Klimala and data-driven analysis

406

Zbyszek, our man in Poland, was surprised when Celtic signed Patryk Klimala from Jagiellonia Bialystok.  It is fair to say the subsequent lack of impact and opportunities bore out what he told me at the time.

Patryk arrived the month after we played a League Cup Final without a striker fit enough to start the game.  Lewis Morgan, a lighter-than-air winger, played the striker role until Odsonne Edouard’s arrival in the second half.  With the league title in the balance in January 2020, there would have been an over-eagerness to get a deal, any deal, over the line.  Which is why Patryk, hitherto plying his trade 33 miles from the Belarus border, came to work in Glasgow.

You and I have not seen enough about Patryk to proffer an informed opinion, his appearances have been fleeting, although there were signs of encouragement, in particular against Lille.  The most relevant fact is that he was unable to acquire a place in an underachieving Celtic team.  Getting our £3.5m investment back feels like an unlikely win.

Perhaps the most curious aspect of his transfer, due to complete shortly, is the buying club.  New York Red Bulls, the North American outpost of one of European football’s most data-driven club owners.  You can be sure Patryk featured heavily in key metric reports during his development years.  If Red Bull are buying, the data will suggest there is a player there; the same data almost certainly took him to Glasgow in the first place.

Separating data from noise is an analytical problem that cuts across disciplines.  It will be interesting to watch what happens to Patryk over the next few years, is he a data find or background noise?

At 6.00pm tomorrow can you ask your mate in NZ if we won?

    ———————————-

I’ll do that and post when I hear back so we can all make a few bucks as well. Bought DOGE at $0.04 and it hit $0.32 overnight.

  2. Sure it’s the best darn team in Scotland,

And the players all are grand,

    We support the Celtic,

As they are the finest in the land we love them,

We’ll be there to give the Bhoys a cheer

    When the league flag flies,

And it cheers us up when we know the Scottish Cup,

Is coming home to rest at Paradise.

There’s so much background noise surrounding some of our signings , I can hardly hear myself think .

  4. Personally I would have preferred if it was Griffiths that went.

But doubt if anyone would pay money for him

I’m not aware of Celtic having said anything about Howe. That’s why I had asked for a link.

I’m not even sure that Celtic could say anything very specific about a managerial appointment given that they need to comply with LSE rules.

If you can, try and get a hold of a book by Alexander Walker Nadell called Fight Old Age. Chapter 4 has a section on the rotator cuff and exercises that should help. Some of the copies I’ve seen online are stupidly expensive so if you can’t find a reasonably priced copy feel free to get my email address from Paul or one of the Admins and I’ll send you pictures of the relevant pages.

Getting any deal over the line only shows up how unfit for purpose the club was run.

  8. Does anyone have a link to anything Celtic have said about the possible appointment of Howe?

  10. We had 4 strikers ostensibly on our books this season. One of them did the following:

    1. Came back pre season fitter, stringer and faster.

    2. Played with commitment every time, closing down opposition defenders and letting them know they were in a game.

    3. Offered an opportunity to be a selfless foil for our languid, lonely-looking, lone striker superstar.

    We’re selling that guy?

I’d start him against sevco long before Griffiths or Ajeti.

  16. Still lots of talk around Fergal Harkin being named the DOF. I think the speculation about Howe with Hughes being part of the package is probably just that, unless Howe does sign and Hughes works under Harkin

Agreed – of the strikers we have on our books Eddy (who will leave) and Klimala were the two I would keep. Lille and Kennedy’s first game showed what we’d use him for – a strong running selfless hold-up player with a bit of pace. There’s two other strikers I’d want off-loaded.

  19. Paul 67,

  21. I’ll be totally amazed if we are getting a fee anywhere near 3.5m for Klimala.

If we are it’s great business but highly unlikely IMO.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Just another of my very rare posts now to let you all know that the Celtic

name despite those that would love to decry it is still massive down here

    in sunny Australia.

Haven’t a clue who the next manager will be? why not Dave Howe ? but

whoever, it won’t affect my or our CSC’s commitment to our club and our

    people.

Lots of division being spouted by many posters now and thats probably why

good Bhoys like Jobo, Corkcelt, Big Wavy, and many others have left, they

probably, like myself, can’t be arsed, arguing when all you want is a good chat

    about all things Celtic.

Just before I go and get my beauty sleep, I’d love to mention a young protege

of mine who signed for the Celtic ghirls just recently, Jacynta and if I could spell

her second name I’d deserve a medal, she trained with our under seventeen

bhoys a couple of years ago and I’d like to think she learned a lot about our clubs

ethos from my grandson and his mates who looked starstruck as she mesmerised

them not only by her looks but by her amazing ability.

Off now, big weekend ahead, our Celtic day on Sunday at the Dubliner, fully booked

as usual, who said the season has been shit? tell that to the Mornington rebels.

Good to see you Posting MELBOURNE MICK…stay safe.

  25. Turkeybhoy – From earlier, stay safe Amigo.

We were meant to be going to Turkey the first 2 weeks in July and to visit family who live out there as well but we moved it to next year.

Philbhoy – Good luck with the health issues. Try lifting copius amounts of Pints or cans of Tennents Lager with said arm as exercise. 🍻 Seriously good luck fella.

I would have punted Ajeti before Klimala also but did anyone show interest in Ajeti? Doubt it.

    D :)

  26. To allow Leigh Griffiths to go would be bad…but to do that and keep Ajeti would be even worse. A new manager might help to get Leigh back on track ?

Ajeti just isnt very good..sadly IMHO.

    HH

  27. Peter Lawwell is the current CEO and has not made any comment about Howe nor any other Manager. Nor is he likely to do so until a deal is agreed. There is the question of the stock Market as we are a PLC.

I think this is the right way to behave with a hostile media.

One of the problems with transfers is that other teams covet our best players, the ones we want to keep. They dont want players who are flops which we want out. So No bids for Ajeti or Griff. Eddy and Christie have reduced their transfer fees. Rogic and Bitton will be freed. Ajer Julien, and McGregor will fetch decent fees. N’tcham is unlikely to be signed by Marseille so will be back. Doubtful if anyone will want him. Boli, Barkas Shved and Bayo will be hard to shift

We dont want offers for Bain, Welsh, Taylor, Turnball, Forrest, Soro nor Johnston, Hazard, Henderson, Connell, also Doohan Montgomery, Hjede and some of the prospects.
