Oft-triangulated Georgios

763

It’s good to be back.  A power outage at our datacentre on Saturday caused servers to crash and subsequent database problems.  Our thanks to Andrew in Belfast for his invaluable help, again…

Trying hard to ignore speculation of various players coming our way, plenty of time for that later in the month, although I will add a note of caution.  The fact that a journalist gets confirmation from Neil Lennon that he is able to sign a £6m player does not constitute a promise to do so.  It’s little more than bait, for those who still read such sources.

I’ve heard nothing but good things over the years about Georgios Samaras.  He is a player who flourishes on confidence, and support, and does so most often at the highest level.  In Europe he is Celtic’s out-ball, a player capable of bringing others into the game, turning defence into attack.  It is at this rarefied atmosphere that his goal-scoring has also been most effective.  Ironically his style is less effective in the SPFL, where Celtic spend far less time 80 yards from goal.

A considerable reason for the low return in the Champions League this season was that everyone knew how reliant we’d become on Georgios.  He was heavily marked; by the time the ball got to his feet, three opponents triangulated around him.

It’s no surprise he has offers from Spain, and no doubt elsewhere, to consider. If he leaves I hope his lasting memories will be cheers of support, not his harsher experiences.

Definition of poor IT planning: datacentres who host their Status page at their own datacentre. “We’re down, but you can’t read this, because we’re down.”

Doubt anybody would say we need to spend more than 5 million on a striker, any striker.

It seems to me that we the Celtic support have no idea about any dialogue between Celtic and the SFA regarding the Rangers getting entry to the lower leagues before any other club. Now it just so happens that over the longer term it would suit the club financialy to turn a blind eye knowing in the future a weaker the Rangers would eventualy get promoted to the SPL which would in financial terms be good for Celtic. Now again in my opinion there was nothing wrong in putting resolution 12 forward to seek clarification from the club as what the truth of Celtics involvement or non- involvement in the 5 way agreement was.Where it has fallen apart in my opinion was that those taking the motion forward at the meeting agreed to side line the resolution in favour of having further meetings on the matter which may or may not take place. They then came back from the meeting saying they had been told things that made them feel side lining the motion was the correct thing to do but they couldnt tell us what that information was but there would be further meetings. Now I do not know any of the individuals who took the motion to the AGM so I trust they acted in good faith. However,it is my opinion they should have let the board side line resolution 12 and came back to the support and informed them of that and looked for a new way to get the information unfortunately they took in my opinion the wrong option in entering a secret agreement with the board and if you say it is not that what do you think it is ? Tony Donnely is one of the few people trying to find out but to many bloggers stick together and say the resolution will eventualy get a clear cut answer like Tony I think you are kidding each other.H.H.

Perhaps it is time for Samaras to move on. He can be infuriating but will certainly go with our sincere thanks and best wishes. I’ll never forget his demolition job on the huns in that New Year game at Ibrox that we went into as massive underdogs with a patched up team. He was magnificent.

    Good post on big Georgios.

I’ve been saying for weeks now it could be worth offering a decent contract to the big man as his performances for Greece have been very good. Their group opponents are Japan, the Ivory Coast and Colombia, not exactly top drawer. Any good performance on this stage will be noted and make him worth more than his wages if he wanted a move.

He might not be as effective in the domestic games but he is vastly experienced in Europe. How much would we have to pay to get a replacement or for a guy who Barcelona put 3 men on!

  14. sammi was excellant in europe last season. along with big vic and frazer he took us through to the next level.

the big man gets celtic.. as did shaun maloney, aiden mcgeady and probably more than anyone Niall mcginn… sadly thats not enough or we would have a strike force of hamiltontim and corkcelt. fine celts from what iv read but wouldnt do the job on the pitch

sammi with the rest wasnt great in europe this year, but its his poor performances week in week out in the SPL that suggest to me the 15/30k a week needed to keep him would be better spent elsewhere.

our line up has become boring and our play predictable at times. we need a clear out of players. zaluska, jamsey, sammi, derk, bangura should all be let go in my eyes.

mulgrew no where near midfield, back up centre half.

scott brown no where near centre mid, right side midfielder is where he is best.

youth players need to be given proper chance.. fringe players the same or else sold for whatever we can get for them .

Res 12 has put the board in a position they maybes didn’t want to be, maybes not, only they know.

What it will do, is show the support one way or another, if the board have been complicit with the sfa, whatever transpires, the support will find out one way or another.

If the sfa have issued a licence on the say so of the huns, they, the sfa are fecked, maybe the club are grateful for Res 12. I am of the opinion that they would have shot it down had they not wanted it aired, they didn’t, that gives me hope.

    HH

  17. Kitalba

No. I think they knew they could not stop it and had they publically opposed it would have been portrayed as spiteful and vengeful given it consigned Rangers to the SFL.

I think they made the right move saying nothing on a matter on which the rest of Scottish football had made their intentions clear.

  18. Resolution 12.

A summary to date (medtim interpretation)

1.A number of genuine Celtic supporters we of the view that the awarding of a UEFA licence to rfc in 2011 was highly questionable and may well have resulted in an unfair loss to Celtic Football Club,it’s board,it’s shareholders and it’s fans.

2.So much so,they organised a resolution to have the matter discussed at the Celtic AGM.Well done to them

3.Initially,Celtic’s stance was to oppose the resolution. However, when presented with the detail of the resolution considered it worthy of further investigation in conjunction with those who took it forward. Congratulations to the board for doing this.

4.The board, while willing to take the concerns forward to the SFA,asked that the requisitioners treat the matter with sensitivity and confidence.A wise move and well done to the board for this and to the guys from here who agreed to maintain those confidences requested of them by the board.

5.Some time has elapsed since initial meetings and an update on next steps has been published.Again, well done to the board (who presumably ok’d this) and to the guys for keeping us in the loop.

    So,what do we have here?

Celtic’s Board working in conjunction with informed, committed Celtic fans to jointly take forward a matter of mutual concern.

Celtic board working WITH Celtic fans.Terrific.

Have I got any of the pertinent facts wrong here?

If not,one is entitled to wonder what manner of Celtic fan would find this all so objectionable

  19. 67Heaven:

In my case,Grace of Go or otherwise,it was a toss of a coin!

But I do get the point you are making.

IMO,Celtic should have stated that civil disorder had nothing to do with them.

However, very time a Celtic supporter was seriously assaulted or worse, had the huns been refused a parachute it would have been painted as the club’s fault.

    Because they had been warned.

Would you have that on your conscience? Nor me.

But I’ll put my neck on the line and say that that is very close to what happened.

Based on the current RFC market cap of £21.8M we could just about buy them with last year’s CL money.

Now, that is actually very funny. :-)

Question is though – what would we do with them once we’d bought them? It’d be like acquiring some kind of shameful relic – a shrunken head from the far flung reaches of the Empire. I mean – would you actually put it out on display these days? Perhaps, after all, you would – as a reminder and lesson to all future generations who would scratch their heads and ask “How could a civilised society ever have allowed such a thing?”. Concluding, “Thank goodness for progress!”.

The Exiled Tim FTD5. Im not sure your right that we will find out or exactly and how long that will take and the longer it takes the board to give a clear answer the more dubious it all seems. Why could the board not give a clear answer on resolution 12 do you know ? Do any of the people who put forward resolution 12 at the AGM know ? To me they either agreed to turn a blind eye to the Rangers entering the lower leagues or they were give faite acompli. Something does not sit well in the whole subject I dont know the answer but in my opinion resolution 12 was a good chance to find out wasted. H.H.
