Lustig, Samaras and problems after World Cup 98

1000

We’ll all be supporting Mikael Lustig and Georgios Samaras as Sweden and Greece attempt to qualify for the World Cup tonight but the prospect of Lustig, Samaras, Izaguirre, Ambrose, Forster and possibly van Dijk not having a break until July, days before the Champions League bandwagon starts rolling again, is unappetising.

Celtic contributed more players to the 1998 World Cup than any other team.  Perhaps as a consequence, we started the new season in third gear, unable to string two league wins together until thumping five goals past a now defunct outfit.  A Perfect Day.

Georgios, Mikael, Emilio and Efe are hugely important players to Celtic.  They are also players we have an excellent chance of retaining, which in some respects makes it even more important that they are ready for action early than those like Fraser, who until he signs his new contract we can be less sure of retaining.

Best of luck to Greece and Sweden tonight, but if your guys return home disappointed there will be compensations.

Ross County have won the respect of many, and rightly so, for building a successful football club from little more than sticky backed tape and empty washing up bottles, but one of their key achievers, manager Derek Adams, has to be one of the most ungracious people in the top fight game, a fact now being picked up in the wider media.

It is unfathomable if this trait is a fundamental aspect of the club’s success.  The clichéd football manager is an unapproachable tyrant but surely there’s more to it than that?

I’ve heard a good few footballers tell their tales of drama, they all have them, even the quiet ones, but it is an objective fact that Frank McAvennie has more stunning stories than anyone in the game.  I’ve heard him tell some publicly, and then listened to the really incredible stuff privately.

The Untold Truth with Frank McAvennie, is at Victoria’s Night Club this Saturday 23rd.  Doors open at 7pm for a three course meal, entertainment and Frankie recounting his stories.  There will also be a sporting auction and a Q&A session.  Book at www.franktalks.co.uk

    Good afternoon all.

Yesterday evening a few of us attended a meeting regarding the recent events in Amsterdam and the current plight of the 8 Celtic supporters who have been charged and bailed and the 2 who still remain in custody in Holland. The main purpose of the meeting was to make arrangements for a bucket collection which will help establish a legal defence fund and enable all those involved to have appropriate representation when their cases go to trial.

Eight of those charged, including Andy and Padraig who remain in prison, will appear in court on Thursday, while the other 2 will have to wait until January before their cases are held.

A Dutch lawyer has agreed to represent all of those charged and he will be flying to Glasgow today (Tuesday) to take statements and meet with those involved. Clearly, his expertise and skills will not come cheaply and consequently the idea of a bucket collection came about as a means of meeting these costs.

Celtic Football Club has been extremely helpful so far and indeed have granted permission for those involved to collect within the stadium itself, the first time that this has been allowed. However, for this to be a success it is essential that there are sufficient volunteers with buckets to gather money from those wishing to make donations…..and this is where you can help!

If you are able to give up a few hours of your time on Saturday up until kick off then I implore you to register your interest at Dambhoys8@yahoo.co.uk

All evidence so far, suggests that these were completely innocent Celtic supporters who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The purpose of the collection is to allow the Legal Defence Fund not to only give these bhoys the opportunity of a fair hearing but also to expose, where applicable any alleged brutality and negligence of the Dutch police and authorities.

  7. I see old dewy eyed Keevins is reporting in the rag today, that Scott Brown really has no place in the Scotland”Roll of Honor”much less the “Hall of Fame”The reason,”He has never played in a Scotland team who have done anything of note”Why he should pick on Broony, who would walk over hot coals to pull on the Scotland jersey, unlike some, should be apparent to all on here.

The sheer stupidity of this article,it seems is lost on Hugh. The great Scottish heroes of the past, according to Hugh, and the rest of the nostalgic MSM,the names they can roll of their tongue, with a sigh and a moist eye,the likes of which,we will never see again, the Laws,Baxters,Mc Kays,Whites,St Johns, won hee haw when wearing a Scotland strip.Qualified for nothing.

When the Scotland team, under WGS is starting to put results together, and the future for the national team is looking a darn site better than it has done for a long time, you would have to wonder why an alleged football journalist would print such a story, decrying the team captain.

Think we all know why.Did not really want to say anything about what this obnoxious creature writes, but could not let this go by without a comment.

Quite a few saying they would like to see Bobby Murdoch in our current team.

I never saw him in the flesh unfortunately.

My old man said he was the best midfielder he ever saw.

LiviBhoy, I was blessed with seeing the Mhan in action and I concur with your old man.

Perhaps more pertinently I came across Matt Thomson, a former Motherwell full back in those days, when I was coaching his boy at Eastercraigs. Anyway, we got talking about those days and he said the guy he hated (and most admired) in that Celtic team of super stars was not wee Jinky or Bobby Lennox, who often gave him a torrid time, it was Bobby Murdoch. He described the way he could turn in the tightest of areas and ping a ball right on to their toes as they screamed by him as the stuff of nightmares. To hear a fellow professional speak so highly of him spoke volumes.
