EBTs went to staff at other clubs. £10m unaccounted for

346

Assuming Sir David Murray was telling the truth to Sky News in March (bear with me), there is a £10m gap between the sum recorded in Rangers accounts as paid to EBTs and the recipients revealed by the BBC last night.

It may be that the BBC didn’t receive information on some Rangers employees but we should also consider what other non-employees received payment from an Employee Benefit Trust, like Graeme Souness, who was employed by another club at the time.

What other clubs’ employees received a piece of that £10m?  Was it only Blackburn Rovers?  Did they know about it?  Did an employee of another SPL club receive payment from Rangers Employee Benefit Trust?

What about journalists?  The cosy relationship between football clubs and sports journalists has been one of the most incongruous features of this debacle.

What about officials?  Yes, officials?

We know cash went out of the company, we know how much is unaccounted for, we just don’t know where it went.  The already-established multi-association nature of these revelations (it involved a club registered by the Football Association in England) puts the matter beyond the immediate scope of the Scottish authorities, which is some comfort.

Many of the facts have been revealed but this will be a story that is still giving a decade from now.  Before Rangers disappear into the ether, the authorities (football and other) must use all leverage possible to discover where that £10m went.

I didn’t see a penny.  Did you?

I am still trying to digest the enormity of what was revealed last night. This could take a while.

  1. scotlands shame on

if folk at sfa are claiming that they havent seen the most controversial programe ever about scottish football that means taking trophies away and possible taking registration of a team away then frankly new people needed.

Surely someone from sfa stayed at home rather than heading to junket in usa or switzerland- even just the admin boy? And did their 5* hotels not have facility to get bb1 scotland through sky? doubtful.

Could someone not have taped programme and sent it to him?

could they not have asked bbc for copy to view when away?

could they not, as many people who live outwith the uk have done today and gone onto youtube to watch the programme? (if not awnaw could send them the link!!!)

staggering of claim they havent watched it.

  5. Stupid huns…

Rangers fans have no faith in administrators Duff & Phelps, according to a supporters’ spokesman.

The London firm has been running Rangers since the club entered administration on 14 February.

A BBC Scotland documentary has revealed a potential conflict of interest with Duff & Phelps partner David Grier, a claim the company denies.

John Macmillan, of Rangers Supporters’ Association, said: “Virtually every fan is unhappy with their performance.”

Asked if supporters of the Ibrox club had faith in the company, Macmillan added: “No, absolutely not.

“I think Duff & Phelps’ handling of this administration has been a shambles from day one.

“I don’t know how many times they have announced a preferred bidder and withdrawn it at the last moment.

“There has to be a serious investigation into their handling of this.

“But we hope that Rangers will exit administration under new ownership and that this investigation can take place at a later date.

“The priority is to get out of administration via a CVA and hopefully this Duff & Phelps thing won’t hold that up.”

The Court of Session approved Rangers owner Craig Whyte’s choice of Duff & Phelps as the club’s administrators, but Macmillan, secretary of the fans’ group, believes the company’s involvement “just doesn’t sit right”.

“They were appointed by Craig Whyte himself and that tells its own story,” he said.

  6. Strange thing….there was an article a few minutes ago on RTC,apparently written by RTC….Last Action Hero…applauding Herr Schmidt for not havin’ an ebt and needing to stand up for Thug F.C……it wasn’t there very long before it was removed.

    Any thoughts?

So David Murray borrowed the money for all those titles from the Bank of Scotland and failed to pay it back.Does this mean that the Celtic fans who banked with them helped pay for those titles?Just another example of what must be one of the biggest frauds in this country’s history. One more question. What is meant by “establishment club?”

  9. Fortunes Favour Mibbes on

Please give Stuart Regan a beak

Article 18, Section 72 of SFA Regulations:

Members must disregard defamatory words, written or verbal; all accusations regardless of existing evidence which should pertain to the glorious glasgow huns. Section 2, added May 24th 2012: EBTs are pure awright by the way as long as nae other clubs do them, int it. Signed Dawyl.

  10. If the huns somehow survive this- & its hard to see how they can- would anyone be willing to accept the mangy beast at the top table severely neutered?

Say: 3 year Euro ban. 10 point penalty for 3-5 years. Minimum 1 year transfer embargo. 75% Tv cash to other clubs. Stripped of all titles/cups during EBT years. Fat Sally kept on as manager (thats maybe a bit sadistic)…but that would be a minimum I could maybe reconcile myself with IF & its a big IF they regain SPL status…I know any re-entry skirts the very fringes of blasphemy for some…maybe even including myself.

  11. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

Rangers fans will, with considerable justification, feel under attack and believe that the existence of something very dear to them is threatened. It is a basic fact of sociology that groups in crisis will blame others- those from without- for what ails them rather than looking inward. To break the vicious cycle that spirals downward towards disaster, someone of real character needs to step forward to acknowledge the real problems and help the group come to some acceptance of what has happened. Rangers need a real leader just now. When the time comes to pick up the rubble strewn around Rangers FC, the club’s supporters need look no further than Walter Smith as a man who has been tested by events and proven to have the right stuff.

Unlike those to whom EBTs were not offered or not available, it appears that Smith was presented during his time as Everton manager with an opportunity that looks similar to that taken by Graeme Souness while manager at Blackburn Rovers. In September 2002, Smith applied to the Murray Group Management Remuneration Trust trustees for a loan for £80,000. Despite the loan request being approved in the same month, the payment does not appear to have ever been completed. Quite what he had done to merit this payment- four years after leaving the Rangers’ employment- is difficult to tell from the paper trail. However, it looks like Walter Smith thought better of receiving money from his old club through the EBT scheme.

Temptation itself is no sin. It looks like Smith had the character to walk away from what will have appeared at the time to be easy money. That is to be admired. If I have this interpretation wrong, I will be pleased to publish an alternative explanation of events with equal prominence.

In whatever form a new Rangers emerges (and some form of Rangers will be reborn), it will need men like Smith if it is to put the last decade behind it. Some will quibble that Smith was content to benefit from winning championships with teams liberally supplied with players who were subsidised by the EBT scheme. As a non-director and a football man, he can be absolved of responsibility for understanding the tax compliance issues surrounding the scheme. Finding the money to pay players was not his job.

In a tale involving many villains, it was refreshing to stumble over an uplifting chapter.

For those who have asked, Ally McCoist was not a beneficiary of this scheme. Three players, Hamed Namouchi, Ross McCormack, and Francis Jeffers had trusts opened in their name in anticipation of payments being made, but for a variety of reasons no money was ever paid to them through these accounts.

    Can you see them

    See right through them

    They have no shield

    No secrets to reveal

In the jealous games people play

    Our lips are sealed

    Careless talk

    Through paper walls

    We can’t stop them

    Only laugh at them

    Spreading rumors

    So far from true

    Dragged up from the underworld

    Just like some precious pearl

It doesn’t matter what they say

In the jealous games people play

    Our lips are sealed

Pay no mind to what they say

    It doesn’t matter anyway

    Our lips are sealed

    There’s a weapon

    We must use

    In our defense

    Silence

    When you look at them

    Look right through them

    That’s when they’ll disappear

    That’s when you’ll be feared

    Hush, my darling

    Don’t you cry

    Quiet, angel
