Penalty records, Clement on precipice

192

Newco’s remarkable run of penalty kicks, given and not received, has been covered far better than I have elsewhere, so I will not dig into the main issue today.  What we need to concern ourselves with it that penalty kicks is one of their main sources of wins in domestic football.

This is a jeopardy Celtic will have to prepare for on Sunday.  Any time they have or challenge for possession inside our box is an opportunity to win a spot kick.  They will try.  Maintaining a defensive line outside the box hugely reduces Newco’s threat by a significant margin.

Their win over Hibernian on Saturday prevented a third straight home defeat (Motherwell and Benfica were the previous two).  That steadied the nerves for a side who had not won without the benefit of a two-man advantage or a penalty kick (they received one and missed against Hibs) since February.

Pundits can be heard saying this is the most important derby in a which feels curious to Celtic fans.  We’ll let the Newco/Oldco confusion slip for now.  The other lot are feeling it more than we are because Clement is on a precipice between gaining a valuable advantage late in the season or seeing his reputation go the way it did at Monaco.

Their fans feel this, while they worry about the return of Callum McGregor, who alongside Kyogo, they respect more than any Celtic player in recent times.  The supreme confidence Celtic faced at Ibrox in September has been replaced by a faux bravado.  Five minutes of good Celtic possession and that will switch to pressure on the home side.

  1. In his book, The Story of the Celtic: 1888-1938, Willie Maley, manager of the club from at the time of the tragedy, wrote:

“Among the galaxy of talented goalkeepers whom Celtic have had, the late lamented John Thomson was the greatest. A Fifeshire friend recommended him to the Club. We watched him play. We were impressed so much that we signed him when he was still in his teens. That was in 1926. Next year he became our regular goalkeeper, and was soon regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the country.

I play at Arbroath which, although near the sea, has no problems with erosion. I play Montose occasionally and in the 17 years ( !!) I have lived here, I have noticed really big differences at Montrose.

My worry re the Mibs is that they may overcompensate for us on Sunday and save their counter“balancing “ worst for the game at Celtic Park …the net result being their desired outcome 🤔

  5. My feelings for Sunday are still for the 1-1 draw but I am now edging towards a 2-1 victory for us.

#A young lad named John Thomson,

From the west of Fife he came,

    To play for Glasgow Celtic,

And to build himself a name.

#On the fifth day of September,

‘gainst the Rangers club he played,

From defeat he saved the Celtic,

Ah but what a price he paid.

#The ball rolled from the centre,

Young John ran out and dived,

The ball rolled by; young John lay still,

For his club this hero died.

#I took a trip to Parkhead,

    To the dear old Paradise,

And as the players came out,

Sure the tears fell from my eyes

#For a famous face was missing,

From the green and white brigade,

And they told me Johnny Thomson,

His last game he had played.

    #Farewell my darling Johnny,

Prince of players we must part,

No more we’ll stand and cheer you,

On the slopes of Celtic Park.

#Now the fans they all are silent,

As they travel near and far,

No more they’ll cheer John Thomson,

    Our bright and shining star.

#So come all you Glasgow Celtic,

Stand up and play the game,

For between your posts there stands a ghost,

    Johnny Thomson is his name.#

Arbroath!! I forgot – some moment to forget where you were from considering the blog name chat 😂

Yes the footage was interesting. 7 metres in a year is a lot. They seem to be ploughing money into combating it but these schemes aren’t always successful.

  10. Bada: heard he is fit to play. Didn’t play last week as he was one yellow card away from a suspension.

Some years back the BBC prog. ‘Coast’ devoted part of an episode to Montrose and its’ post ice age history. It was affected more than just about any other part of the East Coast of Scotland (as we later came to be known) by The Storrega Slide a Tsunami which originated off the west coast of Norway over 8000 years ago and impacted both sides of the North Sea. Doggerbank was virtually wiped out, though there are still relics of the structures which supported the population back in the day. It was estimated that the North Sea travelled more than twenty miles inland around the Montrose area, and explains its’ unique topography to this day. As I understand it this added to the Montrose coast line, which is distinct from the inland geology. Whether that makes the area more likely to be affected by rising seas and coastal erosion I do not know, but it looks like that is already happening.

Or in other words, what goes around comes around…

    Four!!!

    I hope you’re right Almore.

Who are our leaders without Calmac?

I’d go Taylor, Hart, CCV, maybe AJ- but none drive the team on against them as Callum does.

  14. Majestic Hartson on

    Celtic Mac, interesting.

The report said the ground was basically sand all the way to the town centre so they were worried that the erosion would keep going.

Though if the town centre is anything like most other town centres I’ve seen in the central belt/west coast the sea might be doing us a favour…

  15. Majestic Hartson on

It’s an interesting science the fight against coastal erosion and our fight against it. Lots of the man made engineering solutions just no match for nature.

A news report from down south recently showed a community who has spent 250k building up some defences that were basically useless by the time it was built. The locals has spent the money themselves too.

I’m down in Ayr and for a few years you’d dump your old Christmas tree down the beach and they would become sand dunes. This seems to the naked eye to be successful but it’s not the huge, house falling into thr sea, erosion seen elsewhere.

An eye-catching visual did the rounds about ten years ago? … showing the British isles if the ice melted fully.

Apocalyptic stuff to generate headlines but the premise was sound enough.

A future Britain looked like current day Denmark.

PS – and this is straight up by the way – when it happens Ibrox will submerge a good few decades BEFORE Celtic Park.

Drat. That’s another thing they’ll beat us to.
