Evidence is clear: Celtic are back

272

The evidence is clear: we’ve got our Celtic back.  The football on Saturday was better than at any point this season.  Four goals scored told only part of the story.  Odsonne Edouard alone hit the post three times, while Callum McGregor struck the crossbar and Scott Sinclair hit the post with the keeper out of his goal.

Faculties that were so elusive a few weeks ago, like passing and movement, were a joy.  Tom Rogic deserved his Man of the Match award, while Odsonne is back looking ominously difficult to play.  The loss of Scott Brown to injury was a worry, while his replacement, Scott Sinclair continues to struggle to recapture past form.  If you were within a mile of Celtic Park, you may also have heard me when Mikael Lustig was out-muscled for Hibs second goal.

Hibs looked a shadow of the team we expected in the first half.  Anyone who comes to Celtic Park with more lofty intentions than simply defending their 18-yard box had better be on form.  They objectively improved in the second half, but that would have been different if the woodwork did not come to their rescue so often.

I’m not going to tell you I’m confident about Leipzig, but I am looking forward to Murrayfield on Sunday.  We look ready to defend our treble.

Scott Browns yellow card and Darren MacGregors yellow card should not be the same punishment

Tom Rogics vision is visionary :-)

    Some lovely passes

And another thing Scott Sinclair should have scored but falling back and the ball moving away from the goal, wee Jamesys follow up was a shocker

It’s great to be critical after a 4-2 win :-)

SS had time to pick his spot. Unfortunately the spot he picked was about 4 inches wide and made of white painted metal . ( Or ‘woodwork’ as it’s quaintly known).

I had heard it was a sitter he is falling back and probably thinks all he has to do is connect and it’s in, I think wee Forrest’s follow up was far worse

Some of our play was a joy and in fairness both Hibs goals were excelllent finishes as well

Going by what I have read on here and the highlights that was a cracker of a game

So I watched that lovely song The gloaming. I then just watched some songs that were prompted by utube. Pipe bands in Perth and Inverness. That was half an hour I was on!

I’ll away and see what Sipsini has put up.

Again I have only saw the highlights but you are spot on some of the passing and movement was a joy, somebody is going to take a right doing from our young team …

Although on Thursday I would bite your hand off for a point in a boring 0-0 draw :-)

  7. See Phil has Rugger Guy looking at the accounts. Am I right in interpreting that PL gets a huge bonus the next time we qualify for CL???

I agree although I don’t think we’re too far away from competing with the likes of Leipzig…maybe just 2 players to make us more solid in defence. In attack we look first class.

Surely any CEO of a business that is successful (getting into the CL is obviously successful for our club) so I think in business “bonuses” are usually used as an incentive to CEOs and others in that business

  10. GFTB,

Like you I only saw the highlights but it was a joy to watch. Rogic, Wee Jamsie, French Eddie, Nchamp (sp).

I’m a bit more confident than you. I think we will get a win on Thursday. As long as they have self belief.

I was gutted as much as the next Celtic fan after Athens… I always think we need the CL group stages to attract players and I also think us not being in the CL group stages was a big factor in Moussa getting itchy feet… big Dedryeck playing “could” maybe have got us there, but who knows so may as well go with what we have, I share your optimism about Leipzig would be over the moon if we get European fitba after Christmas, if we make the knock out stages … who knows we might be heading to Azerbaijan (?) in May 2019… Planes, trains & automobiles the stories would easily rival Seville :-)

  12. Sipsini,

Can’t remember that song. I see it’s very popular. Nearly 23m hits. It’s just marginally on the wrong side of heavy rock for me. I’m a big softy when it comes to rock.

Made me laugh, nobody is usually more confident than this happy clapper :-)

I hope you are correct but I would be delighted with a point, 3 would be magic

  15. If PL is getting 2.5m on a turnover of 100m, he is vastly overpaid. 2.5% is scandalous. Before I retired I worked in a government establishment which spent 20m pa, the head of the establishment was on about 80k pa.

That’s a difficult one, as I am conflicted in my opinion of him. In my previous place of work. MY CEO was paid significant less monies and the business was £900m T/O with a healthy profit, but we are in the free loading and overpaid world of football, so maybe we are paying the going rate? All I know is we doubled Peter’s salary and his total earning potential from £1m to £2m per year, when Brendan came on board.

Dangerously inaccurate, really?, that sounds worser than inaccurate.

Anyway ,for debating sakes regarding inaccuracy, given that Sevco don’t do many things, including publish annual accounts, then what you and I read or hear, in SMSM with regard to ‘ their alleged spend ’ is subject to hyper hunflation, somewhere off the radar.

see Scottish Transfer window Style Guide posted earlier

We’ve bought too many players to date, a huge part of the reason (see BR comments) that we didn’t buy well, in summer, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the purchase of Odsonne Edouard alone was the biggest spend in Scotland outwith gross Sevconomics and Level 5 propaganda.

We are the only wealthy buying club in Scotland and will be ad infinitum, we’ve way too much of a head start on any other Scottish club including Sevco 2012.

We’re minted in the black and jam tomorrow CSC

Remember football the business isn’t the real world I know a boy who signed with Falkirk in the early 90s when he turned 17 he was on £800 a week… no wonder some football clubs went bust :-)

Again… it’s Dermott that sanctions the bonuses and if PL wasn’t ticking the boxes he would be getting his basic and a P45 if that continued

If our team had performed in their area of expertise as well as our CEO has performed in his , then we`d be in the group stages every year.

    Peter the Great.

Sincerely hope and trust that he is not influenced in the slightest by the uninformed speculation he has to endure, that he does not head off in the foreseeable future and that we revert to a biscuit tin CEO .

As his detractors would appear to wish .

  24. Gerry, Celtic board have a remuneration committee which decides on executives Salary

Headed up by Tom Allison I believe ? ( ( who also may be about to hit a nice wee windfall- he is part of the peel group, which has over 30% of a holding in “INTU” which in turn is subject to a£2.9Billion £ bid)

Mr Allison is/was Peters mentor in business – and has done exceptionally well ?

Point is this committee decides on Peters package and not Mr Desmond

The Sevs “hate” Peter so for me that means he is doing a good job :-)

Still think the whole “bored” could do better but what do I know

Our last two games have been a joy and I would rather concentrate on what happens on the park

  26. All CEO’s and executives are grossly overpaid, relative to the value they bring alone to the organisation, and their pay and bonus levels are set by a cabal of peers who are in on the game, and the fevered atmosphere around executive recruitment is spun by a bunch of self-serving and politically motivated fans with typewriters.

The question to be asked is, if PL was no longer with us next week, for whatever reason, who would replace him and at what salary and bonus level? Are we really saying that the professional in that position needs a huge salary in order to have face validity with the football club manager? Did Brian Quinn need this when he served some of the functions which PL provides? Do all the guys in the cash rich clubs of EPL, Spain and Italy earn 3 or 4 times the going rate in Scotland just as the players do? or are they nearer in salary comparison and , if so, why?

What would Rod Petrie earn if he was headhunted as he can play hardball and lowball too it seems?

This is, at heart, a mad industry.

But there is a lot of madness in industry too. Bonuses in the good times but few penalties for moderate or just below average performances.

I just mentioned “Dermot” as I thought he was the boss and in work we sort of do as our boss tells us …. remember Esther McVeigh is my boss :-)

  29. GFTB, not complaining, just trying to understand. To me it reads like he is heavily incentivised to reach CL, this seems in contradiction to the popular narrative of heated driveways sabotaging CL success. As I said just trying to understand, no doubt we have an accountant or two in our midst who can explain.
