MSPs feeding on distress

446

“The Club reiterates its sincere sympathy, regret and sorrow for those affected.”  “The Club is very sorry that these events took place.”

So read a statement by Celtic on historic child abuse allegations concerning Celtic Boys Club, issued on 26 February, before two consecutive items on Channel 4 News, in the latter of which, Alex Thomson said, “To date, not a single football club has issued a public apology.”

The broadcast actually carried the Celtic statement a few moments later.  That feels unnecessarily crass, Alex.  Several clubs have failed to issue a public apology for historic child abuse, only one in Scotland that I am aware of, issued an apology.

Celtic are not, as accused by Channel 4, silent on the matter.  They have now issued four public statements.

Celtic have been or are in dialogue with police, lawyers and victims.  As far as I am aware, they are the only Scottish club to have paid compensation to victims – this is all on record, Alex, payments made to victims – on record.  On-going dialogue – on record.  Public apologies – on record.  They are just not speaking to you, which is not actually that important.

What Channel 4 News authorised was vile attempts to reduce child abuse to football banter by Adam Tomkins, Tory MSP, who after Copenhagen’s win Tweeted, “Not the best week for Celtic, then….. #SorryNotSorry”

When it was put to James Dornan, SNP MSP, that Celtic and Celtic Boys Club were not linked, he responded, “It’s a complete nonsense, all the evidence suggests… that the Boys Club and the Football Club were intrinsically linked.”

Where is this complete nonsense coming from Mr Dornan, because here is what Celtic wrote: “although Celtic Football Club is a separate organisation, we take these extremely seriously because of the historic contacts between the two organisations?”

MSPs are feeding on distress.

What happened is vile and caused untold damage to the lives of many victims.  No amount of money will properly compensate for what happened, but sensitivity and diligence is required.  So too is responsible and accurate reporting.

    Regrettably, it says it in Andy Walker’s Rule Book. Walker is a disgrace to the game every time he comes out with this type of statement.

    Just back from Mass. The old shake hands as a sign of peace is gone from the menu & The Holy Water fonts have been emptied.

    ==============================================================================

    ” The practice of the Church has been to empty the Holy Water fonts on the days of the Sacred Triduum in preparation of the blessing of the water at the Easter Vigil, and it corresponds to those days on which the Eucharist is not celebrated (i.e., Good Friday and Holy Saturday). ”

    As far as the ” Sign of Peace ” is concerned , there is a significant move to return to some of the practices of the Tridentine Mass before ” innovations ” like the Sign of Peace came into being.

  9. Until I see them ,having a few games for the 1st team,Soro,Klimala,I will keep any comments to myself.As far as I am aware,they were not “Projects”.They were playing regularly for their teams,in leagues comparable to the SPL.In my opinion,Lenny ,at the moment,is sticking with what he knows.Eddy,Griff,up front present midfield.Maybe when it’s done and dusted,we will see these guys getting game time.

    Someone mentioned earlier,”Klimala”,never heard of him before.Apart from the big names in Europe,I could say that about 95% of players.Huns play,Leverkusen.Dont know one of their players.

  17. The Seethen Gerrard experiment is teetering on the brink, his delayed statement was made in case he resigned live on TV due to his inbred seethingness and the latest Hearts defeat.His arrogant inability to overcome underestimating Scottish clubs in domestic games will become his ultimate downfall whether its in this 48 hours or not, doesn’t mean its not inevitable, just the same.

    He has failed for the second year in a row, his words were about him and his eventual decision will take him back to where he’s more comfortable across the border, fact is he’s f8cked it and he knows it. I imagined he’ll be talked into remaining for the Leverkeusen bash, but if he has any sense left, he’ll realised after that he shouldn’t have taken the blue pound in the first place.

    Bang average, or anonymous English Championship players run through their side, shackling the club to mediocrity for Gerrard the next manager, and the next, you can’t start a club from scratch and win the League, inside a decade it has never happened, and never will.

    Pound to a penny it’s either a false alarm or just a social media invention.

    I was told of another suspected case elsewhere in Scotland on Friday by someone who works in the NHS. Doubtless many others have heard similar stories all over the place.

    I suspect than a lot of respiratory cases are being logged as potential corona virus until it’s clear they’re not, and rumours grow in the telling.

    Having said that it’s likely that a lot of measures will now be taken to contain the spread, and football will not escape. Some big calls coming up for from UEFA about cancelling games or playing them behind closed doors.

    Nae luck, huns.

    @legday huddleboard

  23. The _Huddle, yeah, I get that as well while the VPN is on.

    For some reason Celtic appear to also be top of the league for clamping down on fans being able to watch the games, you can pick up most teams games on Streams but our games seem to be blocked or go down more than any out there. Annoying but kind of understand with the illegal streams but to go to the trouble of banning customers from buying Celtic TV through VPN’s. Surely they are meeting their requirements by not letting people buy the games that are obviously in the UK, is there really a requirement or contractual obligation to establish if the customer is actually outside the UK or using a VPN?

    I want to watch all the games, but I live well over 500 miles away from Glasgow, so travel to see them is just not possible, it is incredibly frustrating that I can’t just pay to see them all. I can’t think of any other product that makes itself so difficult for the consumer to obtain.

  24. Didn’t see the Huns game but, by all accounts, it was the manner of the defeat that has worried young Gessard.

    No fight or heart is a lot more worrying that just poor tactics

    This is the reason for his ‘need to think about where he goes from here’ comment, if the players don’t care anymore there is very little he can do about it

    Anyway, two hours to kick off, mon the Hoops

    It’s interesting that the only games the huns turn up for are European ties or against Celtic.

    It’s as if Gerrard’s arrogance has infected the players and they see everything else as beneath them.
