Languishing in Paris

710

When watching Real Mardrid, Barcelona or Bayern Munich it is easy to be discouraged at the gap between where we are and the quarter finals of the Champions League, but despite the many hundreds of millions spent on both Paris St Germain and Chelsea, the standard of passing and decision making throughout their game last night was abysmal.   Despite their win, PSG were the worst offenders last night, even the Great One was poor.

There is now a real prospect that no English side will make it to the semi-final stage of either European tournament for the first time since 2003, when Liverpool were last to drop out, at the quarter finals stage of the Uefa Cup……..  You’re welcome.

What struck me most watching last night’s game was Sky TV’s Gary Neville pondering how long PSG’s star players would languish in such a poor league.  This is the French league we’re talking about here, not the Scottish Premiership, it’s Paris, not the ‘New East End’!

It’s easy to mock Neville but he asks an interesting question, will players always migrate to a higher-profile league?  If so, there are more clubs than just Celtic in need of structural change.

  1. Bt,

Condolences for your friend Jim. May he rest in peace.

I must admit I was surprised that Glasgow Council decided it was a good idea to blow up the Red Road flats at the same time as the opening of the Commonwealth Games. The BBC had a few folk on saying how good an idea it was. They almost had me convinced but in the cold light of day you have to ask what people in the likes of Pakistan or Mozambique will make of us blowing up so many homes.

I think the blowing up of the flats as part of the opening ceremony of the games is disgusting. I am not sure what it is meant to represent but it doesn’t sit well with me.

    Any Mac experts out there?

I have been getting pop up ads since yesterday whenever I refresh or open a new window.

I have Mackeeper for security and I have run a system scan and an antivirus check, removing 16 files that were said to have been contaminated. The problem is still there and I see my wife’s e mails have been sending out stuff too (she uses Facebook; I don’t).

Is there anything else I should do here?

    =========================================

Yes, stop watching Willie Thorne on it :-)

  4. Was watching the game last night and thinking how much did PSG pay for Cavani. He looked an average player. I have never fancied big Zlatan at the highest level. Two very poor teams. The difference being PSG can defend. Thiago Silva was best player on the park. The young guy in midfield Vanetti I think looks quite good. Apart from that very poor all round.

Just goes to show you can through heaps of money at so called top players and still be rank rotten. Or you can employ a good head coach, with a good team and scouting system to aid him and compete at the highest level. IMHO Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers have stolen the march in England. It might not work this season or next but I feel they are moving in the right direction. As are Celtic of course but at a different level and with different outcomes.

  5. Blowing up the flats as part of the entertainment at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony is probably just as bad a decision as building the flats was in the first place.

What I can’t wait to see is the people dressed up in Irn Bru and square sausage costumes. That should be a touch of class. :-)

Ironically the Red Road flats were known in the fire brigade as the Olympic Village, due to the diversity of the residents.

As someone who was held up at knifepoint by two gentlemen in one of the Red Rd flats I won’t be sorry to see them go. Knowing many folk who’ve lived in them I’m pretty sure they too will be happy to witness their destruction.

However, to have it as a part of the opening ceremony is quite simply one of the most nonsensical things I’ve ever heard!!!

Is the destruction of buildings a metaphor for how much sport has been destroyed over the last few years.

I think the usual firework display would have done.

    PS.

Surely the council or Sammy B won’t get a grant from the CG Fund for doing this!

  9. Gents – I suspect you are missing the point of the blowing up of the flats. Wont the theme of the opening ceremony being about Glasgow regenerating and moving on from its past perhaps?

I tend to agree with you, but I suppose it depends on the exact context that it’s done in, which nobody knows yet. It could be great but I suspect it will be totally naff.

  11. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    neg2,

I think that blowing up buildings will not equate with regeneration in many parts of the world

    More like death and destruction.

Not thought through , I’m afraid.

During the night of the Hurricane, back in ’68, there were stories of furniture moving within the top flats on the Red Road.

The PSG performance first half last night was very poor but I still think they are likely to make the final and possibly win it.

Also, I wouldn’t rule out Man U yet.

The morning after the 68 storm was some sight. Trees blown down all over the place in Castlemilk made it an adventure playground, and great fun for me and my mates.

  17. Blowing up anything as part of an opening ceremony simply confirms that councillors and politicians in general are eejts. And tasteless ones at that.
