More worrying than the result

897

I know we had nothing up front, but Odsonne Edouard has looked more of a passenger in some games this season than Patryk Klimala and Moi Elyounoussi this afternoon.  The game was lost elsewhere.

Newco’s shape allowed them to dominate space whenever we had possession.  They were able to swiftly double up on Jeremie Frimpong and Diego Laxalt when the ball went wide, while they were compact enough in the middle of the field to keep Celtic from penetrating their final third.

Games are won and lost on mistakes and yet again we are talking about the defensive line at set pieces.  Connor Goldson’s ploy of standing offsite in the hope that a defender would break the line and play him on, was not subtle, but it was effective.  It was an excellent cross from the free kick (which wasn’t a free kick, but no excuses), Duffy was an enabler and Valarie Barkas could have done better.  Questions remain for both.

Culpability was less clear at the second goal, which was well worked.  With so many Celtic players in the box, you would expect one to get in the way of the drilled cross, but it fell to Goldson; teams who create chances get these breaks.  It was a deserved goal (again, no excuses, but the handball!).

The last time we dominated Newco was two years ago in a 1-0 win at Celtic Park when Olivier Ntcham controlled the game and scored the winner.  Stephen Gerrard learned from that day as Olivier has not had a sniff against them since.

Being ineffective up front and shaky at the back are worries enough, but the biggest concern is that we were unable to do anything to change the flow of the game.  An inability to control the any part of the game is more worrying than poor defending or not attacking.  It is more worrying than the result.

  1. It was suggested a few weeks back that some players were angling for a move away.

Other than running the transfer window down, have we solved any underlying issues?

I am concerned with a number of managerial considerations.

    Discipline, fitness, squad harmony, motivation.

Something appears to be rotten in the State of Dennistoun

Anybody concerned about Milan aren’t paying attention. I don’t care about Milan. Play the under age team for all I care.

I’m concerned. We’re underperforming in Europe and we need good performances there to provide some belief. Two home defeats in a row is something we could do without.

This site was a breath of fresh air when started

I’ve long lurked and watched the best posters leave since Paul took his position with BOD

    Think what you will

    —-

    listen

ive seen todays defeat coming for weeks.

ive said many times on here this season how pish we have been playing

and that we hadnt played anyone apart from ferencvaros who were only an average side and we lost

so in your language, i did smell the coffee.

even before i went to sleep, let alone wake up to it

but saying that phrase comes across as insulting fellow posters, as if you are better than them

there is just no need for it

    as for paul joining BOD

no idea who BOD is or why it matters on this site

BOD was a cartoon i watched when i was a wean. dont think paul was in it tho

    Very true.

But personally, I’d rather a quality manager who will probably be off to bigger and better things than a manager who’s lucky to be here and will never manage a club half as big as us again.

  5. A FIVER FOR Your THOUGHTS-I’ll give you a tenner if you say something meaningful instead of bitching 🤷‍♀️😉

  6. Big Wavy

We’re under performing everywhere. We need to prioritise our number one goal – the league. Protect what left of the squad for Pittodrie and forget about Europa vanity.

  7. BIG WAVY

    Agreed.

ALL Celtic games matter. The last thing the team and the mood around the club needs after losing to our biggest rivals is a thumping at home in Europe.

We shall not be moved from where?

    2nd place?

    Our slumber?

    Complacency?

    Behind our sofas watching?

  9. Really down after today,I have seldom seen a Celtic team with less fight.

Is there some kind of power struggle going on,The Board,The Manager, and the players? far as I can see NL has been supported, but seems incapable of getting the format right,or a response ,the result being that we have regressed to their level and as far as an effective unit goes,we are poorer.

Earlier poster mentioned the start of this being the McGinn saga, which was a contributory factor in BR doing the dirty on us.

Then we had the NL appointment, but his second in command chosen for him.

In fairness to NL,as he tried to build a team,he has had Tierney turn into a sneak and depart, then of course he put his trust in Fraser Forster a man who was on his uppers ( Career wise ) until we saved him initially, agreed to come back then pulled out, with never a word of apology, losing us Craig Gordon as his release had been agreed ,thinking FF on his way back.

That’s a tough backdrop,if you don’t have someone strong beside you,and he does not.

Strachan has had his period, how about Sutton, not afraid to debate a decision or Keane,,somebody to give the guy a hand,as this 10 is going the wrong way.

PS. If Eddie turns up for Euro game fit and ready,Lights, camera, action, look at me,give him a code for the Passbook.

  11. On Frimpong being poor today ,I’m Sure told him to keep tabs on Baracis from running at young Welsh who isn’t a experienced left back,I could be wrong but that’s what I seen today and that’s the reason Frimpong was poor ,again all the blame on Lennon for Frimpong not pla his natural game, and if Eddie Howe is available I would like to think that Celtic sound him out,or John Terry just a thought.

I want same as you success on pitch

We’re not really getting it despite our massive financial advantage

    Why?

    Are you happy with that?

    TIMBHOY2

Frimpong is one of my favourite players but was dreadful today , couldn’t find a team mate with a pass and continually made wrong decisions.

  14. Today – for some of our team it was ‘we cannot be arsed moving’

Attitude and commitment cascade through a group – the leadership of a group can influence said cascading

  15. Its likely that we will go on a multiple game winning streak domestically because the rest of the league is poor, and even more so than normal due to COVID.

With Sevco beefing up their squad- their bench today was stronger that I could ever remember- it’s very unlikely than they will implode for the 3rd year running.

It therefore is coming down to the Glasgow derbies. Now, can anyone see us with Neil at the helm correcting course and overcoming them?

I can’t. Our players must have zero confidence for these games given how the last 3 have played out (even if we did get lucky with the cup final).

I would get rid of Lenny and try and get in Eddie Howe. Hell, I’d take MON and Roy Keane double act as at least you know we will be better organised for Ibrox.

  16. It’s a team game. Man for man I believe Celtic have a better squad of players (it’s certainly more expensive), but for three games on the trot against Rangers II, the better team by a street have been our opponents.

They have better shape, better movement, better tempo, crisper passing and greater desire. It’s natural to look at our deficiencies and forget that our opponents are now a good team. They have demonstrated that countless times in Europe. They now have belief and conviction. It’s time to stop kidding ourselves. We are sleepwalking into a disaster here if we dismiss them lightly as Paul did this week. They may be selling platers but they are well trained and they know their jobs. Our thoroughbreds are running a bit green.

I am not going to call for the managers head. He earned the job and his overall record has been good, but I hope that he will engage in a good deal of introspection after today and ask himself what is the problem and am I a part of it? The Board backed him heavily and cannot be blamed for today. Today would not have happened in the manner that it did on BR’s watch in my view. I’m very concerned by Neil’s body language. Is it transmitting onto the pitch? He is constantly seen slumped in a comfy chair with his arms folded. By contrast, a Klopp or a Guardiola are perpetual motion…the coaching never stops.

We should have more gears with this squad but something is badly wrong when we are repeatedly pedestrian looking against this lot. Everyone needs to get mud on their shirt in these games but we look like peacocks caught up in a vulture wake.

  17. JinkyRedstar

I don’t believe that. “They wanted it more than us” is another of those tropes that means nothing either but helps us fans think it’s about mindsets, cowardice, hiding, etc.

We were out thought and when the Hail Marys or the spurt of talent doesn;t produce we have nothing in reserve. Absolutely nothing.

The huns press as a team, attack and defend in a system. It’s simple and effective and we have no answer to it. As Steve Clarke showed previously, a reasonably well-deployed team system can take you far in this league.

Like you I see us in serious decline- from a position of absolute dominance, and with huge financial advantage, we should NOT, be losing 2 consecutive games at home to an 8 year old club.

In saying this Neil Francis Lennon, was given adequate backing in the summer to re-create a gap

Unfortunately, I am watching a Celtic team, with no clear structure on how we play, what was our tactics today ?

no clear strategy on how we build from strength

I could go on, but I am seriously hurting in what I see

  21. As always the solutions lye with those at the very top.

But Celtic is a huge Ocean liner.

Turning such a large ship takes time.

To turn the Celtic ship around in enough time to stop this catastrophic failure requires immediate acceptance and willingness.

I doubt Dermot Desmond and his lapdog puppet , Lawell , have the desire.

What a huge advantage they have wasted.

Peter Lawell and Dermot deserve to forever be known as the failures who blew the 10.

Unless they pay attention and react quickly to the signals of the iceberg that is right in front of them .

The unsinkable ship can easily be sunk by the arrogance of complacency and lack of desire.

This Ocean loner has been heading for the iceberg from the day we decide not to close the deal on McMinn .

From the day Lawell decided to prove to Rodgers , that there was only one Capo di tutti I capi.

Leadership comes from the very top .

    It takes instinct .

Time to be instinctive , and incisive Dermot .

but who the fek is BOD?

    —-

Bod is a BBC1 children’s television programme first shown in 1975, with thirteen episodes, based on four original Bod books by Joanne and Michael Cole. It is a cel animated cartoon series narrated by John Le Mesurier and Maggie Henderson with music by Derek Griffiths and produced by David Yates

  26. There’s apparently players in our squad with an eye on a move – I’ve no idea who they think will be interested in them given recent displays.

Today should be a year zero event – a hard reboot where almost every position is up for grabs.

I’ve little faith in Lennon, he had ten months to right the wrong of last December and delivered that today. I just hope our individual talents get us over the line because we’ve no strategy, no system and no idea how to change a game.

We’ve a huge two and half months ahead of us before Ibrox. A lot of Celtic careers and legacies are on the line.
