Hugely important League Cup tie

873

We have had games which were hugely important to the club, and to our new manager, some which were ‘must win’ games, which were ultimately lost, but tomorrow’s League Cup tie against Hearts is a must win game for different reasons.

A year ago we lost in this competition to one of the worst teams to win at Celtic Park in the last half century, possibly longer, but thus Hearts side are a Premiership team in all but name and come with the weight of their history behind them to fell Scottish football’s last superpower.

I’ve seen Hearts win at Celtic Park before, there is one particular painful memory as they taunted us while drawing, but Ronny and his new recruits should know, this game ranks above all league matches in order of importance.

  3. RIP Mr Divers

The Celt and The Teacher deserved great respect and admiration. A very quiet and unassuming teacher who I think really thought of himself as a teacher first and an ex-player second, at least when he was in the class room.

He deserves praise in my mind for attempting to teach me economics through 4th and 5th year – in fact I failed my standard grade and he still let me do the higher. I have no idea why – maybe he liked me, maybe he liked having me in his class, maybe he thought I would pick it up at higher level (I didn’t – failed that as well!).

I’ll remember him for his limping walk, his red Maserati in the car park, his smile and his story explaining diminishing marginal utilities – one I still use today as it made so much practical sense I’ll never forget it.

He only really talked about football a few times that I can remember – one story about a cup replay at Hampden in rotten weather where he was free in the box when a cross came in and due to the mud he slipped and ended up sitting on the ball comes to mind! My Mom and my Aunt remember seeing him in the hoops and they both reckon he was a fine player and goalscorer.

Sad news for me. Rest in peace Johnny Divers. You’ll never walk alone.

Shockeroonie, In Scottish parliament, Salmond damns the Huns for their “thugish” behaviour in George square. None of the “unionist” parties makes a comment including Lamont. Shame.

    ===

Was that posted to highlight the irony of Alex condemning the Hun? Not considered part of the fabric of Scottish Society anymore now or worthy of praise for their nationwide broadcast singing their sectarian and racist anthems ; emm one wonders why?

Watched that and in the Edinburgh derby saw WW get 2 good goals in a 4-2 win against Hibs. Easy to see why Jock signed him.

I’ve still got the St mirren game on Betamax, and I’m on camera throwing the ball back to murdo for a throw in which lead up to a goal.

My contribution to the build up to the goal was ignored by all major newspapers the following day.

  24. Saddened to hear of the death of John Divers.

When I was a wee lad, before ever being taken to CP, John was a player I ‘knew’ only because I heard the grown ups talking about him and a year or two later through seeing photos and bubblegum cards etc…

He is one of those, like Charlie Gallagher, who were my first touch stones with Celtic FC.

I guess I’m just looking back fondly to my youth and although I never knew Mr Divers I feel a little of me has died too.

    RIP

  25. Someone asked earlier if it was true that after asking Paul Mcginley for an autograph , the guy ripped it up. Don’t know if that happened but did hear earlier Paul say he was a West Ham fan
