Klimala and data-driven analysis

406

Zbyszek, our man in Poland, was surprised when Celtic signed Patryk Klimala from Jagiellonia Bialystok.  It is fair to say the subsequent lack of impact and opportunities bore out what he told me at the time.

Patryk arrived the month after we played a League Cup Final without a striker fit enough to start the game.  Lewis Morgan, a lighter-than-air winger, played the striker role until Odsonne Edouard’s arrival in the second half.  With the league title in the balance in January 2020, there would have been an over-eagerness to get a deal, any deal, over the line.  Which is why Patryk, hitherto plying his trade 33 miles from the Belarus border, came to work in Glasgow.

You and I have not seen enough about Patryk to proffer an informed opinion, his appearances have been fleeting, although there were signs of encouragement, in particular against Lille.  The most relevant fact is that he was unable to acquire a place in an underachieving Celtic team.  Getting our £3.5m investment back feels like an unlikely win.

Perhaps the most curious aspect of his transfer, due to complete shortly, is the buying club.  New York Red Bulls, the North American outpost of one of European football’s most data-driven club owners.  You can be sure Patryk featured heavily in key metric reports during his development years.  If Red Bull are buying, the data will suggest there is a player there; the same data almost certainly took him to Glasgow in the first place.

Separating data from noise is an analytical problem that cuts across disciplines.  It will be interesting to watch what happens to Patryk over the next few years, is he a data find or background noise?

Don’t know if it’s a ‘Celtic’ thing, with her name…and her beauty and all, that makes it feel like such a loss

    Probably is though…..

Many of the Press concede Celtic have the far superior squad if Forrest is fit.

I hope Ryan Christie reads the papers and finds his on target fitba boots.

There’s a reckoning coming and der hun Press knows it.

If we keep 11 men on the park then the game will be remembered as the day Broony/Christie/Eddy or Turnbull pumped Sevco in the Scottish Cup for the 2nd time.

Well that’s one way of describing an imperialist and colonial enterprise.

Not sure it’s particularly accurate though.

Fun Fact: When Surgeon joined the SNP party policy was to leave the EEC (as it was then).

You can have the best squad around, but we still need to pick the team most likely to win a Cup game.

That is the question John Kennedy needs to answer.

Last time we missed out on 10 in a row, (which of course was then and now about breaking our own record) we still managed to win both Cups that season. And send Big Billy off on a high in his last game for the Bhoys.

Of course we can win the game on Sunday, if the players remember that they are playing for us…For Celtic….when they get there

*We can emulate this by winning 2 cups this season, both SC. BTW we won 3 cups that year, the Dryborough Cup as well with Paul Wilson scoring in all 3 Finals as well as the GC Final at the end of that season.

Der hun has won nothing, we lost everything. Unless the SFA’s beasts in uniform pull a stormer, JK will handle it, 0-3 with Forrest, 0-2 without.

The Darrien adventure was only part of the problem. Scotland’s main trading alliances were being blocked by your British (England and Wales) Royal Navy. Trade with Britain (England and Wales) was tariffed to such an extent our exports were uncompetitive in a marketplace where the sun never dawned.

Now that Little England has left the biggest market place in the world what would you rioting Unionists suggest for Scotland? Stick with your Majesty’s flutes or readapt?

The excellent Paul Delaney from Twitter

Many will watch the Royal funeral today. For others, their grief will be for loved ones sacrificed on the alter of Tory greed, corruption and Covid mismanagement. No pomp and ceremony to mark their deaths, just tears, heartache and sorrow. For they were just ‘ordinary’ people.

JK will know his team for tomorrow today will all be about running through the fine points of the game plan, for example not conceding a corner from the halfway line !! You can’t legislate for players’ unthinkable mistakes.

Will the JK game plan have a surprise element in it ? Rodgers on going down to 10 men at Ibrox went for broke a positive move putting an attacking player on rather than settling for a point and protecting that point fortune favoured the brave that day as Edouard scored the winner, I would be tempted today in a cup tie to change our team selection and tactics from what has been our settled side lately, however, I don’t think JK has that confidence and experience yet to do so, you can bet safely both teams will play with fairly predictable line ups and style of play

Please accept Scotland’s apologies for the behaviour of the Ulster Scots. You can take the bigot out of Scotland but you can’t……

Anyway, I wonder if, when Ireland is reunited (a form of unionism you support I assume), they will return to their ancestral homeland? Blood of our blood and bone of our bone as Scotland’s Parnell once called them.

    What do you think?

  19. Sentinel Celts wasn’t around when the SNP government introduced their Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012.
