Lennon, master of sporting conflict, deserves Sunday

138

While these pages were full of “I hope we never play them” comments in the years immediately after 2012, Neil Lennon wanted his Celtic team to face Newco.  Neil foresaw what a well-organised Celtic machine would do before results like 5-1, 5-0, 4-0, 1-5 poured down on top of the Ibrox side.  He has waited over six years, but on Sunday, Celtic’s interim boss gets his chance.

A significant part of the reason Neil was so loved at Hibernian was because of his record in Edinburgh derbies, as well as against Celtic and Newco.  Hibs over-achieved in these games because Neil is a master of this kind of sporting conflict.  When there is a real edge to the occasion, there is no one better than Neil Lennon.

He will be counting down the hours until noon on Sunday.  The players will be more focussed and prepared than they have ever been, not one of them will be in any doubt of the outcome as they leave the tunnel.  They will be determined, full of the confidence of being at home, but most importantly, will know the boundaries they need to respect to deliver a great performance.

For all that he has gone through, Neil deserves this chance. I can’t wait to see him take it.

  1. ” Celtic v Rangers: How does Neil Lennon’s Old Firm record compare? ”

That was a BBC site Headline. A few of the 70 odd comments referred to the fact that ther is no Old Firm. Comments were shut after 7 hours. Hmm..

  2. ” As one noted American TV news presenter inquired as the indicative vote results came in: “Is there a word for something that has passed through farce and tragedy like nine times already?”

Here’s the kicker in that latest BBC Scotland nonsense:

“But how does his Old Firm record compare with those who preceded and succeeded him as Celtic manager over the last 19 years?”

Hard to believe that the same organisation once accurately stated back in June 2013:

“A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

  7. SFTB’s @ 1:36 PM,

Ok then, let’s wrap this up…

Brendan Rodgers had a number of offers while at Celtic. He turned them all down save the one in March for him and select members of his staff to go to Leicester City, this was agreed beforehand with the Celtic Board, who required substantial payment in compensation.

There wasn’t layers and layers of coaching staff involved – only four, despite briefings to the contrary. Also Leicester were not prepared to wait until the summer for BR and his team despite briefings to the contrary.

Now last summer the Chinese offered a substantial amount of money up front for BR and huge salary and resources for the squad to take a position with a Club. BR talked this over with the Celtic Executive who as by way of incentive for him to stay, offered to back BR in the transfer market with improved bonus payments.

The incentive was not as lucrative as the Chinese bid and was part cash and part shares, the shares being the more substantial part of the deal. Part of the condition was that Celtic qualify for the UCL and BR signs a contract giving Celtic substantial compensation if someone came in for BR and his staff.

    This was agreed…

BR kept his part of the deal…

But he was NOT backed in the transfer window as promised, Celtic failed to qualify for the UCL. Some six months later BR and his staff left and the Celtic Executive got their huge compensation payment.

In all of these dealings BR and his staff kept within protocol and above board, however person or persons unknown within the Celtic briefed against BR to make him look like the bad guy. Where it was in fact BR who had kept his side of the bargain.

    That’s about it isn’t it?

I’m not sure what led to the confusion regarding the Blogger, Paul67 nor James Forrest were ever in my thoughts in that regard.

HOLISTIC: Characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.

You may find it boastful and pretentious.

I practise Buddhism, it’s fundamental to the practise.

The fact is in Asia this approach is ubiquitous, Asia is the most populace part of the planet, so as humanity goes and may I say, backed up more and more by scientific proof, this philosophy is far from “out there”.

As far as leadership goes, our Chairman has been in position for eight and a half years now, through the Rangers scandal and the subsequent cover up, to the refusal to review and res 12 et al. Then letting slip the opportunities afforded to Celtic from being the only show in town.

What leadership has our Club Chairman shown in all of those years.!?

It’s he who gets an easy ride…

    Hail Hail

There may be similar concepts in Bhuddism (which I am hoping is one of the safer beliefs to criticise- well the statue of Bhudda does not suggest a life of self-denial) however the Western use of Holism and holistic came from a South African Philosopher and Boer General who believed in the segregation (not very holistic, that) of the races for most of his life.

Anyways- My holistic approach to beating the dead club is

    Bain

    Lustig Ajer Boyata Tierney

    McGregor Brown

    Forrest ??? Sinclair

    Edouard

Subs : Gordon, Benkovic Hayes, Henderson Weah Burke

My only doubt is who takes Tom Rogic’s place as the 10 in the absence of Christie and Ntcham. It could be tough to ask a youngster like Henderson or Johnston to play there in a (relatively) crunch game. It is not a great position for the speed merchants (Burke, Weah, or Hayes though Forrest makes half a fist of it).

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

  9. !!Bada Bing!! on

SFTB- I would start Burke instead of Sinclair, with Eddy wide left, those 2 can more theirback 4 about, Forrest has been really good but since winter break, been average for me,needs to turn up on Sunday.

  10. SFTB’s @ 7:32 PM,

“There may be similar concepts in Bhuddism (which I am hoping is one of the safer beliefs to criticise- well the statue of Bhudda does not suggest a life of self-denial)”

Well considering what the Protestants, Muslims, Jews etc get on this site Buddhists have had it easy.

As your comments show an ignorance of Buddhism and knowing that and knowing you from here I believe there is no malice in your mocking.

It doesn’t make it right though.

Buddha was for a long time an ascetic, there are many statues around India and beyond showing him emaciated. Later in life he preached the “middle way”.

There are many practices in Buddhism. My practice does not use statues or idols.

I’m not at all offended, it’s just some could be.

The No 10 role… well with the hurly burly of a Glasgow derby and no protection from the referee, it’s a tough one, but I’d go for Henderson myself, it’s a tough ask but I think the lhad is special.

    Hail Hail

  11. We have Euan Henderson as the spare truly ‘midfield type’ player, the rest Weah, Johnston, Burke, Hayes are either untested or not proven in the role. James Forrest trains tomorrow and Saturday, so reckon he’ll start, meaning Sinclair is the only player whose position in the likely starting eleven, is under threat.

Personally ( so it’s won’t happen ) I’d play Eddy where he started against Sevco with his winner in the 2-1

game at Ibrokes, bombing in from the left.

    And we only had ten men when he was unleashed that time, I think NFL will go;

    ………………….Bain…………………..

    Toljan….. Benkovic…. Boyata…..Tierney

    McGregor….Brown……Henderson

    Forrest……..Edouard……… Sinclair

  12. The main reason I’d prefer Neil to not be our manager again on a permanent basis is the huns game………………

He’s paid his dues, an’ done his bit for the cause. He’s suffered more than most and it’ll get worse again.

The sleekits in the meeja will undermine him probably picking at his mental health all the while Neil will use his trademark candour to straight-bat bent questions….from crooked trumpets.

  13. BP1 – politely say to the guy…….. Hall ya dick ma names Jim in Jack and victor style fae still game?

Hello again all you young rebels.

Now that one anaesthetic has wore off and the next one ( Guinness ) is

waning i’m getting those back to reality worries.

Does anyone else think that letting all those stickies into our park an

hour before the game starts is a good idea?

I mean will there be any amenities left when our bhoys arrive?

I’m thinking toilets, foodstalls, any part of the stadium that can be moved?

I’m picturing hundreds of angry ants picking up and taking away anything

of substance, looting is a better word.

Or do i just worry too much?

Think i’ll go for some more anaesthetic.

  16. Hi Mick

Glad you’ve recovered and full of Celtic Spirit ?

Agree – our board need to grow a pair, take a lead and ban them from our ground.

Set an agenda, and follow their statement- we operate and our strategy is as a stand alone club in Scotland

Right news coming on, more BR exit shit

Most people seeem to think that term refers to scottish people, and plays on the old stereotype of scots as miserly…

but, actually, it has nothing to do with Scotland….as close as I can remember, the term is nordic, and skatt was an old word for tax… so, it meant not having to pay tax…

    MIT

Beg to differ, having read a lot of Scottish history, John Prebble an Engerlander

i believe, the term Scot free derived from the time of the Jacobite rebellion

that whenever one of the convicted Scots got himself out of gaol the town crier

apparently went about whichever town it was ringing a bell and shouting.. Scot free.

Right or wrong it annoys me when i hear newscasters in Oz the U.S anywhere

    use it.

    But thats just me.

    H.H Mick

  24. MIT is correct – Scot free is a derivation of ‘tax free’ ‘ – not specifically Scottish
