Need to find edge to match United

935

Dundee United and Celtic will both have their minds on longer term outcomes than tomorrow’s Premiership game at Tannadice.  For Neil Lennon, it will surely be another opportunity to expose some of his development players to the rigors of first team action.  For Jackie McNamara this is a test before arguably their biggest game of the season, next week’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

United are six points off the pace in the neck-and-neck battle between Aberdeen and Motherwell in re Best of the Rest race but face both these teams at home before the end of the season.  United’s potentially bigger challenge are the home and away games against the champions.  Only the top three are guaranteed European football, so the potential of European revenue, added to the prize more differential (circa £100k per place) will sharpen minds.

For Celtic, the challenge will be to find the edge their opponents will have for tomorrow.  I’d look to Liam Henderson, and maybe a couple of his former development squad team mates for this.

We’re well accustomed the nationalist and xenophobic excesses of the UK media but Germany appears shocked at the two biggest selling UK dailies use of the word “schwein” to describe Bastian Schweinsteiger.  Anyone who grew up during the decades when war movies dominated our TVs will know the racial context loaded onto this particular term, as it was used in Germany in the 30s and 40s.

Bayern’s ban on the Mirror and Sun is an appropriate rebuff, safe in the knowledge that no Bayern fans will continue to consume news about their club from either newspaper.

  1. The Battered Bunnet on

Lots of great slow wingers. John Robertson and Peter Weir to name but two.

Pace is great, provided you can do something with it. Give me great delivery every time though.

I too was annoyed at Liam Miller for moving when he did. Never hit the big time he thought he would.

As of people angry because we nursed him through injury, I can’t agree. He got injured playing for us so it’s only right.

  3. Delivery in wide positions is always about the quality of the delivery however do not forget those attacking, Henke, Sutton and Hartson could turn what initially looked a poor cross into a good one

Modern game has seen the demise of wingers, bit of a luxury in the team, its really down to how the space is engineered in wide areas, as long as the full back, midfielder or forward in that space can deliver a quality cross, Barry Robson has no pace, get him some space in a wide area and he can deliver

    Off to work

  4. Good evening friends.

Back to the annoying commentators, my own personal gripe is with “that one came straight from the training ground”. As opposed to where, Asda car park?

  5. Those of you old enough to remember the 1965 Scottish Cup Final will no doubt recall with great fondness the winning goal that day, which signified the arrival of Celtic in the modern era of football and kick started our first generation of domination.

We have received a great feature on that goal – scored by Billy McNeill – and this will be included in the new edition of CQN Magazine. It is a great read and it has been written by John Cole.

I remembered that we had featured this Cup Final before, in an earlier edition of CQN Magazine. Indeed so impressed were we with the contribution at that time that we turned the feature into a little booklet. The feature came from a CQNer who in his youth returned from the game and drew his memories of the game. These hadn’t been seen for years by anyone until we published these schoolboy memories in CQN. We also asked Martin 42 to write a Paul67 style State of the Club review – which is also a great read. It is on the back page.

Have a look, it is special.

I have now discussed this matter with our Head of Governance and can confirm that the membership you enquire about is held in the name of Rangers FC. That membership is held by the corporate entity The Rangers Football Club Limited which was, in 2012, transferred this membership by the then named The Rangers Football Club PLC (In Administration) pursuant to and in accordance with Article 14 of the Scottish FA’s Articles of Association. The Rangers Football Club limited is in turn owned by Rangers International Football Club PLC which is listed on the London Stock Exchange through and AIM Listing.

    Kind regards

  9. Back in the day, I played firstly as a winger and then as a full back. My crossing was probably my only real asset. Always tried as a winger to get to the byline and chip the ball back into the box. Don’t see this tactic being used effectively or even regularly at Celtic Park these days. I find Izzaguirre especially poor. Too often makes a complete hames of it. I always felt Guppy was the best of his time at Celtic Park.

  21. Sad to hear of the passing of Margo MacDonald she was 1 of the few independent voices even when she was an SNP MSP & that didn’t suit Salmond.

She supported my first Mason reg petition & was moved to make way for Duncan Hamilton, a Mason, and adviser to Salmond who scuppered it then chucked parliament and went to the Scotsman then Faculty of Advocates. A fat son of the manse.

She was head and shoulders above the duffers who are there now.

  22. Annoying commentators; Andy (insert expletive) Gray: “he hit that too well.”

Or various “his preferred left/right foot” presumably selected from his armoury of assorted left/right feet of varying preference.

Regards TSFM post ……. so what this hun is saying is that he , being typical of type , gives not a toss about the creditors that were stiffed or the fact that he is willing to accept his football club died in this context as being perfectly acceptable but has taken umbridge at being cast adrift on the same boat …… ? that , more than anything I have digested in all of this facade speaks volumes for those scumbags ……….. sickening …..!!!!!!!
