Edouard and Kyogo productive partnership

231

Celtic’s first half display against Hearts yesterday saw the length of the M8 between the teams.  The visitors put bodies in the way but were unable to stem the tide towards Craig Gordon’s goal.  A sublime pass by Kyogo Furuhashi gave James Forrest space to turn inside and dink a cross that was expertly converted by Odsonne Edouard.

Edouard turned provider when Stephen Welsh towered over the defence to head home as the roof threatened to fall in on the visitors.  Hearts stabilised after the break but were not in the contest in any meaningful way until Carl Starfelt mis-controlled the ball inside his penalty area, allowing Liam Boyce to get in the way of his second attempt, resulting in a penalty that was converted by the Hearts stirker.

That sparked Celtic back into life and they soon restored their two-goal cushion through Kyogo.  Hearts added time second goal flattered them and came too late to cause any concern.

One of my concerns this month is that we do not shift Odsonne and he leaves on a free at the end of the season.  On this showing, a season of him and Kyogo would not be totally without compensation.  The partnership looked very promising.

I also heard a comment from “Rory” o Premier yesterday after Kyogo had been decked for the 3rd time.

Something like “Welcome to Scottish football”

A bit of the Natural “Welcome to the big time Mr Hobbs.”

I also watched on the replay as Smith went out of his way to stand on Kyogo’s foot & listened as Michael Stewart made excuses for it.

You are a bundle of laughs.

Let us see how things develop.

OE will be worth a lot of money at some point this season.

A Bosman is of no use if you are playing in the ECh next season.

  3. Amongst all the “just get it done, Celtic” and “bring the budget forward, Celtic”, there must also be an element of the potentially incoming player having to agree to come – no? And if that player wants to hang around until late in the window to see what his options are, it’s unfair to hang that on Ange, Dom or anyone else charged with new signings. And there’s nothing we can do about it.

I think we’ve done a good job so far (Kyoto, Hart, Abada), everybody seemed to want McCarthy, and the jury is out on Starfelt to date.

  4. IMWANDAN on 16TH AUGUST 2021 2:02 PM

For James Forrest to be actively influential for 5 minutes, given his forward position and demands of essentially being the penultimate link in the chain from back through midfield and then to bring in the other attackers, is testament to his ability, stamina, skill and attitude

    Interesting stats & general info.

I am a big Jamsie fan as are the others, young & old, with whom I share space at Celtic Park.

He is a top player and a model professional – I very much look forward to him joining the ‘100’ club and increasing his haul of honours to twenty this season….oh for more like him.

  5. I prefer Kyogo playing through the middle, not wide left to accommodate a wantaway.

Last Thursday you suggested that Ange should play Edouard v Jablonec and the vast majority of CQNers where aghast as for some reason they assumed you meant instead of Kyogo. Well I for one knew you meant ALONGSIDE the Japanese wizard.

You have been vindicated after Edouard’s performance v Hearts. His goal and his work rate were a joy and both strikers complemented each other perfectly. In fact Edouard looked sharper and more mobile throughout the 90 minutes. He even looked more pleased than usual with his goal.

I wouldn’t mind if he stays for the season and produces performances like that, even if it means he leaves for nothing.

  7. FIELDOFDRAMS on 16TH AUGUST 2021 2:43 PM

    Agree with your piece.

    —–

Everyone knows, or, should know, that there are certain parameters that govern whether we sign a player, or, not. I don’t know what they are, but cost will be the biggest consideration. That, and all the other variables you list, means nothing is usually straightforward.

Big mistakes (c£15m+) have been made recently in our dealings with the likes of Barkas, Duffy, Ajeti, Kenny, Laxalt & Klimala – let’s hope there is no more.

Eddy looked a lot brighter yesterday – maybe there has been good news in his quest to find a new club. Staying and running down his contract is the worst possible outcome for us – we don’t know what we will get from him on the field, but we are certain to get nothing for him off it.

    Interesting debate re: James Forrest.

I content myself that my criticism of him is a back handed compliment (!)

    He’s very good.

I think he has it in him to be exceptional.

IMHO he is in there for (in order) … Goals, assists, create pressure, relieve pressure.

He does the top two very well.

Personally I think he could improve on the bottom two.

Couple of times yesterday in good positions he carelessly made short simple passes …. straight to a Jambo.

That might be the cause of some angst on here?

  10. 12. Shane Duffy makes Celtic ‘rock bottom’ confession as he pours his heart out on dream turned nightmare

The Republic of Ireland international had a miserable time in Scotland and admitted he thought his English Premier League ambitions were over.

Celtic loan flop Shane Duffy admits he hit ‘rock bottom’ after his dream loan move turned into a nightmare.

The boyhood Hoops fan joined up with the club last summer but didn’t even finish the season with the club after returning to Brighton following Neil Lennon’s exit.

    ADVERTISING

His last appearance for Celtic came in a 2-1 win over St Johnstone in February but he lost his place in the team to Stephen Welsh and never got another look in.

Duffy was also dealing with the death of his father and the criticism he received got too much and he admits it was a ‘relief’ to return to the south coast of England.

He was back in the Brighton team for their English Premier League opener against Burnley which ended in a 2-1 win and he admits he thought his chance at that level had gone.

But he’s grateful to Graham Potter and everyone at Brighton for sticking by him despite his time at Celtic Park being a disappointment.

He told Sussex Live: “When you hit rock bottom that is the reality a lot was going wrong off the field, which was difficult for me and I had to mentally go through that and that was tough. So, until you get to that moment you get there and realise you have got to change something.

“That is what I have done and I am still taking it day by day and be like an 18-year-old try and impress every day, try and improve and try and help as much as I can. I feel like if you do that you get the reward sometimes when maybe you don’t expect it.

“You always think that and after the year I had I was in a really low place and thought Premier League is probably over for me. But I have got good people around me and it is the club, the club [Brighton] are so good for me and it feels like home for me.

“When I came back after my loan I had a big relief off my shoulders and I had felt like I had come home again and the comfort started to come back.

“The lads have been brilliant around me, so there is a little bit in your head that you might not be able to but the character I am I have been proving people wrong all my career and that is what I have got to again, hit the restart button.

“That is what I have done really. Started from scratch again and try to prove people wrong again it is only one game and a lot can still happen, but as long as I am here I’ll try and help the team whether that’s on the pitch or off the pitch with the younger lads that is what I am here to do.”

  13. Re the Edouard situation and the rumoured wage demands that are north of eighty five thousand a a week. I take the figure with a pinch of salt of course but if that’s the sort of money the boy and his agent thinks he’s worth then I hope we’ve at least had the discussion with him that the best way to get that money is to sign a years extension and be part of something really special this season. Seriously, as a goal scorer is there a better team to be part of just now?

CELTIC are closing in on the signing of Shamrock Rovers centre-back Liam Scales – but the Premiership runners-up will not get the deal concluded before Thursday.

The Irish champions face Flora Talinn of Estonia on Thursday night in the play-off for the Europa Conference League, and manager Stephen Bradley is keen to keep a hold of his prized asset for the do-or-die qualifier.

However, Bradley has conceded that it is only a matter of time before Scales moves on – with the Hoops believed to be front and centre in the race for the 23-year-old defender’s signature.

“I’m not sure where Liam’s end is at but our stuff is tied up,” he revealed.

    Glasgow Times:

“I’d imagine with the window closing at the end of the month, it’s getting there.

“If not after Tallinn, it will definitely be soon. We did things at our end. Liam has a decision to make and I’m pretty sure where his mind is.

“Liam will definitely travel and be with us on Thursday. We’re nearly getting there but he’ll definitely be there Thursday.

“He’ll definitely be involved in the first leg and hopefully second.

“It’s been really good. We spoke at length when the interest and bids came in.

“We’ve all spoken openly from the start. There’s his thinking and our thinking; both clubs have dealt with it really well.

“He’s been brilliant, been dealing with this background for a while and you wouldn’t think it looking at him. He’s played every minute.”

Limits on outdoor gatherings due to coronavirus have been lifted allowing the marches to take place.

Glasgow is set to see over 30 Orange Walks on just one day next month after coronavirus restrictions were relaxed.

Thousands are expected to participate in the marches on September 18 as 34 parades have been planned.

Limits to outdoor gatherings were lifted on August 9 allowing the marches to restart.

Our sister title Glasgow Live report how extensive road closures are expected as lodges take a number of routes across the city throughout the day.

The largest march will see three lodges converge at once.

The County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow South Group, which will begin at Pacific Quay, expects 1,850 members alone.

Meanwhile, the North Group, beginning at Garscube Road, expects 1,010 and the West Group, assembling at Kelvingrove Park, expects 650.

These three will join together at West George Street and process to Glasgow Green.

“Organisers are aware they will be expected to comply with any restrictions that are in place at the time of their event taking place.”

Hope SD makes it back into the big time down south.

As he alludes to in the interview — there seemed to be a lot going on in the background.

He looked lost at times and the growing shambles at CP did not help him at all.

He turns up this season with AP in charge and it all would have been so much different.

Having JH behind him shouting the odds and AR beside him bursting a gut would have been so much better that JJK giving away corners making pass backs from the half way line and SBa in silent mode.

    Sliding doors …

Main thing is that he is back playing at a good level and showing everybody what talent and strengths he has.

“You make my point for me.

Our highlights are when JF can be bothered.

What about the other 85 minutes when he was the waste of a jersey.”

    ————————————–

I think you have your logic back to front here.

James “Not-Nostradamus” Forrest does not know where the highlights are going to be. He cannot decide “This attack is going nowhere” so I’ll hide. He can never be sure that any attack is going to result in a goal so he decides to be bothered. He set up Adam Montgomery with a great goal chance- yesterday- It did not make the highlights reel that I saw. But he set up Eddie with another chance (in addition to his goal) that should have been scored and that was included.

JF continually gets barracked for his weaknesses with precious little appreciation of his strengths. He is a poor tackler but quite good at interceptions. He does regularly track back but is not always effective in preventing attackers making progress. He rarely scores headed goals. He used to spend too much time on his erse looking for refs to award free kicks but this has largely gone from his game these past 4 years. He has never shone at Ibrox (very, very few Celtic wingers have, in those blood and snotters games. He used to get criticised for failing to take his man on the outside and “always” cutting in yet the one improvement BR genuinely brought to his game was the introduction of a “stand-up” cross from the by-line as he used to overhit crosses delivered at speed.

What JF does supremely well is to keep control of a ball when moving at speed. He makes good slip passes within crowded penalty boxes. He scores regularly for a winger. He CAN play either wing though he is much more productive on the right. He had 4 seasons in a row of making circa 30 apearances in the season so he has been healthy recently. He has seen off all pretenders including the much vaunted Paddy Roberts. He may well see off Leil Abada and Karamoko too as both have yet to prove themselves to our new coach as better options.

If either of them outperforms him, they will have replaced a player with a decade’s worth of achievements and we will be better for the standards he set.

  24. Scales looks like a project which is probably why we’re willing to wait on him.

Eddie was very good yesterday – he started the move which lead to his goal and worked very hard all day.

I’ll be more than happy to see him stay – we know we’ve a quality player there – if he leaves for free, the balance sheet can take a hit so that our trophy cabinet gets filled.

  25. AN DÚN on 16TH AUGUST 2021 3:59 PM

I’d accept that if us signing more players isn’t dependant on his sale. I wouldn’t be too happy to go with what we have for the season – even with Eddie.

  26. as in life, many external factors can and will impact your emotional well being and affect your performance in the workplace.

as time went on I did feel sorry for Shane, the jersey was too big for him, and the loss of his father definately impacted him for sometime.

  27. something is intriguing me with our Japanese bhoy.

Desribed by various sources as the best player in Japan, and yet he only has 6 caps with 3 goals.

How good are the players that keep him out then ?

and can we get some more of them please.

  28. over…and…over

The main reason the liquidation Rangers Football Club as was, has taken so long is down to the various court and legal actions surrounding it. The main one of course being that taken by the HMRC re EBTs since resolved at the Supreme Court, but also various action taken by BDO themselves against other Parties on behalf of the face painter.

Despite his various conspiracy theories elsewhere, John James has been on the money, not just on the Civil cases re liquidation, but on the criminal cases related to it involving Police Scotland, and the Crown Office in Scotland, also referred to on here yesterday. Both institutions should find themselves in the dock, but they won’t, via the use of public money.

  29. GEEBEE1978

I think we’ll get Juranovic over the line soon and Scales later next week.

Christie will need replaced on the left side at some point, that might wait till January.

I wonder whether P67 assumed we’d have £20 million to spend from Eddie’s departure when he predicted a spend in this window unlike anything we’ve seen ?

We’re being prudent as ever at the moment but the form of Ralston, Welsh, Rogic and Christie is very promising.

Turkeybhoy…Charlie Gallagher is now considered a Celtic legend and yet he had many, many detractors during his playing days. He was accused of being powder-puff and inconsistent…very similar to James Forrest.

*back in that horrible period when we had been gubbed 0-4 at hades in Paddy Crerand’s last game and then subsequently sold him we as young schoolbhoys were gutted.

We had a teacher who never missed a game home and away and travelled up to them in the local CSC bus. I actually met him in a pub in Embra after a game at swinecastle 5 year later after a Stevie goal had gave us another win.

Anyway, one of my school mates asked him who was the worst player at Parkheid, right away he replied Charlie Gallagher, there seemed tae have been lots of nods of agreement that day.

Wonder how he felt 2 year later on that sunny day at hunden or another 2 year after that on a dreich night at Parkheid.

I’m not going to accuse him of being fickle but some players are just misunderstood or misused.

BTW I had recently had the opportunity of watching highlights of the “Billy’s Bumper” final, although at the game a lot of celebration was carried out that night with SA’s finest export being quaffed so had never saw the game that night on the tele.

Although its often commented on Charlie’s contribution through his exocet missile which bounced up off the crossbar for wee ten thirty tae nod home as well as his exquisite corner, after watching these highlights, Peas and Barley was IMHO the MOTM.

Incidentally this was back in the 2-3-5 days and Charlie played at inside right, the buzz bomb at inside left and ten thirty on the left wing with a roving role, his 2nd goal came fae the inside right position scored with his right foot.

Before the summer was out Jock who had moved chopper back tae right half, a position oul Jimmy had tried him in previously, changed our formation to 4-4-2 with Bertie being Bobby’s perfect foil.

Finally it should be noted that the Pars were favourites that day and finished 3rd in the League 1 point behind the winners and runners up with a far superior goal average we were 8th 12 points behind them with a pish poor GA, this makes our victory all the more amazing.

I fear you doth protest — and know — to much regarding JF and his career trials and tribulations.

He is a terrific talent if he was 21 but now he is a senior player who acts like a youth wannabee.

His confidence looks shot and his workrate is currently poor.

He takes no responsibilities on the park and yesterday when he got the ball he could not wait to ship it on. No urgency / no vision / little desire — all round very sloppy — he has more talent than AMcG but will achieve only a fraction of what that player has achieved because he refuses to grow up.

He perked up when he had the support of BR and the challenge of PR in front of him but now after his injury last season he is looking more and more like a caricature of his younger self. This season LA and KF have shown up his lack of effort and belief in spades.

Hopefully AP and the new players around him with their hunger and focus will spark a response.

There is more to come if JF wanted to improve his game — however at the moment things are not looking good.
