Howe agent comments correct

289

I hear that Eddie Howe’s agent was correct with his comments to Sky Sports last night, while the usual suspects in the Scottish media spun misinformation on top of what Sky reported.  It was likely the same agent who leaked that the former Bournemouth manager met Celtic last week.

It is an agent’s job to raise their client’s profile and flush out prospective employers.  If an unemployed manager is meeting Celtic, you will hear about it; those in a job need to be a bit more circumspect.  None of the latter’s agents have said a word publicly.

As the agent explained to Sky, Eddie does not want to take a job until the summer; I believe this is consistent with what he told Celtic.  Anything you subsequently read about backroom staff forced upon him is nonsense.  It did not happen.  The story is an invention to undermine Celtic, an occurrence which has an obsessional compulsion in some places.

There are reasons Howe is keen to sit on his hands for a few more weeks, the same reasons the agent is talking to Sky and someone leaked the meeting with Celtic (he has not been to Glasgow for any meetings).  There are no vacancies in the EPL right now, but that might change at Newcastle, Southampton (30 mile drive from Bournemouth), or Everton, whom he supported as a boy.  Before Eddie puts pen to paper, his agent will want all potential suitors checked out.  He is not doing his job, otherwise.  This is football.

Right now, Eddie Howe is the only manager whose agent is talking to the media, raising his profile with you and me above those who are speaking only to Celtic.  It is encouraging that we are working with this level of candidate, but until an appointment is made, or another agent breaks cover, we will need to endure the usual tripe from the usual sources.  Still, at least they are not taunting us with Roy Keane this week.

  1. GARNGAD – indeed, and it doesn’t seem to change much regardless of who the manager is. I had a quick look online just now and they have had 27 management changes since 2000 (including temporary appointments). It is the classic club for the Roy Hodgson/Neil Warnock/Sam Allardyce type of guys who can help them survive in the EPL.

Thon southern Englishman would be gone like snow off a dyke first laurel wreath he secured if appointed. Something to bear in mind that shouldn’t necessarily preclude him from getting the job. Hopefully McKay will be the one to offer a confident and public take it or leave it now ultimatum to blood himself into his new role. No man bigger than the club and a statement of intent from the new regime. We need someone with maturity to coach the team, who’s been there and done it, respects the history of the club and has a sense of personal honour. Some things are bigger than winning and right now, after the last unpleasant and disappointing year, getting everyone back supporting one another; PLC, players, manager and fans, is that bigger thing. We need to get back to unity.

On this thread alone today the media output has been described as tripe and crud.

And yet, lamentably, Celtic fans in sufficient numbers are paying for, and consuming, this tripe and crude.

    It’s in our hands.

Kill the demand for tripe and crud.

The supply of tripe and crud will stop.

If it’s a case of EH wanting Hughes ,get him in,another salary is a drop in the ocean compared to the millions we’ve wasted in recent years

    …………………

    Bada

I think that would be a mistake. If Hughes was appointed DoF, he would leave along with Howe in a couple of seasons because he’s Howe’s pal and then we would be right back where we are now. If we find a job for Hughes just to fit him in, I think Howe would go to Hughes to conduct business as opposed to working with the DoF that Celtic appointed. We would soon be hearing stories about competing jealousies and it would damage the Club.

I think we need a DoF like Fergal Hardin or the Italian guy we were hearing about a couple of weeks ago. They have access to the contracts of dozens of top young players whom we could benefit from in signings or loan deals. A lot more than Richard Hughes, I would imagine. The DoF needs to be paid an excellent salary so that he remains at the club during transitions between coaches/managers. He sets up the structure and needs to keep appointing quality managers/ coaches so that the club goes on unaffected by change. I don’t think we would get that with Hughes.

  7. Back to Basics – see my post at 12.43 on previous page. CQN is feeding us the same tripe disguised as news. The idea of this site was to give us an alternative source of club news, sadly it is printing the same made up rubbish on a daily basis that can be found in the DR, the Sun and the ET.

  8. The Howe situation brings about that ‘gut’ feeling I get now and then that what I am following at present is not the football I want to follow. If Eddie Howe comes he will be here two or three seasons, four at the very outside. If he does well that is. The irks me. Maybe it shouldn’t but it does.

We will get a young upcoming talent or three from parts as yet unknown and like Dembele, Wanyama, Forster and even the homegrown dyed in the wool Tim KT, we can expect them to leave us in a few years if they are good enough to sell.

Maybe it has always happened? Dalglish, McClair, or petit merde, Charlie ridiculous and others – but there isn’t even an expectation anymore that a player will stay long term and build a career at a club they grow to love. Same with managers.

Perhaps I’m nostalgic for something that never existed or wanting something that never will.

  9. TOSB – a good point regarding Hughes.

I can understand a manager wanting to bring his own coaching staff but to decide who is the DOF? No way. That is the job of DD and the board (hopefully with McKay´s input). If Howe has a problem working with the preferred man, be that Harkin or another, then we withdraw the job offer and move on.

The ususal rumours of he doesn’t want to move North, he wants an EPL job, his family don’t want to live in Glasgow etc. etc. have been heard before. Now we are hearing Hughes, his preferred DOF, has the same concerns. Doesn’t want to return to Glasgow, his family prefer to stay in Bournemouth.

We know how this will end so we should end it now and move on.

  10. JHB

I suspect you are trying to drive a wedge between fans on here and trying to set us at each other’s throats with all the stuff about Peter Lawell. He’s leaving, his influence is waning. No one is biting.

Yes, I agree totally. Howe is yesterday’s man as far as Celtic are concerned. Let’s get the DoF in place and then quickly appoint a manager.

    Agreed

But Celtic are either ignoring the writing on the wall, or more likely keeping us all in the dark with the intention of either being gazumped by an EPL club or giving Howe the responsibility of calling time on the whole charade.

The alternative is us saying Howe’s demands for taking the job are unacceptable to the club and being engulfed in a media frenzy.

I am intrigued if not downright amused at P67 suggesting we are in talks with persons currently in employment.

If that’s the case why are we talking to Howe when we were told all winter that nobody who was available at that time was under consideration?

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on

Lead story on talkSPORT today is Swansea players to boycott social media for a week in fight against racism. Imagine going back 30 years and trying to explain that

It’s much safer to go to the game, we are able to see the best players on tv whenever we like, great strides have been taken to make the game more tolerant and accepting. Other than that its a “worse” game than back then. Homogenized, sterilized, monetized. Celtic have to play the game or fall behind unfortunately, the perfect club doesn’t exist.

Is Hughes still working for Bournemouth ? If he is then it’s no stretch of the imagination to think that if EH left he may well stay on, unless EH is moving upwards but then would any if the big clubs (as surely that’s where he’s looking at eventually ) entertain that particular demand, they’d have a DoF in place. As Lennybhoy alluded too it might well be Harkin and Hughes.

I decided to look into the John James site for the first time in about 6 months. He’s running with the same sh**e about Lawell interfering by trying to foist Kennedy on Eddie Howe and not allowing Howe to appoint his own staff. John James is a total fantasist.

I’m surprised at Paul Larkin saying it’s coming out of Howe’s camp. Lawell will be leaving at the end of June. He won’t be involved in this. Dominic McKay wouldn’t put up with this for a minute. Howe’s agent told everyone last night the reason why Howe isn’t coming to Celtic at this time. He’s waiting to see what his options are at the end of the season. There is zero chance John Kennedy will be foisted on anyone. He might be appointed manager but he won’t be foisted on any other new manager. 😃

TOSB- what about Kennedy being foisted on the fans? No thanks. It really is an admission of total failure from Lawwell and Desmond, to be fannying about for a new manager, since last October/November…..HH

  29. Res 12 showed that the supporters are mugs…. not the people who put it forward initially.. but at AGM the moment they said that it was going to be discussed away from AGM then i shook my head and knew it was buried forever. The board HATE fans especially vocal ones. They just like their money. God knows what they say about fans in private but what they sy an how they treat fans in public is appaling.

  30. I hope the club have many other irons in the fire with regards to a new head coach / manager /DoF, we did use a recruitment agency didnt we?

I hope if it is Howe ask him why he didnt settle at Burnley and had to move back to the south coast, Glasgow is considerably further north than Burnley, imagine he is given a large budget his plans for the club approved a 3 to 5 year plan for the club to progress and he ups sticks after 6 months cause he cannot settle, big risk.

  31. Next season is lost already.. a new manager at very latest should have been in during January after league was lost. get a view of current squad players and get one or two in for next season. at this rate we will have a squad orf around 15 for europa league qualifirers.. you can forget about CL qualifiers already

Especially if he’s allowed to pick his own DoF, who’ll probably be off with him.

The idea of a DoF is to try to minimize damage in these scenarios.
