Dougie Dougie and SFA cover-up

897

As a consequence of items relating to lies told by former referee Dougie McDonald’s no longer being found by searches through Google’s UK portal, while reaming available on the US portal, a suspicion arose that McDonald has used recent EU ruling to have these items expunged from the search engine.

During a Dundee United-Celtic game in 2010 McDonald awarded Celtic a penalty, then quickly changed his mind.  He lied to Neil Lennon after the game, and to the SFA supervisor about the circumstances which caused him to change his mind.  Celtic Quick News published an excerpt from the supervisor’s report, which was based on information McDonald subsequently admitted was false.

Having admitted to a lie, and under pressure from Celtic, McDonald resigned later in the year, but the greater stench was that of cover-up.  Having set the chain of events in motion, McDonald realised his error and admitted what he did to the SFA on the day of the game.

Having lied, he quickly came clean, but the actions of the SFA were far more serious.  With knowledge of the lie, the SFA were now in ownership of it.  They should have told McDonald to apologise to Neil Lennon and the referee supervisor.  Instead, they publicly reaffirmed the lie.

Even after the cover-up came to light, the SFA continued to close ranks on Celtic, faces were set to stone.  If Celtic didn’t know their place when it came to the dark arts of the SFA, they became acutely aware of it then.  Nothing could ever be the same again.

I have sympathy for McDonald.  He made a mistake but quickly did the right thing.  His name is tarnished largely as a consequence of the actions of his superiors.  If he called Neil Lennon the next day to extend the apology he gave to the SFA, the matter may have ended there and then.  He was not an innocent victim of an SFA cover-up, but he was a kind of victim.

The fight to change the SFA goes on.  Peter Lawwell is now on the board and some of the faces have moved on, but it is not a healthy body.  The vast majority of the 93 member clubs are not conspiratorial in nature and have no ill towards Celtic or any other club, but overhauling the labyrinth of committees, with vested interests which have been decades in the making, will look like pushing water uphill to anyone committed to reform.

Our interests are best served leaving the SFA behind, and we’re not alone in that.

Excitement builds as the 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place tomorrow in Aberdour, with Frank McGarvey and Len Murray!

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation. We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle. Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle. The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want. Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

In the 70s and half of the 80s, my Dad worked 6 days a week so missed all Saturday games, but he made sure in the 80s that I was on a supporters bus well looked after and following the hoops( home and away).

His sacrifice, our gain as I became indoctrinated in the Hoops.

A fine man always putting others before him. I have a long way to get close to him

He was telling me tonight about Stevie Chalmers (He got the book for this birthday) debut in March 1959 game which was his first game at CP. It was an afternoon kick off ( We did not have floodlights) and we lost 2-1. Amazing stuff!

My dad took me to my first game in 1968 v Morton, we won 4-1 :) I was 3. He took me to see Celtic play every team we played bar 1. His last game v them was the disaster in ’71. My first game v them that he allowed me to go to was the ’80 riot. “Telt ye whit they’re like.” Were his first words to me after I fought my way home wi ma mates that day.

  6. Margaret McGill – well said – we are entering into a new era of downsizing. I think the unseemly cheerleading for a board which shares little interest with celtic fans.

The experimentation that is going on with celtic managers/players etc based on a failed methodology (moneyball) means we are not more than a football club – we are less than a football club. We are indeed a club like no other. But not in a good way.

Most celtic supporters I know are looking at the new season with indifference. I have never heard celtic supporters who dont have anything to say about the club.

These are dangerous times and yet few acknowledge this…..

  7. I didn’t want Craig Gordon…..but now that he is on the books, will get my full support.

Charlie Gallagher was a terrific crosser and passer of the ball, possibly lacked a little pace. A very very fine player, but unlucky that the competition for spots was fierce. Same with John Hughes. Biggest problem for these two guys was that no subs were allowed back then. Big Jock played them when it suited his game plans, they would always have been at least subs though as they were very much part of the first team pool

Great start for the Celts today

  12. My first celtic game was the 1980 Hampden riot game. What a baptism, though I was already a cliftonville supporter in Belfast and well used to such fisticuffs, though on a smaller scale. Stayed in Easterhouse under the hospitality of Willy Nolan. A true celtic and gentleman.

Have lurked here for years and whilst I am a life long celt,I am not fully on board with the way our club is run.

Maybe a wee glimmer of hope that the Green Brigade might return.

    Anyone any info?

  18. I see a few mentions of the first Celtic games attended.

I also see some mention of ‘not being allowed to go’ until then.

My Mum (my Dad was in the undecided column) refused to allow me to go to a game.

I went to my first Celtic game with my uncle who was a priest.

This made it ok, even if it was against a team in blue at Celtic Park.

A few years later before they were both taken from me, I went with them to Hampden to see Scotland beat Czechoslovakia to qualify for the 74 World Cup. Joe Jordan scored the winner and I went bonkers along with the crowd. I shared some guys bubbly out the bottle and looked round at my parents. They were both still standing in the same spot, motionless. My Dad had a faraway look in his eyes and my Mum was looking open mouthed in astonishment at her wee bhoy leaping about like a loon.

I found the link to the game. Arthur Montford’s commentary is a timeless piece of Scottish football around this time. When Joe Jordan scores, our Arthur insists in calling him Jardine – three times.

In respect of your sentence above, can you explain to me how the resolution to reduce the requisite time, in situ, for an interested party to be eligible to hold SFA committee office failed at this summer’s SFA AGM?

Next year’s President will be Alan McRae, current 1st Vice-President who knows Cove Rangers like the back of his hand (but knows nothing else).
