Gladbach season hits crunch week

364

Borussia Monchengladbach slipped to exactly mid-table in the Bundesliga on Saturday after giving 10-man Hamburg their second point of the season. On Wednesday we are still going to face a team vastly superior to anyone we will face in domestic football this season, but the visitors will not be as confident travelling to Glasgow as they were when the draw was made back in August.

Like Celtic, Borussia would not have fancied their chances of progressing to the knock out stage after their opening group game, but they now have to concern themselves more with becoming competitive against in Germany. That prospect isn’t about to get any easier, as after Celtic on Wednesday they travel to face Bayern Munich on Saturday.

All of this will feed into how Borussia approach the game. A point would allow them to take their head-to-head competition with Celtic back to Germany with hopes of finishing at least in the Europa League spot.

Celtic were not at their most fluid against Motherwell on Saturday (a significant sign when a 2-0 win can be described in that manner), but Brendan Rodgers will be clear in his game plan for Wednesday – press high, as we did against Manchester City last month.

It’s going to be a night which will require every ounce of strength from a packed Celtic Park. I’ve spoken to several Celtic managers and players about the impact the crowd can have in European nights. If we’re up for it, this one is there for us.

There’s a Family Fanzone at George Square from 13:00 on Wednesday afternoon.  Players will appear at 14:00 with club legends there at 16:00 and activities throughout the afternoon.  With the October break it’s an excellent opportunity to get into town and get into the mood early.

Macjay, what’s your schedule on Wednesday for the game?

Must be a bit of an odd time but I’m sure you and your pals have plans for a CL blaw oot. When I was in Aus last year I was made very welcome at the Perth CSC. I think all the games I watched were early K.O. games so not a problem time locally. Special licences for the verly early morning kick off times?

Anyway, enjoy the game and hopefully we get the result and atmosphere we all want. If its anything like the Man City game my heid will explode…………………..again.

I’m building up for it already, It gets everyone in different ways but I guess many will understand the slow burn excitement I’m experiencing that builds to a volcanic eruption on entering paradise on Wednesday night.

  6. Has there been a CL game anytime in the past that has drawn less attention in print or air time?

Is it because we are wary of a mid level Bundesliga side that is suffering an injury crisis?

Is it due to confidence following our display against City?

Is it due to faith in Brendan fielding a tactically sound and hungry side?

I had a wee listen in to today’s Clyde phone in hoping to here some insights from the callers.

Instead I was treated to BFDJ telling us his team and tactics to beat us on Sunday and callers offering alternative but equally useless suggestions.

Where does all their confidence come from?

And why are we forgetting the biggest game is Wednesday, before a packed stadium and a world wide audience?

We can tackle the semi final on Friday when we assess our physical and mental condition after the CL game is over.

I love garlic and it’s good for my heart, they say, but 40 cloves could be just a wee bit too much even ahead of Hallowe’en.

    Ingredients:

    4 Tbsp olive oil

    1/2 cup flour

Salt and pepper, to taste, for chicken only

1 chicken, cut into legs, thighs, and breasts

    4 Tbsp butter, diced, divided

    40 garlic cloves, not peeled

    1/2 cup scallions, sliced

    2 Tbsp shallots, chopped

    6 medium-size carrots, peeled

    6–8 sprigs fresh thyme

    1 tsp allspice

    1 cup dry white wine

    1 cup chicken stock

    1 Tbsp lemon zest

1 Tbsp lemon juice, fresh squeezed

    2 tsp salt

    1/2 tsp pepper

    1/4 cup seeded tomatoes, diced

    2 Tbsp parsley, chopped

  16. I hadn’t looked as far as the cooking but here it is.

BTW I have always believed a Dutch Oven was something entirely different.

    Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a Dutch oven over medium heat, warm the oil. Flour and season the chicken with salt and pepper to taste. Brown the chicken, a few pieces at a time, until all are done. Reserve the chicken on a plate.

Add 2 Tbsp butter and the garlic cloves to the Dutch oven and cook, stirring occasionally, until the garlic begins to brown. Stir in the scallions and shallots and cook until they begin to soften. Put in the carrots and let them begin to get a little color. Sprinkle the thyme and allspice over the mixture.

Add the wine, stock, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt, and pepper, then place the chicken back into the Dutch oven. Cover with a lid and bake in the over for 20 minutes. Remove the lid and bake another 10 minutes, or until the chicken’s internal temperature reaches 165°F.

Remove the chicken to a serving dish.

Using a slotted spoon, remove the carrots and garlic cloves, serving them alongside the chicken.

Stir the tomatoes, parsley, and 2 Tbsp butter into the remaining sauce in the Dutch oven. Spoon the finished sauce over the chicken. Serve with French bread or crostini pieces.

Personally, I’d leave the preparation to the knowledgeable adult who among her other duties is my carer. :-)

Martin O’Neill has revealed the role Sir Alex Ferguson played in getting him into the managerial seat at Celtic Park back in 2000.

O’Neill, currently the Republic of Ireland manager, was recommended to Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond by the former Manchester United manager.

“I got a call, initially from Alex Ferguson, saying would I have an interest – that essentially the owner Dermot Desmond would like to speak to me,” O’Neill said.

“I consequently found out – Dermot knew Sir Alex very well at that time but didn’t know me at all – and really Sir Alex was the one that actually recommended me for the job.

“I went to see Dermot and the board members in London and for once in my life I must have done alright at the interview.”

O’Neill went on to win seven trophies as Celtic manager and delivered Celtic’s first domestic Treble since the Jock Stein era, although arguably his greatest achievement was in taking the club to the UEFA Cup final in Seville in 2003.

“Childhood days, naturally from where I was you were either Celtic or Rangers, brought up in Northern Ireland, and of course I was heavily into Celtic,” O’Neill told BBC Scotland.

“So this opportunity to go and manage the club was something I didn’t feel I could possibly turn down. Plus the fact they were in a bit of difficulty – I think Rangers had won the league by about 20 points and were really dominating Scotland.

“So here was this opportunity – a fantastic club, playing second fiddle to Rangers for some time and an opportunity to turn the tables.”

O’Neill’s family also encouraged him to make the move, while a poignant memory also played a role.

“I remember the words of my father who did say ‘if you ever get the opportunity to play for Celtic, then go and take it’,” added O’Neill, who left Celtic in 2005.

“Unfortunately he wasn’t around the time I was going to go and manage them.

“I think there’s always a wee bit too much made of making people proud but I think if my father had been around, I think he would have been, he would have been absolutely delighted.”

  21. Thanks to those on here for their support in relation to my joke about a woman, a watch and a cooker. I’m not about to thank anyone for NOT being offended !

Funny how that particular joke was deemed sexist and yet others such as ” the woman who can make love for 90 minutes wasn’t ” ? Maybe Timgreen had a wee laugh at that particular one but didn’t want to admit it ?

Also funny, is how my joke about ” Gold Condoms” a few days ago wasn’t deemed as sexist against MEN ?

That particular joke is clearly a woman slagging off a man and yet I didn’t see Timgreen or anyone else being offended ? I’ve told ALL these jokes to hundreds of women over the years and yet Timgreen was the only person that took offence ?

One last point, Timgreen not only accused me of being ” dense”, but also sought to remind me that this is the 21st century?

Allow me to assume that TIMGREEN is a Celtic fan ?

If so, will Timgreen be honest on here asap and enlighten me as to whether TIMGREEN has EVER sang a Celtic and/or Rebel song anywhere since the year 2000 ?

If the answer is yes ? Then Timgreen may wish to re consider singing songs that the vast majority are from the 20TH CENTURY, considering that TIMGREEN is such a 21st century person ?

  26. For most of my long life I’ve loved numerous women, so much so that many people who have known me ( male and female), would accuse me of being a bit of a ” jack the lad” ?

In those long years, I’ve always tried to ensure that I only have relationships with women.

Does that fact make me ” sexist” against men ?

    HH

I only seek clarity, as even on this site I’ve read men describe their womenfolk as being their ” better half” ?

According to some, those men who describe their womenfolk in such a manner, are those men being demeaning against men, by implying that women are somehow better then men, I wouldn’t think so ?

Likewise, I’ve lost f””kingcountover the years of numerous women being quick to tell me how they can ” multi task” and men can’t ?

    Was I ever offended ?……..eh NO !

Maybe I should be, according to the rules that the PC brigade like to try and enforce on us men ?

People like TIMGREEN should maybe reconsider enjoying a sport that without doubt is STILL DOMINATED by men, on and off the pitch, as is that not supporting sexism ?

    I only ask.
