Intelligent play, Directors’ box hospitality competition

377

Champions League match day six was a dead rubber, I wasn’t at the game only watched on TV, but two days on I’m still full of the emotional thrill of the occasion.  With that in mind, the thought that today will be the players final training session before a league game tomorrow illustrates the challenge for Brendan Rodgers.

The players put everything into the game in Manchester, they were visibly flagging near the end.  They will also have shared the high of the occasion.  Bringing that all together to face a team who have been planning nothing but how to frustrate a potentially lethargic and distracted Celtic for a week and you have a game punters would generally avoid backing the favourites in.

News that James Forrest’s hamstring isn’t causing too much concern is welcome.  We’ve all been there.  You feel the twinge but it’s not enough to stop you, so you carry on.  James has more experience of injury than most footballers, as a consequence it looks like he left the field before a “tightness” became an injury.  He was a loss to the game but rather that than a loss to the season.  This counts as very intelligent play.

I’d be reluctant to press James into action tomorrow, especially as it gives Gary Mackay-Steven an opportunity to revisit Firhill, where he scored 37 seconds into his Celtic debut.

Directors’ Box hospitality auction ending soon!

Disrespectful Celtic broke SPFL rules and Chris Davies wouldn’t even shake our hands blasts James McFadden

The Motherwell assistant manager launches blistering attack on Hoops counterpart Chris Davies

Motherwell’s James McFadden has branded Celtic assistant manager Chris Davies “disrepectful” and accused the Hoops of breaking SPFL rules.

The Fir Park row refuses to go away after an explosion of claim, counter-claim and name calling between the clubs following Saturday’s Premiership clash.

Now McFadden has waded in to the rammy that stemmed from Mark McGhee ‘s attempts to stop Celtic using the goalmouth for shooting practice instead of portable posts on the wing, in order to protect the Fir Park pitch.

League rules state that portable goals should be used for goalkeeping drills if provided and that “the goalmouth area shall be used by goalkeepers only if portable goals are not provided or for crossing practice and then only for not more than 20 minutes”.

And Well No.2 McFadden said: “Celtic warmed up in the wrong area, they shouldn’t have been taking shots in the goal. There’s a portable goal provided, which by the rules they have to use. We use it every stadium we go to and Celtic refused to use it.

“He (Davies) wasn’t listening to the groundsman, so the manager went up and told him he had to move, and he wasn’t happy.

“There was nothing during the game in terms of animosity, nothing back and forward, and Chris Davies comes up and doesn’t shake hands after the game, which for me is a lack of respect.

“A lot has been said about the way the manager reacted, but we went to Parkhead and lost 5-0, we took it on the chin, we shook hands and said ‘Well done, you were the better team’.

“Chris Davies decides not to come up and shake people’s hands, put his face in other people’s faces, which is a lack of respect. So the manager took offence to that and quite rightly so.”

Davies claimed on Tuesday that Motherwell were “doing everything they can on and off the pitch to disrupt what we’re doing”.

McFadden said: “To be honest I don’t know what he’s talking about, because the (Celtic) kit man was in here on Friday afternoon putting the kit out at three o’clock.

“We have still got young boys that need to get changed, need to get showers, we put them out the dressing room.

“So I think we were more than accommodating.

“If we were doing everything in our power to unsettle them, we would have made them put their kit in at the same time as everyone else.

“We weren’t playing any games with them. We are not an unwelcoming club. Anybody that comes here is made more than welcome.

“Going back to the point, teams don’t shoot into our goal in the warm-up, there’s a portable goal provided and they have to use it by the rules of the SPFL.

“Everybody else adheres to it. So I don’t think that was unsettling.

“Our pitch is probably one of the best in Scotland at the minute, and there’s a reason for that. And we want to keep it that way.

“Everywhere we go we shoot into a portable goal at the side, we shoot into a portable goal at the side of our pitch.”

The former Scotland international added about Davies’ comments: “I think that was looking at their first-half performance and maybe trying to make an excuse. Obviously they came back strongly in the second half and they were too much for us in the end.

“But we played fair. The only issue was we were trying to protect our pitch, that we spend a lot of money and time on.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Chris Cadden is still receiving treatment on the calf strain that forced him off against Celtic but McFadden is hopeful he will be fit for Saturday’s visit of Kilmarnock. Lee Lucas is back training following a knee injury.

Charity auctions work by people with a bit of money showing off how much money they have to other people with a bit of money by spending way over the odds for something because it’s for charity.

The concept doesn’t really work on ebay.

It looks like someone has bought something for less than it cost the donor to provide.

No harm done, but maybe an opportunity squandered.

Posted a query on the blog in the past as to why a raffle isn’t a better idea? Gives many more the chance to participate. Guessing it’s because it’s thought that an auction would raise more money – but not sure…

    Maybe Winning Captains could advise?

  6. Sorry if this has already been mentioned but the ‘Celtic’ coach in court today, in NI, was shown, in a film clip, dressed in Hibs training gear, putting out Hibs kit, in the Hibs dressing room.

He was still described as a former Celtic coach.

  7. prince of keepers on

Motherwell n media really labouring this non story, shooting practice is not a goalkeeping drill but a shooting drill for outfield players which normally only takes 5-10 mins of Celtic’s warm up. So no rule infringement, McGhee and McFadden showing lack of class.

  8. VALE BHOY

He should be turned over to his victims and their family’s to deal with him.

  9. Are McGhee and McFadden being paid by the press to keep this “story” going?

    Nothing would surprise me.

I see Gordon Smith, ex SFA and RFC (IL) CEO, is once again the BBC go to guy for his expert opinion on child abuse in Scottish football.

Is that the same Gordon Smith who, when chairing a meeting of a failed takeover gang of RFC (IL), had a little snigger when some wise guy from the floor said something about doing the same as Celtic and bring through our own boys? Thought he might still be busy with his carer duties.

  14. Fully expect the Motherwell pitch story to be still running this time next year. The big story here is James McFadden using the word disrespectful.Any word with respect in it should surely have © Mark Warbiola.Meantime lawyers are currently on their way to Fir Park.Aretha Franklin is next on the list.

  15. McGhee using all his experience……of being sacked by about 8 different clubs, a perennial failure as a manager.

Thiink that the words of former Italian referee, Graziano Cesari, “Referee Craig Thomson is always disastrous” or the quote from the British Ambassador to Turkey re Thomson would make a good banner for tomorrow’s game. He really is diabolical. HH

I believe that the company providing the prize suggested an auction to Paul, simply because that’s what they have done previously.

When Paul posted this the other day there was some immediate feedback suggesting a raffle would be a better way to go. I agree with this sentiment and messaged Paul on it, predicting we’d raise a higher sum in the process.

Paul came back and said ‘yes, good points’ so we will go with a raffle on the next one.

It takes a bit of organising so give us a few weeks and we’ll get one up maybe at the start of the year.
