Ferencvaros hit Europa league highs last season

306

It is positive news that we will not face the mid-season Swedish champions next week.  Djurgardens are nowhere near as strong as Celtic, but they will be significantly fitter and by some way better than any team we have faced since Copenhagen in February.

At full strength, Ferencvaros are almost certainly a better team than Djurgardens, and they won through last night with the advantage of home soil, despite being only one game into their domestic campaign.

Unlike last season, their European record read like a history of Hungarian football over the last four decades.  The four previous years brought only one aggregate win in European qualification, against Latvian opposition, with defeats to teams from Israel, Denmark, Albania, Bosnia and Netherlands.

That all changed in season 2019-20, when they eliminated Bulgarian, Maltese and Lithuanian opponents to reach the Europa League group stage.  There, they drew home and away with Espanyol, beat CSKA in Moscow and took a point at home.  Their campaign ended there, as despite having beat Bulgarians Ludogorets Razgrad home and away in a Champions League qualifying round, they lost their Europa League home game, could only draw away, and finished third in the table.

Ferencvaros record last season is enough to give Neil Lennon plenty to think about, but playing at Celtic Park against opponents no fitter than we are, is what we would have hoped for at this stage.

Bracketing KT alongside Maurice Johnston ????

Hun like doesn’t begin to cover it.

  2. Big Jimmy.

I was shocked and very sad when KT left, but I bear him no illwill….and I hope that he stays injury free etc…and goes onto become a Superstar wherever he plays ?

    Judas ?….NOT in my eyes.

    I totally agree Big Jimmy.

KT, went to Arsenal FC, & is getting 70+K a week, which is outside of our Financial bracket,

in other words, we can not afford to pay that amount of weekly wage packets.

Times move on, not just in normal life, but also in football as well, get over it.

We got a home draw thanks to the unseen Fenian hand and the patent Fenian ball warmer!

  4. I have no ill-feeling towards Kieran Tierney. I was sad that he left but also felt it was for the best, as he was being kicked all over the shop up here with no protection from the MIBs.

Imo, Brendan Rodgers is another matter altogether. He ran away, with just about all the staff, leaving us in the lurch. He is not welcome back at Celtic Park, as far as I am concerned.

  5. No idea where the story came from,or if its just idle gossip, but having watched Bakker play a couple of time recently,he is some player.I thought that he had been signed for big money, till the commentator mentioned him.No way does he look a reserve/ youth graduate.Commentary team, full of praise for him.If he is going out on loan, sure there will be a queue for his services.

No Bobby – thanks for YouTube link.

From the brief highlights I’d have to agree with Timmy7’s earlier appraisal and then some …

That’s the worst performance from current Swedish champions I’ve ever seen.

On that basis, difficult to gauge how good Ferencvaros are.

Collectively we (myself included) were a little uneasy going into the Reykjavik game?

    Understandable, given recent negativity.

Turned out to be a canter.

We should go into this home game with some confidence. (65/35)

Hahaha well apparently according to AKBW1888 it’s cos we are the seeded team, so which is correct?

Ha-ha-ha-ha BhoyLO83, if you look @ our long term coefficency record, which is better than our

part time opponents last Tuesday 18/8/20, & is also better than the Hungarian Club we face next

Wednesday, 26/8/20, I would imagine, that is how the seeded system work, for CL Quallifiers.

Or are their no seeded Club’s & it’s just the luck of the draw?

  11. Ferecvaros were not playing a team of Celtics calibre. No pushover, but if we play,as we can,I would expect a win.Home tie vitally important.

  12. No Bobby Does It Petta

Thanks for posting link to Ferencvaros game. They appear to be a useful team but Djurgarten looked a bit inept. A couple of efforts from thirty yards out, one resulting in a goal. I thought the goalie should have got it. Slow to react. The same guy put away the second goal with aplomb. We conceded a similar chance to Reykjavik the other night but Barkas fortunately saved it. They’ll try to recreate those sort of chances on Tuesday. They missed a pile of chances in the second half so they’re not exactly clinical.

We’ll need to be alert and on our guard but let’s not elevate them to a status that they don’t deserve. I think we have the talent to beat this team if everybody plays as they can. I’m fairly sure they’ll be worrying about some of the talent we have at our disposal.

  13. I’ve got a theory on KT (and this isn’t an anti-Lawwell board bash) as I actually think Lawwell takes a lot of stick (some warranted some not)

I think KT had no intentions on leaving Celtic and would have preferred to stay for a few more years, at least until the end of this season, but was told that he would have to be sold to balance the books and for the good of the club

Tierney being a Celtic fan he would have understood

In my opinion, he was told to say it was his own decision (and not the boards) because if it was ever known he had to go against his wishes, the fans would be calling for Lawwell’s head

To this day he has kept his word but I think we will find out truth in the years to come

  14. KT kind of cultivated his image as being hardcore ultra Celtic fan . Taking the microphone to conduct the Green Brigade and when he was injured he was often in amongst the fans at away games. He gave the impression that he was here for at least the 10-in-a-row. Then suddenly he was off to London. Understandably some felt betrayed. I’m sure most of them will be over by now though.

The procedure for the draw is that a ball from the Seeded team bowl and a ball from the Unseeded team bowl are placed in another bowl and the first team drawn is the home team

We have been lucky twice but QR3 draw on Aug 31 will be luck of the draw – being the seeded team does not guarantee home tie.

  20. Disgusting treatment of Kieran.

What these so-called Celtic supporters should know, but they won’t, because the only thing they ever read is online tripe, is that the money we received for KT will alleviate the worst on the effects of lockdown on our club.

This season, no match-day revenue domestically & in Europe may cost us around £23m, if we do as well as last season – KT’s fee as we know was £25m.

Of course we didn’t know Covid was on the way when we sold him – it didn’t affect 9iar.

We, as a club, are in a much stronger position to secure 10iar & the future of the club by virtue of KT’s transfer.

He is missed, but so were Victor, Virgil & Fraser – we move on.

  22. Kieran Tierney was always going to a get offered a Much bigger salary elsewhere as he kept improving quickly.I think people read one or two stupid comments from perceived diehards and came to the conclusion there was a sizeable community slagging him off, which of course there was not. I wish KT all the best and hope he goes from strength to strength and there is a door left open for him should he ever wish to return.

Brendan Rodgers came to the conclusion that he had been rehabilitated enough in scotland to engineer a lucrative move elsewhere and he did all in his power to do so, whilst taking his eye off the ball concerning the club who was actually paying his wages at the time. When the lucrative offer did come in he could not get away quick enough.

This divides opinion with the celtic support which is fair enough.

My thoughts are he certainly improved us, helped get us the invincible season and by the time he left he perhaps was not the all conquering hero that made the huns terrified of him/us.

We received a sizeable payment from Leicester for him, so again Thanks for the memories and good luck to him but no door left open for him ever again at celtic park.

Embramike, that is a very similer, to the way they do it, when placing Club’s into Groups for the CL

Group Stage Draw. Anyway, with us being seeded, right through to the play off round. We should

have a very good chance, in reaching that stage, the play off round I’m referring too. & if we fall @

the final hurdle, (the play off round) hopefully not, we will then drop into the Europa League Group

  24. From KT’s recent interview. Does the below sound like a guy desperate to leave? Celtic got the money, please bugger off to Arsenal now and thanks for the memories and the £25M KT.

    ‐—————-

“Me and Tom Rogic were injured and he was asking if it was happening and I said ‘don’t think so mate’.

And honestly I was looking at flats round about my area because I was thinking about moving out and I’d went with my mum and my mate to go see this place and that place. This was the day before, a couple of days before.

And I told everybody ‘this is off, it’s not happening.’

Then I got the call to say ‘Celtic have said you can go, they’ve got what they want for you.“And that’s when I was down at the park. It was mental, it’s a blur.

“I was on the flight near enough greeting to my agent like ‘what’s happening here? I’m getting it stinking. This is going to be my family’s life forever, me known as what these people are making me out to be.’“

They don’t know half of it, they just assume everything and they don’t know.”

  26. Thought I’d revisit a post from a couple of weeks ago exploring our chances of progressing, given we now know more than we did back then.

First a refresh, back then we only knew our potential opponents in each round. An average of the coefficients was taken, compared to our own coef of 34 to create a win ratio, then a probability of winning each round calculated. Remember we also calculated the ongoing probability of successive wins (the cumulative). To recap (no idea if the formatting will work) –

Rd Avg coef Ratio Win chance Cumulative

    1 3.06 11.1 92% 92%

    2 7.09 4.79 83% 76%

    3 18.45 1.84 65% 49%

    4 26.36 1.29 56% 28%

What’s changed? Well we’ve won round 1 so it ceases to be relevant. We also know our opponents for rd 2, and we have a little more information on potential opponents for rds 3 and 4. So the table above is redrawn thus –

Rd Avg coef Ratio Win chance Cumulative

    2 9 4.79 79% 79%

    3 14.65 1.84 70% 55%

    4 25.44 1.29 56% 32%

Are we better off? Well, yes and no. Drawing Ferencvaros in rd 2 is (statistically) a negative as they have a coef higher than the average of the pool, so it brings our rd 2 probability down slightly though it’s still a strong 79%. The teams we can draw in rd 3 have the surprise inclusion of Dynamo Brest with a coef of 3.775 thus improving our overall chances. Rd 4 expected teams are as you were so our win chance is the same. You’ll note our (cumulative) chance of progressing past rd 3 has tipped to 55% so it’s now statistically likely. And our overall chance of progressing to the CL group stage is up to 32%, so from where we stand about a 1 in 3 chance.

Once again, this is based on an expectation that the seeded teams will progress in each of their games so it’s effectively a “worst case”, there’s still a chance the round 3 & 4 coefficients will drop as we progress.

  27. @ JHB on 20TH AUGUST 2020 2:04 PM

It probably won’t be as high as that as other costs will offset. Utilities, policing, catering, staff, stadium maintenance etc.

In any event, the loss is around half of what we have in the bank. It is roughly equivalent to the difference in revenue between CL and Europa League qualification.
