Season for points to be dropped in unlikely places

751

Yesterday’s result at Ibrox gave some welcome encouragement but it would be wrong to read too much into it.  Rangers still have the kind of lead that would have Celtic thoroughly confident of a league win and, lest we forget, St Johnstone collected all three points from Celtic Park already this season.

The win at Inverness was much more important.  The Highlanders are bottom of the league but that is a false position.  Two points separate Hibs, Dunfermline, Aberdeen and Inverness, while Kilmarnock, who shipped six goals to Inverness at home two weeks ago, are only a further two points away.  Even with 10 men Inverness remained well organised yesterday, don’t be surprised if they move ahead of the four teams above them in the weeks to come.

The league is remarkably tight from fourth place St Johnstone to bottom Inverness, where fewer points separate the teams than split Celtic and Rangers. Don’t, therefore, be surprised if points are dropped in the most unlikely places.

I have read some pish on here but to suggest the founders of our club went about touching the forelock to our Protestant oppressors takes the biscuit…

I’m sorry, did someone say that?

The incident that caused most fascination last season was not players kicking a ball, it was Lennon going for Ally McCoist on the touchline.

See Lenny has still lost his Christian name. Here was ma thing McCoist had insulted Lenny but why not invent the story you want. I despair of Scottish media.

So few choose to? im not speaking for the ones who choose not to fly it. Not all Celtic fans support ROI Ernie, actually people like Paul McStay, Tommy Burns, Jock Stein, Billy McNeill, Jimmy Johnstone, Danny McGrain, etc etc etc. I’m pretty sure these guys would have rather flown the Saltire. Maybe I’m wrong?

We are not all the same. Some people are proud of Their Country.

Anywho it’s not an arguement, I have the right to wear my Saltire Just as you have the right to wear you Tri Colours. I would love to see them both flown with pride at Celtic Park. HH

I never asked for qualification or mitigation, just culpibility.

It could, but it could also pay for a lot of doctors, nurses, police officers, teachers, new roads etc.

The Orcs haven’t paid their taxes, but there’s no telling what the govt would have done with that money of they’d paid it. It’s a similar argument to, “I don’t want my taxes paying for Catholic schools.” You get no say in what your taxes pay for, you just pay them (or not in The Horribles’ case) and the govt spend them as they see fit.

Anyway, I condemn them utterly for not paying their taxes.

Happy to clarify I fully support Celtic’s Irish origins. Never at any time have I made a comment against our Irish origins. If I had I am sure you would be able to point to the links.

I choose the highlight the Scottish nature of our club, as some are not happy about about that and seek to undermine same.

  16. I have been going to celtic games almost every week since 1988, when I was 14. I sung the whole pro IRA song book everyweek. I am 37 now and if I’m honest i cringe when i hear stuff like oh ah up the ra, its not pandering to the establishment to to cut out the ra chants, we have plenty songs we can sing without that stuff needing to appear. Back when i was 14 i hadnt a clue about irish nationalism/republicanism, only stuff i was spoonfed from older guys on the supporters bus and like a sponge was only to willing to absorb what i was told. People bang on about celtic playing in the EPL etc, well how would they view IRA songs being sung in their grounds down there? think we all know the answer to that.

‘Try reading The Story of Celtic by Gerald McNee, Celtic: A Century With Honour by Brian Wilson, or <Dreams and Songs to Sing by Tom Campbell and Pat Woods.

I’m sure I won’t need to point you in the direction of the appropriate chapters.'

    I'm afraid you will.

Because reading the first paragrapgh of Chapter One of Dreams and Songs to Sing suggests that the idea that the name was chosen as some kind of hands across the waters PR exercise is a myth.

"Celtic, as the new club was called in accordance with brother Walfrid's wishes, became identified by the sporting newspapers as an Irish club, although some historians have detected in the choice of name an attempt to link Ireland (the native land) and Scotland (the adopted country). The Scottish Referee, however, would describe Celtic as 'the shamrock representatives', while a rival paper (Scottish Sport) headlined a match report of a later Celtic v Queen's Park encounter as 'Scot v Celt'. The latter newspaper described Queen's Park as 'the premier club in Scotland' and Celtic as 'the best combination of Irishmen that has ever been raised in Scotland, knitted together by an unquenchable desire to do honour to the Emerald Isle, from whence they sprang."

The authors go on to further undermine the notion you propse.

So it's odd that you quote the book as supporting, or being the basis for, your belief.

There's a lot of misunderstandings about why and how Celtic were founded and the reason for the name is just one of them.

Authors putting forward assumptions as if they are facts doesn't help.

  18. My father started going to Celtic games in the early 60’s. He’s forever telling stories of the rough ferry crossings from the north of Ireland and how Celtic were pretty awful at the time (soon to become great) Although he does talk fondly of how the Celtic support would proudly sing “faith of our fathers” maybe one for the green brigade to bring back to paradise. only if it doesn’t offend of course.

  19. Serge (10) Tommy Burns on

There was a discussion at work today regarding atmospheres & songs. A Newcastle fan said his own support were very loud but have very little songs. He said the best away support he had heard was the Celtic support at the Shearer testimonial. A testimonial??? Doesnt say much for the EPL clubs supporters does it. Says everything about ours though.

I am very proud of a lot of the things britain has done, I am ashemed of a lot of things they have done.

I dont think I’ve ever heard or advocated on here, that people want british soldiers to die fighting overseas, in most cases if young men and women dont want to fight overseas, their only choice is not to join the armed forces. The fact that they are fighting in unjust wars is the responsibility of the govt.

So with that in mind, why are Celtic supporters having to defend accusation of anti britishness when in fact Celtic and its supporters are not responsible for making successive british govt’s decide where cuts need to be made to make up for the lost revenue. Every choice has its consequences, choosing to withold that revenue does not give anyone the right to pontificate on the possibilities of it distribution. But you can be damn sure warmongers look after their warriors unless there are serious lckof resources.

  28. BhoyCillian,

I don’t remember “Faith of our Fathers” being sung but I do remember “Hail Glorious St Patrick”. I also remember, rightly, being told by Miss Brogan, a veritable legend in St Michael’s, which is literally a stone’s throw from the Ground, that we shouldn’t sing it the way they do over there, pointing to the Park. Thank God, we no longer sing hymns, even to Henrik, at Celtic Park. We are not a Catholic Club.

There are many reasons why the Celtic support is demonised, and you know as much as anyone else what those reasons are.

Among them is the fact that Rangers have diddled the tax man out of £50m. That is money the tax man will never get. So placing negative focus on our club prevents the media from criticising the Huns … at least I think that is part of their logic.
