Signing players on and off strategy

778

Bobby Collins left Celtic in 1958 after nine years’ service.  He’d won the Cup, the Double, the Coronation Cup, and, of course, the 1957 League Cup Final – Hampden in the Sun, Celtic 7, Rangers 1.

He went on to have a great career at Everton and to make a transformational contribution to Leeds United, but he will forever be a team mate of Sean Fallon, Willie Fernie, Bertie Peacock, Neil Mochan and Charles Patrick Tully.  Our thoughts go to his family and friends today.

Over the last year or so we’ve asked the question, how many appearances a player needs to make in a well-scouted league to allow an agile club to discover him, before the hoards arrive and price-away any value in him?

Victor Wanyama made 50 appearances in Belgium before we nabbed him but he was knocking back substantially improved contracts from Celtic after only 30 games (which is a different point); England had already taken notice.  Virgil van Dijk made 62 appearances for Groningen, would we have been able to sign him on the kind of money we did if he’d stayed for another 30-or-so games?  It’s unlikely.

Amido Balde made 27 top flight appearances before arriving here, while Teemu Pukki played 37 times for Schalke – enough to score 8 times but there would have been little game time for Celtic scouts to watch him.

In the summer we concluded that there was a 50-80 game value opportunity.  Below this and you’ll struggle to find a player who has developed sufficiently for our agile scouts to be on the case and to do their work properly.  Above this and any player worth a punt will be packing stands with scouts from all over Europe.

If we’re signing someone without the necessary miles on the clock, he’s a punt and should be considered off strategy.  If we’re singing someone who has been watched by dozens of scouts, chances are, at best, he will be no more than a decent return on our money, there will be no hidden value.

Stefan Johansen has made 67 top flight appearances for Norwegian champions, Stromsgodset.  Enough for him to develop into a player who can attract the most agile to Norway, not enough for him to attract those who seem to use Fifa 14 as their primary recruitment database, so he’s on strategy, as far as our 50-80 game value opportunity theory goes.

I spoke about the earlier home game that season in a previous post.

I remember being in the main stand with thems ,can’t recall why …probably because I couldn’t get a ticket in with Hoops fans or maybe I got a freebie off a neighbour.Worst mistake I ever made…they were vile beyond belief….I left early in case some Hun recognised me.

I stated earlier I can remember George McCluskey scoring in a 1-1 draw that day.

Just checked wiki …..he did score…but in a 3-1 victory…..Doesn’t the old memory play tricks?

Cannie work out yer moniker, thought ye were German and bought fae Dumbarton???? Hieds wasted wi that one but glad the lab worked out. I have a lab/german pointer rescue dog from the Blantyre SSPCA. 4 months old and really troubled when he arrived due to his previous treatment. 13 this year and has proved to be a super dog. We had to work hard with him to gain our trust, but once that hurdle was overcome, about 9 months, he has become the best pet and guardian any householder could ask for. Check with any CQNr who has visited.

Most modern DVD players will be multi-region (or can be made multi-region). Blu-Ray players can be made multi region, but usually only for DVD’s not Blu_rays. Hope that helps. At the last resort, the DVD can be “ripped” and the region coding removed before copying back.

“On the terracing at the Dalmornock end on Saturday there was congregated a gang, thousands strong, including the dregs and scourings of filthy slumdom, unwashed yahoos, jailbirds, night hawks, won’t-works, ‘burroo barnacles’, and pavement pirates, all, or nearly all, in the scarecrow stage of verminous trampdom. This ragged army of insantitary pests was lavishly provided with orange and blue remnants, and these were flaunted in challenge as the football tide flowed this way or that. Practically with out cessation for ninety minutes or more, the vagabond scum kept up a strident howl of the ‘Boyne Water’ chorus. Nothing so designedly provoking, so maliciously insulting, or so beastially ignorant has ever been witnessed even in the wildest exhibitions of Glasgow Orange bigotry…..Blatantly filthy language of the lowest criminal type assailed the shocked ears of decent onlookers. There was no getting away from it, chanted as it was by thousands of voices in bedlamite yells. The stentorian use of filthy language is a crime against the law of the land. Policemen lined the track and listened to the hooligan uproar, yet nothing was done to stop it. The scandal was renewed with increased violence in London Road after the match. Is it possible the blue mob can do just anything and get away with it? Prompt official steps were taken to suppress and prosecute the green brake-club lads who dared to sing ‘The Dear Little Shamrock’ in Paisley Road. Yet thousands of foul-mouthed and blasphemous Orange ruffians are free to run amok over the East End of Glasgow. How do you account for it?”

    How indeed !!!

I thought the fence was only put up when they put the “gate” at the Celtic end turnstiles leading to the Jungle, to stop the jungle overcrowding. Prior to this, many (including myself) used to swap ends at HT every match, huns games excepted.

    Quick Review

This game marked the first Old Firm game between the new young managers Billy McNeill and John Greig who had both been appointed in the summer.

Celtic overcame the odds to defeat Rangers 3-1. The Celts were handicapped by the loss of experienced men Roddy MacDonald and Alfie Conn but replacements Mike Conroy and George McCluskey were excellent.

Celtic took the lead in 2 minutes when Tom McAdam cracked home a tremendous shot after Rangers failed to clear a Glavin free kick. They were 2-0 up after 14 minutes when young McCluskey cut in from the right and fired a low shot past McCloy from a tight angle, the ball skidding past the goalkeeper on the wet surface.

Rangers regrouped after half time when Parlane scored but Celtic increased their lead in 76 minutes when McAdam scored after substitute Joe Craig had shown great determination to escape the clutchesof Tom Forsyth.

Rangers rallied again and were awrded a penalty in 83 minutes but Latchford made a brilliant diving save to deny Alex Miller and it finished 3-1. Champions Rangers remained winless after 4 games in the division with Celtic top with a maximum 8 points.

This marked Joe Craig’s last appearance for Celtic and he signed for Blackburn Rovers a few weeks later for a fee of £50,000.

Ref the first old firm game in 78/9 season.

It was the following midweek that we played our first Anglo Scottish Cup tie in England at Burnley and there was slightly more of a police concern at that one.

An indication of how bad our team was that season was that Burnley of the English second tier beat us comfortably over the 2 legs.

Burnley 78 really was a turning point though and the energy and alignment of hardworking team and real support from the terraces powered us to the final day triumph on 21st May 79.

A great season with a mediocre bunch of players and a passionate but small support in numbers.

I’d take the gamble – some players will handle it, others won’t.

But remember – customs may seize animal porn before it gets to you…

  22. Great to see Billy Brown getting the bullet, a durty low life Hun Bassa if ever there was one, GIRUY Billy, and any lurking Huns too, give hearts there due they are doing it the right way, not like thems,

  23. I would be surprised if our new signing Johansen is not a direct replacement for Ledley. We already have Brown, Mulgrew, (a rapidly improving) Biton, Henderson and Kayal for the central midfield positions. I think we only need four established players for this position (Brown, Johansen, Mulgrew and Biton) and one promising youngster (Henderson). We will also hopefully have Rogic returning in the summer after some game time out on loan and a World Cup behind him. Ledley, and in particular Kayal, now look surplus to requirements.

It’s interesting that there’s still no word on who our primary striking target is. I see Rudnevs left Hamburg on loan to Hannover so that’s one target gone. Some people will believe the Fletcher rumours but I would be almost certain that he’s too expensive for us. Probably the same for Finnbogason at this stage…..especially when the Heerenveen chairman says he wants 8 million for him (they won’t get that but they probably will get 6-7 million for him).

Aron Johansson from AZ looks the most likely of the players we’ve been linked with. The papers have him valued at 2-3 million but for a guy who has scored 18 goals in 32 games this season I would imagine AZ would want at least 4 million for him. If I was a betting man I’d say he’s our number one target this window.

If we do get a new striker, what do we do with all the ones we already have?? Pukki and Balde deserve a bit more time to prove themselves (and their performances in Turkey would back this up). Stokes whilst a very average player) is still our best striker and until others step up to the mark we have to retain him (hence why he was given a new contract). What do we do with Fridjohnsson and Atajic? Should we look at loaning them out for six months?

And Watt of the prodigal son? I was beginning to think that Watt was another flash in the pan and unlikely to do much in the game and then he scores a double just before Christmas in his last league game for Lierse and follows it up with another double in a friendly last week against Heerenveen. It’s a massive 12 months for Watt….hopefully he can kick on and score some goals for Lierse in the second half of the season and come back to Celtic an improved player (with a much improved attitude) in the summer. When he’s playing well he just looks such a powerful, direct finisher….it would be such a shame if he never made it at Celtic!!!

  24. Burnley78….

If you really think about that season we had no expectations of winning the league.

It is testament to the spirit that Big Billy brought to the job.

The Huns knocked out PSV and a very strong Juventus side en route to European Cup Quarter Final under Ham n ‘ Egg, in his first season…..they actually thought they were going on to win it that year. When Cologne beat them in QF,it knocked the stuffing out of them and we took advantage of it with what looked like an inferior team on paper.

The fact we didn’t have European games probably helped us over the line,as the Huns won both cups that year and would have done a treble if they had held on for a draw that night.

What a wonderful feeling that night coming out of Paradise……Will stay with me for the rest of my life.
