Re-orientating our expectations

236

The disappointment online and among supporters in general since Tuesday’s defeat in Rotterdam has been tangible.  That’s an indication of just how hopeful we had become, despite extenuating circumstances and an away track record that should have prepared us for much worse.

Frustrations were shared by the squad, who know they let an opportunity slip.  For me, a reversal was always on the cards.  The game came too soon, with a mixture of players who made their debut just days before and ended with our seventh choice (arguably eighth) central defender stepping up.

We need games and results like that.  There is little to learn from wins over Dundee; even the victory at Ibrox can only inform to an extent.  You learn more from defeats in places like Rotterdam and Bodo than in a season of home Premiership games.

It should also ground you and me.  When Celtic win just-so-many-trophies it becomes difficult not to re-orientate our expectations that the current era is normal.  The CQN demographic suggests most of us have lived through the barren 90s and many of us were there during the 50s and early 60s, but even we get dragged into despair by the odd draw.  What chance the kids?

Burnley78 offered up the mystery scenario, and you dismissed the idea of increasing the SPFL to 18 teams (1.03pm). I put you both in the frame, but not necessarily for the same reasons.

Some group as well, Ajax and Marseille

  3. Brighton found out that playing in Europe can bring different challenges than beating Manchester United in the EPL.

They wont find it any easier in Athens.

do you really believe that we tried to sign Moussa given the fall out with BR first time round ? surely you are at it ?

  5. Hello again all you young rebels

i take it that “you” must mean the fans cos “the powers that be/management/team” have learned jack sh*t from where I’m sitting or more likely seem happy with our approach to euro football in any given year.

and the last time Real Betis were in Glasgow, the score was ???

  9. Brighton are a brilliantly run football club, with an outstanding scouting system, and football department.

Here’s a thought, at the next shareholders meeting, stand up and address Peter (liewell), explain to him his shortcomings, you might even want to have a smiley face when doing so, then tell him how he is to blame for Celtic not doing as well in Europe as you would expect and also give him suggestions as to how you would remedy things. You are a shareholder, aren’t you David?

  11. “Brighton’s highest finish in the 2022–23 Premier League qualified them for European football for the first time”

Flavor of the month? Who knows

  12. CELTIC40ME- keep on enjoying mediocre embarrassing nonsense in European football, and the Lawwell Dynasty, but stay a point ahead of the huns and all is good for you .Wake up and take your head out the sand.

  13. All Lawwells shenanigan’s and failures over the years and he is now back as chairman.

The football side will deteriorate as witnessed in the summer. When Brendan leaves I wonder if he has an aunt or uncle that could manage the Team.

He has his old firm model back.

    David66 — agree.

  14. To take things back to the leader Brighton seem to be a well run club who are happy with their lot

Expectations are pretty low compared to ours in a similar environment. They know their place in the food chain.

  15. CELTIC40ME- look at the way and vision that Brighton and Brentford have been built, long before the EPL money.

  16. !!BADA BING!! on 21ST SEPTEMBER 2023 11:01 PM

I think we should aim higher than a club who just lost their first European game ever at home to a Greek team.

  17. !!BADA BING!! on 21ST SEPTEMBER 2023 11:05 PM

Good for them. They’ll never be as successful as our team

  18. over the past years since Seville, would we rather have had all those trebles or 2 euro finals ? personally, i’d take the quadruple treble but its still feckin depressin watchin the tic in europe sometimes.

  19. celtic40me

wonder if brighton will go on to sign their keeper like we did when papped out by the Greeks ?

  20. Brighton and Brentford haven’t won a single trophy between them in about two hundred years of existence

They’re small clubs that are run to stay in the prem, their ambition doesn’t stretch beyond that.

Fair play to Benfield and the guy at Brighton, smart businessmen, but where will they be in ten years time?

  21. !!BADA BING!! on 21ST SEPTEMBER 2023 11:12 PM

CELTIC40ME- seriously? Stop living in the past, and take the blinkers off…..but I really doubt it

We won a treble 5 months ago. Brighton and Brentford haven’t won a trophy in 200 years.

  22. celtic40me

    some would say..

big club that is run to win the prem

    ambition doesnt stretch beyond that…
