Gangster clubs, brutish fans, identity politics

729

The Daily Record’s political editor today published information obtained from the Scottish Government by a Freedom of Information Request, where Police Scotland note Newco “actively engaged” supporters to break lockdown rules in March this year.

Following Newco’s game with St Mirren on 6 March, Police Scotland received assurances from Newco that they would encourage fans to stay at home.  The Police memo stages, “Whilst assurances were given this did not materialise.”

The Police go on to stage Newco made “numerous statements encouraging celebration, including from the manager (Steven Gerrard).”

“Both the Manager and players actively engaged from within the stadium with fans gathered in disgraceful displays of encouragement, in solid opposition to the public safety issues arising, to their responsibilities given the privileges under which football operates, and to the commitments they had made around public communications.”

The Government should have acted on this information in March.  Football privileges were being actively flouted by one club but it took further incidents this month before Nicola Sturgeon felt it necessary to take on Newco.  This is in stark contrast to her grabbing the mic. when Celtic followed her own rules during their trip to Dubai.

You will see not contrition from Newco.  Instead, they will deflect and distract.  Let them sink in their own sewage.

Gangster clubs operate across Europe.  They stir-up identity sentiment among brutish fans and intimidate politicians who need to fish in the same identity waters.  It takes brave political leadership to stop the rot.

  7. Managed to wake up early doors, just as Josh Taylor was making his way towards the ring in Vegas last night. Not that I saw the fight, no, back to the old school days, listening to the fight on the wireless, courtesy of Mike Costello, Steve Bunce and Joe Gallagher on Radio 5. And what a fight it was, and it was Taylor’s two knockdowns of Ramirez in round 6 and 7 that made the difference on the cards, just as well since you never know what is on the cards in Vegas. Never knew Josh was a Hibernian boy, and there is talk of him having his next fight at Easter Road, only 800 at the fight last night, which was 800 more than watched Hibs lose at Hampden yesterday, not much point of a brawl in an empty stadium. George Square might be the better choice. Anyways well done Josh, you are in great company, Lynch, MacGowan, Buchanan and Watt et al.

  8. Ive just read Part of the OBF Act 2012 and below is a small Extract from that bill…

    Support and opposition

Opponents argue that the Offensive Behaviour Act compromises the principle of free speech. In June 2013, The Herald described it as “knee-jerk legislation” which needed to be revisited, arguing that “Scotland cannot arrest its way out of sectarianism”.[4]

In December 2014, MSPs met with representatives from Fans Against Criminalisation (FAC), an organisation that campaigns against the Offensive Behaviour Act. The meeting came after an incident where a football fan wearing a “Free Palestine” T-shirt was questioned by police at Tynecastle. Defending the legislation, SNP MSP John Mason told FAC he believes fans wearing “Yes” badges at football matches should also be susceptible to police action.[5] Fans groups have also raised concerns about the law.[3]

At their annual conference in 2014, the Scottish Socialist Party backed calls for the Offensive Behaviour Act to be repealed immediately.

Funnily enough, the SNP MSP mentioned above ” John Mason”…is the very same john Mason who is my current MSP, and who has invited me to discuss matters over a Pint ?

So at the time HE also reckoned that fans wearing ” YES” Badges ( I assume that meant YES for Scottish Independence ?)…should ALSO be subject to Police questions etc ?

    Thats VERY ODD ?

IF anyone has ” Specific” Questions/ Issues in relation to the OBF Act of 2012, please feel free to Post them on here and I will take note and consider what Points/Issues to put to my MSP ?

When the Police were ” KETTLING” Celtic supporters , was that ” Kettling” under the OBF Act, or had THAT Police action occurred BEFORE The OBF Act ?

  15. Having watched Hibs yesterday .

My only interest was to have a good look at some of the players our fans and media have us linked with.

Doig .Not even close to being the next KT.He was shockingly exposed for his lack of height ,strength ,and defensive positioning for the Saints goal.

He was pushed aside like a wee boy playing against the big boys.

Porteous . Rash ,lacks composure ,Gives away too many fouls .

His slip and misplaced pass ,put the Saints player clean through ,in on goal ,for his miss that led to the penalty.

    Boyle .Absolutely anonymous.

Nisbet. Doesn’t show for the ball, picks the wrong passes, and rushed the one chance he had.

A half hearted Griffiths is a much better player.

Only seen him once and he’s not linked to us ,but the Hibs keeper had two wonder saves at the penalty.

Worth keeping an eye on him.

I was thinking more about Mark Walters.

Either he just craves media attention or he’s happy to be used as a perpetual patsy, wheeled out every time the huns need a squirrel to deflect from their institutionalised, er, racism. If that’s the case he’s either completely thick or a complete hypocrite.

Whatever his rationale, it doesn’t reflect well on him.

Would a FOI request force police Scotland to reveal whether or not they had found evidence that a video had been doctored?

I suspect that if they had found such evidence, it might have been mentioned in their statement.

Ask him if he still thinks we shouldn’t be allowed to park our cars within a one mile radius of Celtic Park and is it still his view that people outside Glasgow shouldn’t be supporting Celtic.

  21. Humza Yousaf refuses to apologise for controversial Rangers tweet as club signals legal action

The SNP politician insisted he was right to ‘call out’ anti-Catholic bigotry in his controversial comments against Rangers players celebrating their league win.

HUMZA also went on to say that the behaviour of “Ranjairz fans” on the 15th was the MOST Anti Catholic , ANTI Irish behaviour that he has ever witnessed.

Humza is an SNP Minister ” Calling THEM Out” as Justice Secretary of Scotland, and can I ASSUME that UNIONIST Celtic supporters on here would WELCOME and actually PRAISE Humza for his Comments in the very near future…OR Does THEIR UNIONISM PREVENT them from praising an SNP Minister on Blogs ?

Surely, ANY Celtic supporting Unionist would be THANKING Humza for ” Calling THEMS OUT ?

…After all …EVERY Celtic supporter wants to see the Huns put in their place….DON’T THEY ?

  22. EL – following party political lines is not exclusive to the SNP every political party does the same. Tories never stray from party lines. Labour spend most of its time fighting each other and trying to find out what it stands for, mostly tory policy under a red banner where the rich get richer as the rest lose out. Power hungry more than anything else.

  23. BEFORE any smart ass unionist jumps in….I am FULLY AWARE that Humza is no longer the Justice minister, as he was promoted to health secretary a few days ago.

Ziggydoc1 – Yeah I watched the Brentford v Bournemouth game.

Toney looked decent without really standing out, a busy, energetic and athletic forward. He showed up around the pitch, got stuck in and fought for the ball, while still managing to be thereabouts whenever Brentford got into the opposition box. He managed a few duff touches, passes, or shots around the box, but then most players do. What I didn’t see was close skill on the ball, the type Eddie has.

Looked like a 10-15m player. Is he 30m? Yesterday didn’t convince me, but it’s just one game and I could end up eating my words.

    ____

That’s a really good analysis and similar to what I thought. Only my first time seeing him.

I’m going to watch Lee O’Connor again, at 12:30 in the Tranmere game. Just hoping that one or two of the plethora of players we have on loan are able to be first team squad. Best we’re heard about seems to be Hjelde, based on the reports from Ross County.

  29. Wonder if the BBC want to interview Sinky on his experience of more recent examples of racism

  30. Humza Yousaf again talked about anti catholic anti irish hate in glasgow, more than most other politicians. He described the real issue rather than hiding behind the false S word.

He may have said a lot of things that are questionable, I have no idea, i am sure we all have, but he is a brave man standing up to the racists.

What IS exclusive to the SNP is that elected representatives and party officials are not allowed to criticise party policy or party colleagues.

No other mainstream political party operates like that.

So it makes no difference which of them Big Jimmy has a bevvy with, the answers will all be the same.
