It will be the right deal or no deal as Celtic look for January bling

376

Trying so hard not to get drawn in to transfer window nonsense but our old pal Chris Sutton got the better of me last night on BT Sport. He has been assured Moussa is happy to stay at Celtic this window (presumably by the player himself, or his agent), so concludes that somehow Chris Davies is undermining the player by suggesting he is not playing due to transfer speculation around him.

I have not spoken to Moussa’s agent but I have heard lots about him. He is thoroughly professional and if Chris Sutton did manage to get a word from him, he is likely to have been 100% on-message. There have been no amateur dramatics from Moussa’s side, but that doesn’t mean the world and Own Coyle’s auntie doesn’t want to sign him.

January is famously a rubbish month to sign players, so if anyone wants to acquire Moussa, Celtic will hold out for top price. The same is true for our signing targets. Brendan has significant funds to spend, but the last thing he needs is to load the squad with more of the same.

When the manager arrived 18 months ago, improving results was a fairly straightforward proposition. Now, after twice qualifying for the Champions League and winning all four domestic trophies available to him, the job of improving Celtic is considerably more difficult. These are the joys of planning for successive trebles and a third consecutive season of Champions League football.

We are a week away from the window closing and the ball is in play, but you will not receive a bling hit this month, just to keep everyone happy. We will do the right deals or no deal, like it, or, express mild frustration, followed by a cognitive alignment indicating acceptance of the inherent wisdom. Or just lump it.

Being able to hold your nerve is another joy of planning for a successive treble.

Never met him but I’ve been a fan for over thirty years, I’ve seen the fall many times. He seemed to be a very complicated, very intelligent man, unable to compromise, with a completely independent spirit. I’ve always loved his music, the last time I saw them live they blew me away as much as the first time.

It’s often said but it’s very true in this case that the world is a much poorer place without him in it.

  2. Sad to hear about the death of Mark E Smith. Saw the Fall many times and as John Peel said “Always the same always different”

  3. David Dundas…

Is a peer of the realm that wrote songs, scores & jingles.

Now he wrote fourscore – as some of us oldies may remember it was the original jingle for Channel 4.

    It went…

    doom… doom… Doom Doom

Anyway aul Lord David got Royalties every time it was played… dozens of times a day…

But here’s the rub, someone sued him, stating…

They’d wrote two of the notes…

    True…

    Hail Hail

  4. Aberdeen go on the mantlepiece at Poundland, alongside The Florida Cup……….whit…….whiddyyoumean they never won it….?

  5. If as looks likely sevco beat aberdeen tonight then that will be 3 times this season a reasonable claim on 2nd spot

  6. A whimpering Deek McKimbo meekly hands Scoddlands second team pennant over to his elders and betters at Haunshake Central, never again shall he aspire to such dizzying heights…

*looks like sevco dodged a bullet there

  8. Huge day tomorrow folks with the vote taking place in Holyrood on James Kelly’s bill to have the OBaF Act repealed. Please if you’ve not done so already, click on this link it’ll only take one minute.

Only after going two down did Aberdeen show any semblance of attacking.

A stewards inquiry on Mc.Innes wouldn’t be amiss.

  10. deja vu, sevco will get stronger and we twiddell our thumbs always the same no matter whos in charge

The two games back to back were unquestionably the strangest games I ever seen between two teams who apparently hate each other..

He completely changed systems to go to Ibrox, his team looked like they had never met each other before.

    Coincidence, I think not!!

Sevco look as if they are enjoying playing the game.

Not as much as they enjoy rigging the game.

Christie as anonymous as the rest of his lacklustre team mates.

Only in the last ten minutes did the cross the half way line with any sense of purpose , only to be denied by last ditch defending.

    Too little, too late.

The Huns are a busy team, who run around a lot and use the width of the park.

In fairness, you have to work hard to beat them, but they lack genuine class.

Watched guys full of desire in their team.

What makes you suspect it was rigged (or are you talking in general) ?

  15. glendalystonsils on

The dying team look to be getting stronger. The fight for second place seems to be more of a walkover than a fight.

We will have to ensure that they are a distant second.

That’s all fair comment. They flagged in the last 10 plus 6, lots of guys who have been out of things at their parent club. Aberdeen had 5 or 6 real chances during the period.

The Sevvies worked and their goalie and Tavernier pulled it out the fire.

Didn’t see any of their game tonight, so I wasn’t commenting on that game in particular.

I simply meant the way the game in Scotland is rigged in their favour.

Unless the Edinburgh clubs find consistancy, second place is a given.

hope not we play them both next

  20. Aren’t they level on points with the dons? Aberdeen can take care of clubs outwith us and them, Murty’s teams aren’t very consistent. Long way to go yet

Ah right, and that’s why Celtic supporters have to get behind every player at the club.

Some of us seem to forget that there are still a large part of institutions and individuals who hate you, me and the flag that binds us the Celtic.

  22. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    Paul,

I’m wondering what you mean by these comments:

“Brendan has significant funds to spend, but the last thing he needs is to load the squad with more of the same.”

So why since Brendan has arrived have we purchased (amongst others): Benyu, Hayes, De Vries and Gamboa; none of these players when purchased were going to be first team players. All are squad players. Doesn’t quite fit your narrative.

“We will do the right deals or no deal, like it, or, express mild frustration, followed by a cognitive alignment indicating acceptance of the inherent wisdom. Or just lump it.”

What is the inherent wisdom here? Our budget each year is calculated without treating champions league income as a given. Accordingly, when we make it to the champions league, the budget should be revised upwards (even marginally), notwithstanding that our progress in Europe this year into the Europa League and the unexpected income for Van Dijk should further add to our potential budget. Seemingly, our budget seems immune to any additional income we earn.

Celtic have a big summer transfer window ahead with uncertainty over Dembele, the players on loan (Edouard and Roberts) and the bhoys with 12 months left on their contracts (Armstrong and Boyata), not to mention any others. We should be preparing now for the champions league qualifiers. Failure to do so could be costly in more ways than one.
