Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

    This one’s topical

Theoretically the pope can resign but as he is the Supreme Pontiff there is no one qualified to accept his resignation….where does that leave us now?

This is correct. It’s his decision. And if he changes his mind before February 28 no one will be able to argue with him.

I see God’s Own County of Ayrshire-he’s a keen golfer apparently, though even he can’t hit a one-iron-is getting it in the neck from the various sophisticates on here.

    Again….

And that despite the absence once more of the expert on such matters,DBBIA.

Well, read it and weep folks-and not just cos it’s from The Sun. It seems there ARE worse places……

  3. 25 million bibles. A ripe cranberry bounces seven times. Juve study referees. :-)

If as expected our Italian amici go further in the Champions League I think that referees will be watching them VERY closely.

Hopefully our team will be ready for the upcoming league matches.

Interesting. Out for a curry with Mrs LB tomorrow in Dalry. Dodging Jambo’s but it’s a deal I picked up a while ago for Mumbai Mansion which is two courses each for £9. I checked the menu and you can’t get many dishes for £9 or under. Looks a great deal. Brownie points in the bag tomorrow!

    So there are TWO vacancies?

To which one do you think I’m best suited?

I was asking after you the other day. Good to see you are still in fine fettle ( my assessment is based entirely on the unchanging nature of your humour). Do you intend attending any games?

    1-The opposition were cheating.

We usually get a delivery on a Saturday night, however, the restaurant has recently been taken over.

The service is diabolical and the food not great so we might need to venture a bit more now.

Yes. I’ll be up next week and will be in the pub afterwards with sons numbers 1 and 2 while wife and a brace of daughters go shopping. (We’re up for my mother’s 80th. I don’t usually insist that they shop wherever Celtic is playing)

  12. Jungle Jim – Xenophobia wouldn’t exist if Johnny Foreigner didn’t insist on being un-British and jabbering away in foreign all the time.

  16. philvisreturns,

In 1294, Pope Celestine V, only five months after his election, issued a solemn decree declaring it permissible for a pope to resign – and then did so. The pope could resign because the pope said it was ok.

Philvis, thanks for answering that for me. It has been a question that has tormented my troubled psyche for many years. I will now be able to sleep soundly, tonight, for the first time this millennium.

Damn you Disney, damn you to hell. BTW when he wakes from his cryonic coffin he’s going to be surprised to find out that the huns died and beat him in the returning to life stakes, albeit as zombies.

  18. corrib04 is Neil Lennon on

On reflection I think the reasons why we lost are quite clear.

I have no love for Juve but on this occasion they did their homework on us (and the ref) and out foxed us. No one cheated. The ref officiated in his usual manner it seems.

Lenny (God love him) made the wrong call in playing Ambrose.

KC should be dropped for Utd game for airing his views on a team mate. If he has a problem with Ambrose being jet lagged he should have been blaming Neil in the press and not Ambrose.

Now we have Neil,Efe and KC cribbing in the press. This looks very unprofessional and unsporting. We are better than this.

We were good but not good enough. Childish to blame anyone else but our club for the defeat.

I think we will regroup and win in Turin but will go out.

Though what worked for me was getting a job o night-shift. Never had a problem since……

  20. Gordon_J – I should be more specific.

There are advantages in being a supreme ruler – you get to set all of the rules

That’s not how the Church works. The Pope is not a theocratic absolute monarch. His job is more about upholding the rules than changing them.

The Pope could, in theory, decide tomorrow to tell us to drop all this Jesus stuff and worship Findus incarnate instead. But that wouldn’t become “the rules”, because it contradicts the doctrines of the Church. Just as a senior judge couldn’t just declare that France is illegal and make it the law of the land.

So, yes, he may resign if he wants to. But the rules of the Church are not a mere expression of the Pope’s whim. (thumbsup)
