Don’t book travel to Edinburgh, lobby for league merger

807

If you are missing your competitive football fix you’ll have devoured the fixture list this morning but it’s still over seven weeks until the first league game of the season, when the league flag will fly before we face Ross County (we will have played a Champions League qualifier five weeks from today).

Thereafter, due to the postponement of a home game to allow for a financially lucrative friendly, Celtic are on the road six times in nine league fixtures, so if our away form is anything like it was for much of last season, it’s likely we will be in the mix, instead of clear leaders, come the end of October.

After an absence of some time, Celtic have a local derby to look forward to.  They meet Partick Thistle at Firhill on 26th October with the return game at Celtic Park set for New Year’s Day.  We are scheduled for two trips to the Capital within a month but don’t go booking your flights for the Hearts game in September, just in case…..

Curious news today that Celtic director and BT chief executive, Ian Livingston, will leave the telecoms company after five years at the top to become Minister for Trade and Investment in the coalition government.  Livingston will serve from the House of Lords.  How about boosting the ailing Scottish football industry by lobbying for a merger with a neighbouring league?

TBB- sadly you may have been the victim of Celtic transfer target statistic piracy.

Unless the data bears the imprimatur of Dontbrattbakkinapproximation teat it with a large pinch of tafelzout.

Growing up in Breda Virgil first became aware of the Glasgow giants when Fannie, the family’s pet cow, fell in a nearby canal and would have drowned but for the prompt intervention of Antony Stokes, who happened to be passing at the time in a skiff.

well said on gary hooper, also scored some crackers against the deidmob and will always be a hunskelper in my book, one of his main reasons for him coming up to us was to play in those games, lenny has often said that was an attraction in signing some players and i think he was one of those..it will have an effect on getting some players to move here ,those of a better quality i mean h.h

I personally thought that Gary Hooper improved greatly as a player last season. His work rate outside the box and unselfish running was a major part of that improvement.

    ————————

I think you’ll struggle to find many Celtic supporters who will agree with that analysis particularly amongst the away support.

We’ll find out hoopslegend Gary Hooper’s value to the ole Celts when and if he leaves.

I wouldn’t say I, or anybody I know, was obsessed with them. Most people I know believe they may well have pulled off the biggest scam in British Sporting history and couldn’t give a monkey’s flying duck about them. Now, most of the people I know love a good laugh, you might just say that some of them, myself included – are obsessed with fun and laughter and the huns are just a remarkable source of titters and chuckles right at this very moment.

You don’t have to do any work at all to take the lash out of them; they do it all for you; all you are obliged to do is crease up and roll about the floor in demented hysterics… it is you duty as a Celtic Supporter.

  6. I think we have bought well this transfer window already getting excited about the new season. Just shows the attraction our club can give players to showcase there talents in the Champions league as these players could have went elsewhere to play.my only concern is they can gel quickly so that we can get off to a flyer in the qualifiying rounds

I’d be happy if Celtic didn’t bring in any more players and instead spent any spare cash enticing those who may be looking at the EPL pound to knock it back and stay.

Champions League football boys, think about it, at Celtic you have a great chance of gracing the greatest stage… leave and as the big man told me – you’re effed as far as the big lights/nights go.

    Spot on.

People are quick to forget we we had the likes of Marc-Antoine Fortuné and Morten Rasmussen leading the line before Hooper came in.

As a bright chap like yourself will know, agreement with an argument does nothing to support the argument.

I believe Gary Hooper is a top class striker and totally dismiss accusations that he lost interest.

Our team is beginning to look very good for next season . I am guessing re van Dijk and Balde but for the moment I will imagine they are the real deal.I will also imagine we keep Victor and Gary. That being so, how does this team look?

    Forster;

    Lustig;van Dijk; Wilson; Izaguirre.

    Brown; Wanyama; Commons; Ledley.

    Balde and Hooper.

In reserve we have: Ambrose,Rogic,Matthews;Forrest,Samaras,Mulgrew,Watt,McGeouch,Twardzik and anyone else I have forgotten.

The future`s bright; the future`s Green and White.

Sorry for the delay. No I haven’t read it and I’m not suggesting for one minute that it’s whataboutery – what I’m saying is that if a complaint is received the Police would probably look very closely at the complaint and where it came from because as soon as they take any action they know they’d be engulfed from all sides with complaints and like it or not even on this, the least offensive of all partisan blogs I’ve been on, they’re have been comments that I’m sure some might take offense at.

The point I was trying to make is people sometimes fail to appreciate a player who is doing the business and are too quick to forget striker who arrived on a bigger fee (in the case of MAF) and were totally useless.

    Good Day folks,

This finds me at home feeling bloody awful having caught some horrible virus from one, if not two, of my now disowned children who have been written out of the imaginary will in a jiffy for passing on their germs.

    Re Hooper et al.

The keeping of good players after a period is always going to be difficult for us when there is far bigger money available elsewhere.

I know loads of us like to think that it is not about the money but alas it is. The very interesting “secret footballer” columns and book via the Grauniad make that plain— where the secret footballer talks relentlessly about the money and how the winning of medals etc is actually secondary.

    Sad …. but apparently true.

There are of course always exceptions to the rule…….. and there are those who think long after playing football has ceased to be a career option.

Scott Brown could have moved on for more money…. so could Samaras……. they choose not to.

Other former players maintain a lifestyle and lifetime interest in Celtic long after their playing days and know that an attachment to Celtic can bring benefits long after the boots have been hung up.

    However, think on this.

It looks as if Celtic may well conclude their second signing today. Another young international player who a previous poster described as being in the mould of Vincent Kompany– who I remember coming to Celtic park years ago with Anderlecht and being very impressive.

Besides doing the business, there are three things I take from these signings.

First— Celtic are making it plain to all buying clubs that they do not need their money to go and acquire target players. Accordingly we do not “need” to sell to progress and strengthen. Therefore if you want to buy a Hooper or Wanyama then you have to fork out the bucks.

Second– whether Balde and Van Djyk walk straight into the first team or not — all the players in the squad– and all the young guys bubbling just under—- are going to have to show that they can cope with these new guys in training to be worthy of consideration.

In short– our own natural grown talent get to play with good quality European players who may be above their level or the level they are used to meeting in opposition in Scotland. Playing with better players you become better —- see the coaching manual of one J Stein on that.

Thirdly— The Hoopers, Wanyamas, Fosters and so on can see the club evolving with good quality players coming in—- and of course attracting interest in Celtic from Holland and Portugal in the current cases.

This puts Celtic– and their players—- in the limelight.

Wanyama was released by a Belgian club who must be Kicking themselves.

Hooper was chased down by Lennon personally at Scunthorpe and is a better player for his time at Celtic Park.

Would he prefer being Jay Bothroyd — who has just been released by Queens Park Rangers and is looking for a club?

Or perhaps footballers can see that Lennon is building a squad of really good young players who can take this club forward in Europe.

If you have any sense you will see the Scottish league as the entry ticket or entry path to the big glamour games.

That is with no disrespect to the St Johnstone’s, Ross County’s. ICT’s etc— all of whom are far better run football clubs than many in the EPL—- and all of whom will challenge for a European slot this year— unlike Southampton and others who have been mentioned.

WE are doing things to a plan– a good plan—- and soon enough even the players and agents will notice.
