Free weekends just not right

602

There’s something not right about a free weekend in early March; we should still have been in the Cup.  Congratulations are therefore due to the five managers who remain in the competition, who have each shown remarkable abilities and are truly invaluable resources to their respective clubs – worth contract extensions all round.

Congratulations are also due to the 40,000 Aberdeen fans who will pack Celtic Park next weekend for the League Cup Final.  Opponents, Inverness, have shifted only 7,000 of their 20,000 allocation, although I hear there is a brisk trade in tickets this morning, many of which will end up in the hands of Aberdeen supporters.

40,000 Aberdeen fans at a game may be unprecedented, despite the 147,365 attendance at their 1937 Scottish Cup Final against Celtic.  No one was to know demand would be so buoyant from Aberdeen, but now the SPFL do know, they need to ensure the spare circa 13,000 tickets are sold to Aberdeen fans in a controlled manner.

Many thanks to everyone who donated to Mary’s Meals since the MyDonate link went up on Friday.  We are more than halfway there to funding the second school kitchen, at St Joseph’s Primary School in Kasungu, Malawi.  Stunned at the response.  You can get involved here.

Seville, The Celtic Movement, launches this month.

“It might not happen anytime soon but sometime down the line I’d like to think we could get there again. Maybe even go that extra mile and win the Cup. Henrik Larsson was our hero in this outstanding run and we’d probably need to look at finding another Henrik to get us there again! Remember that Celtic recently finished ahead of Benfica in Champions League Group stages and they dropped into the Europa Cup, reached the final and were very unlucky not to win it.”

Driving in Palermo is not for the faint hearted or those who believe that there is a highway code.

Much calmer in Siracusa but still a long way from the Canniesburn Road . There is a semi pro team in Siracusa –S C Siracusa – they play in the Eccelenza Sicilia league . Stadium holds @ 7k –average crowd @ 2k — some real thing Ultras . A better team than Albion Rovers . Stadium is near the bridge between Siracusa and Ortigia.

    I really like Ortigia

How about this for a competitive league? Higher population than England and GDP. Every team on list faces slow death. Champions of domestic leagues play off for 3 promotion places, so pyramid structure for every country. Thought hard about including Austria Hitler, but what the hell.

Could these countries not start talking to each other?

Natural for mediterranean countries to play each other, eastern euro play each other etc.

Personally i never want to play huns again but they’ll be there eventually in some ghastly form

  8. Years ago I worked with a bloke who played for Villa in the 60s, he got transferred to Canada and eventually ended up playing for NY Cosmos in the 70’s. He played along side Pele. Him and his team mates always wondered about Pele’s claim to have scored so many goals. They worked out he would have had to have scored well over 60 goals every season since he started as a pro (he averaged about 35 a season with Santos, so he would have to be scoring the same amount for Brazil at the same time). They chinned him about it and asked him to prove his stats. Turned out he was claiming goals that he scored as a boy in the under 12’s, friendlies, testimonials etc.

Disny make him a bad player right enough but his stats are a bit iffy.

Maradona stood on his doorstep taking pot shots at the press so he wins in the integrity stakes at least.

What I’m taking from Winning Captains observations whichI have also observed, is that even when we do not perform to our best, the opposition have required a referee’s decision to get the result.

Over 38 league games we perform at our best more often and even where we do not the result is rarely fatal to ultimate objective.

However in the cup, if that happens to be a day when we are not at our best, and that happens to all teams, the refereeing is the deciding factor.

The instances WC quotes back that up.

    Thanks for the further information.

My wife, who has done most of the arrangements advises me that we will be using public transport to get around the first week when we are in Palermo. Given the size of the island she tells me that a car is a must for the second week when we are in Siracusa to see all of the sights we (she) wants to see. Looking forward to it, apart from the driving.

To add my tuppence worth to the three best Italian players I have seen:

    Rivera

    Baresi

    Maldini

Pele’s stats are in his book. Santos played a lot of friendly and exhibition matches in order to keep Pele and the other Brazil stars of the time.

His stats are a bit dodgy in that respect but they are genuine. The guy was top drawer. he is for me the greatest player of all time. Not sure he will ever be bettered in that respect.

Won his first world cup at 17 and was instrumental in the greatest ever world cup team of all time in 1970.

He could play anywhere. He was also a very good goal keeper. His book is a decent read. I would recommend it.

Good road heading west from Siracusa ———-use it if you are intending to visit Noto, Ragusa Ibla and Modica. If you are intending to go to Agrigento take the bypass which avoids Gela. Driving in Gela is to be avoided.

Jock Stein actually thought Di Stefano was the best ever. I wouldnt argue with big Stein but I’m just too young to comment on Di Stefano anyway.

Can’t deny he was up there but only the second best for me behind Maradona.

Maradona could keep it up with a golf ball. Pele needs viagra. :)

Franco Baresi was a class act.

    He had everything imo.

    As good as the Kaiser.

..and as good as our own Kaiser – George Connelly!

He and his older brother Beppe who played for Inter were orphaned at an early age when their parents died in a car crash.
