League reconstruction will soon look like a fantasy

287

The bun fight in Scottish football, where Partick Thistle have taken counsel opinion and, along with other bottom of the table clubs, threaten legal action if the season is brought to a halt without them being saved from the drop, looks impossible to settle soon.

Hearts and Thistle hope for more than a commitment to discuss the league reconstruction change that will save them from the consequences of being so poor this season.  Both are set to go to court, if necessary, which, I suppose, is an alternative to using your superior financial muscle to outperform smaller clubs.  As things stand, the league will wait until it is safe, then resume, which may delay the start of next season.

There are various event horizons between now and then.  Without football, a cash crunch lies ahead for every club.  For some, that is likely to be a matter of weeks.  Most Scottish clubs will run out of money and available funding by summer.  Celtic can afford to sit tight, as can Partick Thistle – if Christine Weir is prepared to make good any shortfall.

Whatever prize money or loans the SPFL can issue is important but it will not change the bigger picture for the majority of clubs in the top flight.  There, only Celtic have the reserves or funders on the board, to see this crisis out.  The immediate worry for most is to survive three or four months without income, before they can issue season ticket renewals.

Clubs have yet to receive guidance on when attendance at sporting events will be permitted.  When that arrives, talk about league reconstruction, with more mouths to feed in the top flight and throughout, will seem like a fantasy.

There will be significantly less money in Scottish football going forward, we will be able to support fewer full time clubs and if resources are not concentrated within a smaller pool, their dilution through an expanded league will lead to many clubs withering on the vine.

We should sit tight and let the various losers squabble.

` THE SPFL have reportedly told clubs there will be no football played until mid-August.`

*Our local library posted they are closed so any books still out just to hold on to them, no sense in putting them in the after hours bin.

They also extended the return date on all books to mid April, last week they moved that to the end of May, its now been moved again to September 1.

They are part of the 2nd biggest municipality in the country, must know something we don’t.

Unfortunately I am banned for tearing Alex Rae a new arsehole over his EBT or his loan as he called it that he did not have to pay back…. Well it’s no a loan ya fud I told him.

Sevco probably quite happy for Dundee to say “yes” – let’s them get their dosh while maintaining their victim status and keep the nutters onboard.

TIM, I’ve thought since the start of this episode that that was the The Rangers’ stance, playing to their knuckle-draggers (still hoping to punt season books next season) by playing the victim card, but inwardly utterly crapping themselves if there was to any delay in the release of the prize money. If, as reported, Dundee have voted yes and the season is ‘finished’ as is, the The Rangers get to do both.

Going to pop over to Fascist Fascist to see the degree of foaming going on (and having a wee laugh at the same time).

  5. Premiership is not finished , they are waiting on a UEFA meeting on the 23rd, but hopeful that points per games played will decide, Budge involved in looking at League reconstruction when her club benefits is a clear conflict of interest, of course she will want to expand the leagues to save her skin and her club from relegation.

  6. If the hunz are serious about showing solidarity with hordes, they could always refuse to take the money! Somehow doubt it

    The devil in the detail.

” The SPFL board has also committed to consult on possible league restructuring in time for season 2020/21 around an expanded Premiership model and has appointed Hearts chair Ann Budge and Hamilton Academical chair Les Gray to jointly lead a reconstruction task force, bringing in other football figures to provide input and support. The SPFL executive will provide all possible services and support to make the work of the task force a success.”

What do those two minnows have to do with anything of significance ?

    Anyone smell a rodent ?

The get out clause for us ” POSSIBLE league restructuring “.

    A snidey ” prevent ten ” ploy .

Don`t go along with that , Celtic .

    Just don`t .

  8. Is it too early to kick off the 9 in a row party. I’m sitting here with a bottle of red wine & a tub of Pringles,

Ah feck it I’ll have a party anyway.

I imagine this years Cup Semis & Final will be held over till next year. Too much money at stake to ditch them

    .

So we are 2 games away from the QuadraFenian, & all kinds of History beckons next year. Winning 2 Scottish Cups in the one season, winning 10 in a row, 4 Domestic Titles in a Season and the Quintomagnifico.

Don’t get me started on Europe.

  10. The orange lodge has issued a statement saying that the marching season must be walked to a conclusion,

even if that is behind closed doors, while maintaining a social distance between members,

  11. I expect the SPFL will add new clear cut rules about early closure of season in case a similar situation arises in the future and avoids another ludicrous voting shambles

  12. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I wonder if the league reconstruction is a sop that will result in bigger parachute payment for Hearts and an extraordinary one-off consolation payment to teams that finished 2-4 in Championship?

  13. i think Celtic should ask for an advance on the league payments due to our Duraglit spend. Holding all those trophies takes some maintenance

  14. Tim Malone, I think you could be right on that one.

Amy change in the SPL will need a minimum 11-1 vote in favour.

Getting that is a huge ask their could be the type of sweetener you mentioned as a consolation in the event of the anticipated enlargement Proposal being voted down.

Not too worried about any possible league reconstruction myself personally. The present construct, that of the SPFL and the Scottish Premiership dates back only to season 2013-14, and it is still not clear to me as to why Celtic FC agreed to it in the first place. The first two titles (SPL) of the present run date back to 2011-12 and 2012-2013, and the last six under the present structure. The only real danger to us winning the nine or hopefully the ten will be how and when the games are to be played, a factor which could help justify a 16 team 32 game league. Only qualification to any reconstruction would be that, regardless of what happens, Hearts go down.

CELTIC MAC on 15TH APRIL 2020 7:38 PM

    The problem.

Only two games against the hun .

We are then reliant on ” others ” putting their heart and soul into defeating the huns.

Can we be confident about that ? Mmmm.

    Yes. Sounds like paranoia. Nevertheless.

Season 67/ 68. OK. Two points for a win.

Celtic were by far the better side but had to rely on the huns drawing away at Morton to win the league.

The huns lost the league without losing a game .

At the end of the day , one loss against the huns could lose us the league.

    No thanks.

can anyone remember celtic ciggies in 1960 cant recall them my mate says they were made by hal stewart of morton he says was a big pal of jock stein hail hail

Yes. It is so. Bob Kelly promoted them. In fact there was a promotional show in Greenock Town Hall involving, definitely, Celtic players and, I think, Rangers players. Bertie Peacock was there representing Celtic. This was just at the time when the link between smoking and lung cancer was getting a bit of publicity.

  20. Just announce us as Champions now and give the others their money and time for each to develop an honest survival plan.

  21. Reconstruction will fail… there is no way Sevco will vote for 14 team league with a split at 26 games and home and away for the top 7 , to make up 38 games.

rather they would prefer a top 16 , home and away 30 game sprint is there only chance … but reductions in games will see that option rejected by just about everyone

Still they are providing some badly needed entertainment at the moment….
