes at least.

  11. Pleased to see kris commons in team . Can’t understand johanson,s selection as he has been a passenger so far this term , but he seems to be the golden bhoy alright . Would also hope to see GMS pick his game up a bit too as he hasn’t shown the form which prompted us to buy him . Don’t know what to make of Forrest . Lustig, how could you have a settled team with these two constantly injured .

  12. Jinky….,

I see them dependent on each other, one as a sop and the other as a pointless show of defiance, Johansen should be the last man near a Celtic jersey today, izzy and Lustig dropped some are happy with that but both contribute more than Johansen.

In my expert opinion that’s deila’s 18 months up and that single decision does it for my, jotters.

Your lucky mate – I’m in Lanzorote and the wifi isn’t up to ‘a feed’ with no pubs close by so it’s radio CQN me.

So guys who will today’s play by play keyboard stars be and who will be the pundits with occasional words of wisdom?

Us disconnectedcsc are relying on you!

  14. UOG,

    Are you kidding ?

    Commons ?

Jeez if that’s our best player we’ve taken one mighty plummet in quality.

  15. Theglasgowcelticway

Nae luck, mate. Someone posted already mentioning transport being another negative about playing on a Sunday.

Last night during the Arsenal v Everton game, there was a tannoy announcement about the last train back to Liverpool being cancelled, meaning many of the travelling support having to leave before the end of the match to catch the one before that.

The cheering suggested the Gooners’ fans weren’t empathising too much with their misfortune.

    ………………

In answer to this question, then yes I was…

When I was five I was the centre spread picture of the DR in the arms of an ambulance man.

My Dad was driving the family in a hired car to the beach when we lived in Dennistoun.

On Paisley Road West, he lost control and the car skidded and ended up backwards through the window of Bells the Cleaners. No one seriously hurt but a snapper got a load of pictures of me being carted off. This was 1956 and the car was a 1955 Vauxhall Victor.

An old dear took us into her house and we got orangeade and chocolate bourbons. I didn’t want to leave.

I think you’d have to say it was PRW, Ibrox.

When I went back to school on the Tuesday, my teacher said “Well we don’t need to ask you why you weren’t here yesterday.” and waved the DR at me.

I knew shame at an early age.

    HH

  17. Canamalar

    FYI

Goals/assists per min in European competition:

    Mcgeady – 1 per 435

    Nakamura – 1 per 242

    Maloney – 1 per 223

    Moravcik – 1 per 145

    Commons – 1 per 139

If you can get past present crappy managerial circumstances, he is a very effective player and we are lucky to have him.

  18. UOG,

    What’s Stokesys assists ?

    What were Sammi’s assist rate

Throwing stats to support your argument is easy

Objectively he’s very average in a below average team.

  19. I hope to see Kristen join the century goal scorers club this season.

    He is on 86 now.

    A fine celtic player

  20. UOG,

And what’s the source of your stats

Are your stats weighted for the level of competition ?

Really, do you think assists in the Europa league compare to CL

  21. UpOverGoal

    I think those stats might be a bit misleading. The others did not play so many CL qualifying rounds as KC;

  22. JOZO Simunovic will make his home debut for Celtic today as the champions prepare to host Dundee United in the league at Paradise.

The Croatian defender is one of three changes made to the team that lost to Molde in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening as the Celts look to extend their lead at the top of the table over Aberdeen with victory over Mixu Paatelainen’s side this afternoon.

Twenty-one-year-old Simunovic made his first appearance in the 2-2 draw against Ajax in the Europa League last month and will now make his domestic bow in today’s Premiership clash.

Ronny Deila has also brought Kieran Tierney and Gary Mackay-Steven in to the starting XI in place of Emilio Izaguirre and Nir Bitton.

Kick-off is at 3pm and there will be live pre-match build-up and in-game updates via the official Celtic Twitter account @celticfc

    CELTIC TEAM NEWS

Starting XI: Gordon; Ambrose, Boyata, Simunovic, Tierney; Brown, Johansen; Mackay-Steven, Commons, Armstrong; Griffiths.

Celtic subs: Bailly, Blackett, Bitton, Ciftci, Rogic, Lustig, McGregor

  23. CTV running fine, it’s a coin toss over here how good the bandwidth is !!!!!!

    Mon the HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPS

  24. Canamalar

Stokes goals/assists per min in Europe is 1 per 250.

The underrated Samaras’ was the same as Commons, although he sometimes played as a striker as well as LM.

I can’t break them down into CL and EL, but think Commons has had 2 seasons in CL, 2 and a half in EL? Similar story with other players
