‘Really robust offer’ euphemism

416

“Really robust offer” is apparently a euphemism for “Can’t believe they would pay that much”, following the transfer of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen.  The player is still only 20, with several development years ahead, but I doubt any of us set his valuation in this bracket.

At times this season I referred to Jeremie as our MVP (after his demolition of Hibs in September) and lamented the lack of end product comparable to Kristofer Ajer, when the adaptable central defender plays right back.

The failure to get crosses into the box by full backs on both wings, at the level Kris can apparently achieve, has been one of Celtic’s critical failures this season.  Come what may in the summer, we would have attempted to recruit an improvement, with or without Jeremie, who remains more potential than actual.

There is a major rebuilding job ahead, but with only the Scottish Cup a practical target this season, Neil Lennon is unlikely to see much of the reported £11.5m (before Man City’s cut) this week.

Good luck to you, Jeremie.

Loved the way we whipped the ball around last night.

It’s more a sense of relief

PL’s tenure will be remembered by whoever controls the rhetoric of history

    Now about NL ………..

  2. I’m happy to see Peter Lawwell go for two reasons.

    1. The pressure of living the lie will be taken off him. It has visibly taken its toll.

    2. Whilst one of his mistakes was accepting the 5WA the big one was not explaining why it was necessary to do so.

Make no mistake about it, Rangers foolish financial policy put Celtic in particular but every other club in SPL at the end of a gun.

Conditions should have been set like domestic FFP before Sevco were given a foothold in our game.

That failure and others to address other governance issues has hamstrung Celtic.

When Bankier said at AGM that Lawwell had acted in the Company’s interest that no longer stands the test of time.

As long as what was in the Company’s interest was inseparable from Lawwells interest Res12 was always up against a barrier.

That will have gone and perhaps, fingers crossed, Celtic will engage with the SFA on non application of rules and campaign for domestic FFP and a change to the way referees are managed.

If the new guy embarks on some review of operations I hope one lesson to be learned is dont mess with the support in a much more transparent world.

Involve them, they are as smart as The Board are and CST are the right show in town to start the process.

  3. Does this signal change?

    1. What is the remit of the new CEO

    2. What is his package…

    a. Basic

    b. Bonus KPIs

    3. Are there other new hires in the immediate pipeline? e.g. DoF

Sounds like to me that this season has been written off by the board and they are focused solely on organisational change, not playing success.

Lots more changes to come over the medium term but don’t expect it to translate into quick wins on the park

  4. Well Peter Lawwell has certainly been a good and faithful servant right to the end.

The issue has always been just who or what he has been serving.

I just hope that in his retirement he gets to see Celtic reach the heights they are capable of.

  7. Bhoy From The Boyne on

People will measure success of Lawwell in different ways.

Some will point to 9iar and healthy financial position of club pre covid.

I personally don’t measure success in terms of 9iar when our greatest challengers were missing representation 5 of those 9 seasons.

I measure our success on the below:

    1) Did we overhaul our entire football operations structure from youth level right through first team with appointment of a of performance/sporting/director of football, sports science and analytics dept as well as introduce a proper international scouting network to maximise our advantage for once a credible challenge re-emerges?

    2) Have we maximised our free run at Champions league qualification 2012-2020 to our financial benefit to support objective #1.

    3) Based on success of objectives #1 & #2, what are our prospects for dominating domestically this next decade 2020-2029 to ensure we maximise European revenues essential for growth of the club and brand success?

I would say Lawwell has failed on all 3 objectives.

Lawwell highlighted we would lose 5m a season upon Rangers liquidation. And there lies the problem, PL was unable to see beyond the short term reduction in revenue from loss of blue pound. He wasn’t able to see the long term revenue gains available in CL success and restructure the entire football division to maximise our chances.

Some say its a well run club….others would say Celtic under PL were too conservative and failed to grasp the opportunities available post 2012. PL was the wrong person to lead Celtic upon Rangers demise.

We are now destined to be stuck in an arms race once again and for many years to come with the incarnation of Sevco Rangers.

    And that depresses me.

The spew thats coming out of some peoples mouth on here is pretty hunnish if you ask me

If he had followed our early desires to chase after the tax dodgers we would be in a much worse position that we are now… 4 quadruple trebles!!!!…. Just remember that when you are denigrating someone who has worked their arse off for 17 years to deliver the success that we didn’t have previously.

  10. So ends the tenure of the most highly paid employee in our history and I for one am very glad.

A shocking state of affairs when our CEo was taking out between 2 and 3% of our turnover while telling us at every opportunity of the requirement to live within our means.

For context, United’s Ed Woodward is paid £3m (unsure of bonus on top) but if paid the same % of turnover as Peter would have been taking out roughly £12m.

He assumed his role in September 2003 and (excluding that season) we have not won a European knockout game since.

Peter’s performance looked great when measure against domestic teams with a fraction of a budget. Not so great when compared to European competitors on a similar footing.

  11. Auldheid

I’m hoping that with Lawwell going that the res 12/11 issues may be looked at in a different light by the board.

If McKay wants to be seen to do right by the fans then this would be the correct way to start.

  12. Bhoy From The Boyne on

If Lawwell’s legacy teaches the Celtic support anything, then it should be to ensure us supporters never tolerate one man having so much power and influence within the club ever again……….and the grotesque wealth he gained from being allowed to do so.

  13. Peter Lawwell

Seventeen years with successes and failures.

Does that deserve some of the comments made on here today?

Maybe even worse are those posts belittling Paul 67 in such a juvenile, nasty fashion.

  14. My point is that I don’t think many who express their dissatisfaction will ever agree with the Celtic FC CEO whomever it is as the club(a plc) will never be run the way you would like. Once you accept that the easier it becomes 🤣

  15. @ GIVEHIMTHEMONEYPETERCSC on 29TH JANUARY 2021 10:08 AM

Funny how all the trebles during PL’s tenure started when BR arrived at the club and very quickly ceased when he left.

Neil was lucky to inherit a strong team, benefit from the standards set by BR and spend circa £40m in 3 transfer window (has any Celtic manager spent that much in such a short period of time?).

Still, less than 18 months after BR left the wheels fell off; quelle surpirse.

Before BR arrived we had a turnover of £50m, an empty top tier and enjoyed a 6-1 thumping from the Polish giants, Legia.

Shortly after BR departed we are about to see a crash in season ticket sales (which may be averted by ditching our CEO and his manager of choice) and are back to being on the receiving end of thumping by European royalty, this time Czech giants, Sparta Prague.

PL should thank God every night that BR arrived and made him look good. He managed to get around £10m out of the BR tenure and the short-lived legacy he left.

` If McKay wants to be seen to do right by the fans…`

If our new CEO wants to do that, then I would think he is not the right man for the job.

I would hope that what he does IS seen in a positive light by the support but I would not want currying favour to be something he sees as a quality.

Still waiting on that piece from him to criticise his master on his handling of the 5WA, same club same titles, & the silver bullet and I’ll fire it comment?

  20. @HOT SMOKED on 29TH JANUARY 2021 10:21 AM

He’s the highest paid employee in our history. His wage rose 100s% during his tenure. We had a domestic hegemony for many of his years in charge.

When considering his successes and failures (excluding the corruption and governance issues we stayed silent on), you need to look at it objectively against the factual backdrop.

  21. Domestic success and ‘great european nights’…. Is that what this once proud football club have been reduced to.

Lets get some more ‘great european nights’ everyone.?That is the limit of our scope.

We used to judge ourselves on european success or at least european ambition.

The champions league would clearly be difficult to get to the latter stages. But the europa league?..really are we that far removed from the players and shakers?.

  22. GivehimthemoneyPeterCSC on

    I hear you rolling stone howevvvah;

You cant say everything bad = Lawell

    Everything good = someone else

That’s not how modern businesses work… it has to be a team/board combined effort

All the managers that worked under Lawell understood their role and none of them seemed to complain.

The Rangers fans hate him …that probably tells you that you should like him at least a little… I lived through through the previous incumbents so he is definitely an improvement… Could he have been better- yes

Could he have done more yes..Did he deserve his wage level -probably not… but do any of the players this season or in general?

I’m sure res 11/12 issues will have been discussed with the new CEO and Desmond and Peter will have ‘briefed’ him on the way forward .

  25. For all the Lawwellites on here, have a peek at Kerrydale St and the huddleboard on the reaction to Lawwell ‘being resigned’ in the same way that Warburton ‘was resigned’ at sevco.

I think there may be a few isolation parties going on well into the night.

On his being resigned, I remember Brian Quinn and John Reid announcing their resignations at AGMs.

Lawwell had every opportunity to tell everyone at the AGM only last month to tell everyone he was going.

    He didn’t.

It would have given the vast majority of Celtic fans some pre Xmas cheer.

All of a sudden though, he has announced this.

It gives me great satisfaction to think that he was sacked, but was given the chance to pen his ‘resignation’ letter.

  26. Lambert I prefer when folk form their own opinions rather than regurgitating others’ for populist backing. Makes for healthier debate.

We are an eclectic support. But it’s selfish to think everyone should follow your version of Celtic.

  27. Lambert 14… Eh????… McKay will be so far removed from Res 12…… It’ll be a wonder if he’s even heard of it.!!!!……..i follow loads of celtic you tubers… It never ever gets mentioned!!!…. They only care about things like … Beating the huns.. Winning trophys… Not humiliated in Europe…. That may not be palatable.. But its true….. I was thinking about our supps club….. 95 %. Probably haven’t even heard of Res 12……. Now this isn’t my views… If I won the lottery tomorrow I’d fund whatever was needed….. But I’m not naive enough to expect it would get lots of backing…. Sometimes we need to be in the real world!!

  28. glendalystonsils on

Don’t feel too sorry for Peter , I’m sure a big job at EUFA awaits , although I doubt his salary will be quite as impressive . Should have enough put by to keep the driveway heated though .

  29. Bankier on Lawwell

“With Peter’s departure, we must also recognise the huge role he has played in promoting Celtic’s interests at a European football level, particularly through his positions on the European Club Association Board and the most senior UEFA committees. He was elected to these posts entirely on merit, and his work and efforts in this area have been of great benefit, both to Celtic and Scottish football in general.”

    —————————————————————————————————————————————————–

This shows up Lawwell in an even worse light.

He had first hand contacts in UEFA and yet done nothing to further res 12, although, now knowing how much he was involved, that isn’t surprising.

With his UEFA role he certainly could have pushed for FFP and refereeing impartiality in this country.
