Legia less appealing, Man City under-grad

1542

Surprised we got two in yesterday, as Manchester City under-grad, Jason Denayer, signed for a year-long loan last night.  The 19-year-old has yet to play first team football so is likely to be considered as backup at Celtic, though reports are promising.

Not surprised that Legia Warsaw have lodged an appeal to Uefa to be re-instated into the Champions League, they have to try everything possible.  It has not been confirmed what ground Legia have appealed on, however, at the weekend, Polish FA chief exec, Zbigniew Boniek, suggested an appeal would be made on two grounds:

That only one member of the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body was at the hearing to made the decision, and

That Legia were not given the chance to make a submission to the Body.

There are 10 members of the Disciplinary Body and rules state that decisions require the attendance of at least three, unless the case is “urgent”, when a decision can be taken by one member.  To defend their process, Uefa need to insist that the circumstances were urgent, probably citing the Champions League play-off draw, which was due to take place two hours later.

While the Disciplinary Body allow submissions to be made prior to a hearing, Article 34 authorises the Body to undertake a hearing without submissions and “in the absence of one or all of the parties”.

In the unlikely event Legia won an appeal on procedural grounds, a subsequent hearing, perhaps with more Disciplinary Body members in attendance, would take place, and would inevitably reach the same conclusion.

Article 21, paragraph 2, of the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations state, “A match is declared forfeit if a player who has been suspended following a disciplinary decision participates in the match.”  There is no ambiguity or lateral for the Disciplinary Body to exercise a different reprimand.

Legia’s appeals can carry on all the way to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but Celtic will not be involved in any future issues.  NK Maribor represent a vastly, vastly, greater risk to their Champions League aspirations.

On a separate point, of all the things that concern me at the moment, one of them is not that RD has brought in (on loan with an option to buy) two players who play in creative/wide attacking roles. this has been an obvious area of weakness for us, especially as Forrest is so injury-prone, and we have been over-reliant on Kris to make things happen in the attacking third. If one of them turns out to be a solid team player who creates some chances and scores the odd goal, we will have improved our team.

And if neither of them makes it as a first team regular because Calum McG rises to the challenge and makes himself undroppable, then that will be even better for the team, for him, and for us.

So we’re either developing and giving him experience to return to City and challenge to get in their squad, or we’re being used as a shop window to sell one of their players!!

Either way, its not appealing to me.

Agree with you re. the loan system. Chelsea have made a mockery of it with their 30+ players out on loan last season. They should introduce a new rule limiting the number of players a club can loan out in the same way there’s a limit on the number of players you can loan in. I’d say 4 or 5 max. That would stop clubs like Chelsea and City hovering up young players from across the continent just to stop others getting them.

Same goes fir any young, cheap player who develops into a quality player.

The minute that Hull, Fulham, Southampton, Norwich etc get interested, off they go.

Face it, if any one if the top 30 teams in England want a player, then he won’t come to, or stay with us.

Getting to the last 16 of the CL was a miracle given the Scottish, English, Uefa financial situation.

We are in the world of miracles. All of you who are angry and express hatred towards our CEO…. You are angry because they deliver miracles but only on an occasional basis.

  14. What I find sad is that we put effort into winning the league so that we have the prospect of having a crack at the CL.

However, when we reach the qualifiers, we are nearly always ill prepared or ill equipped.

And, in this year’s case, we are seemingly shambolic. What is the point?

  15. What is the Stars on

Here is a revolutionary new strategy that we might try

    (1) Get a manager that can actually manage (and has demonstrated so at a serious level)

    (2) Allow that manager to nominate the players he needs/wants within the structures of a budget which has been outlined to him before he takes the job

    (3) Sign those players if possible or players of similar abilities if first choices not available

    (4) Start the season

    Ok lets try that

  16. James Forrest

Ok. Let’s not fall out but as a counter weight :

    1. There is no empirical evidence to back this up. Did Frazer Forster only start running though walls when he got his Celtic full time contract ? Of course not. It’s about the people and the culture.

    2. It’s a results game. Play the best players at your disposal regardless of their status. No room for emotion and certainly not with our win at all costs support.

    3. Maybe the manager believes all 3 of them are keepers ? Man City have just spent 30m + on a new centre half alongside Kompany, the club captain. Perhaps there is a string chance www can convince him to stay of he likes the proposition.

    Like yours, just opinions fella.

    What is the stars

that strategy is, for various reasons which are often discussed on here, not available to us.

btw, every club has a team of scouts who identify and recruit – the era of managers doing it all is long gone. they will get input, and have the final word (from a footballing perspective) but that’s it. Do you think Pellegrini, or Ancelloti scout and receruit for their respective clubs? I can tell you they do not.

  25. James Forrest is praying for The Unconquerable Oscar Knox on

    Jeg er Ronny Delia:

Sorry about that mate. I’d like to say that was a momentary stab of anger, but in truth I’ve been pissed off with all things Celtic for about a fortnight now.

I never expected a change of direction or strategy as a result of the Legia reprieve.

I half expected some sign of life, some indication that the board realised a point had been reached with that tie, and it was time for some signs of life.

That we then sold Forster – and yes, he wanted to go, but the timing of it absolutely stinks, and no-one will convince me it was necessary to do it this week – weakening the team even further, that we then went out and signed of yesterday’s targets, a guy who has already rejected us, on loan and added to that with a third loan signing for the manager who’s on the record as saying he doesn’t want loan players … it’s almost as if our “custodians” went out of their way to show how LITTLE they give a damn what we think.

For some people this is okay. Scotland is a wee country. We are a backwater league. We need to realise we can’t live with the big boys … yadayadayada ….

The next time we hear, from Celtic, how big a club we are, how special we are, I would ask that people take note of how we act.

My anger is interwoven with sheer bafflement, and I mean that sincerely, that some of our fans are content to live with this mediocrity.

It disheartens me, because I suspect that I might even be in the minority who’s deeply, deeply concerned by where we’re going. That worries me because if I am in the minority then there’s no stopping it, that we ARE heading towards watching Lee McCulloch with the SPL trophy, that a ten goal hammering in Europe is inevitable, that our reputation as a club with traditions, who’s name rings out, really is going to be obliterated and we’re going to be known as a provincial club obsessed with scurrying around the globe playing meaningless games for money, ruled by the balance sheet.

People ask me why I am not in favour of a move to the EPL, even if such a thing were possible or likely. I am not asking for us to try and compete with those clubs, because frankly I don’t want to compete with insanity. Fraser Forster for £10 million? That’s a no-brainer, any day, every day. I am not complaining about that as much as the timing, and in the knowledge that the money is not going back into the team.

I don’t see me returning to Celtic Park for years. It will take a dramatic realignment of where our club is going before that happens.

I was thinking last night of the Celtic Way, that wonderful avenue outside the ground where our past heroes are remembered.

You do realise, right, that the strategy does not allow for heroes? Victor Wanyama’s flag will never fly there, nor that of Gary Hooper or Fraser Forster. Henrik Larsson would have been sold in Martin O’Neill’s first season in charge.

We’re never going to have that again. Kris Commons may well be up there, if he’s not punted by the end of the current campaign, but after him …? Who?

Yeah, I’m pretty fed up mate.

  26. Gary 67

The hoovering up of young talent with real potential creates a scarcity.

Scarcity causes prices of lesser potential to rise. £3m for Ryan Gauld????

Presumably Celtic are paying part of the loaned player’s wages which brings him back into the affordable bracket, a bracket that would have allowed us to sign him in the first place had the scarcity created by hoovering not existed.

There is a phrase in Soccernimics – As oil is to the oil industry, so stupidity is to football”

The guy was nearly right – As oil is to the oil industry so lunacy/insanity is to football.

    What’s worse – it’s contagious.
