Special players make the difference for Celtic

177

The ball from Joto ranged across the field, landing precisely where intended.  So much in football is about the first touch and Kyogo’s did not disappoint.  The ball came from behind him, was allowed to bounce then he cushioned it, simultaneously taking pace off the ball and directing it towards goal.

If the keeper looked stranded, it was because within two touches play moved from possession 70 yards from goal to a shooting opportunity on the edge of the penalty area.  Kyogo rolled the ball between keeper and post to the relief of the 50,000 + crowd.

That moment transformed what was a nervous game, filled by Celtic’s nervy unenforced errors and Ferencvaros’ dogged defending.  Jota’s pass for the second goal was more prosaic but undernotes the contribution he is making to our season.  He later missed a gilt-edged chance, made less noteworthy because it was part of a congregation of missed gilt-edged chances by David Turnbull, twice, and Callum McGregor, from the penalty spot.

Turnbull recovered from his first miss, a fresh air shot from six yards, to bundle the ball over the line.  Ange will doubtlessly ponder that we got away with one after missing a penalty, we will continue to pay a penalty if this weakness is not resolved and a reliable taker found.

We have special players, enjoy them.

Yesterday afternoon’s attendance, during school and daytime working hours, matched any home attendance Oldco or Newco have enjoyed since Roy Aitken scored twice at Ibrox when Celtic took a point there in 1977.  The sheer scale of Celtic is remarkable.

  1. GGHamstring, greedy wee shiote Maloney had no chance of converting that free kick. More so, Sutton and Henke were ready and poised for a decent whipped cross into the danger area.

    Think I’ll leave this here…

“I’m getting to know Kyogo better. He’s an incredible player, one of the best I’ve seen for movements. I saw the pass and he was good enough to take it and score as well. Unfortunately he doesn’t speak English at the moment, so it’s been quite difficult to speak with him. Actually it’s funny because I said to him, if he didn’t learn English then it’s no worries because I will try to learn some Japanese so we can talk. I think I definitely will learn some but I think the most important thing is inside the pitch we are starting to really get to know each other. Game after game, we are going to get better.” – Jota.

    Hail Hail

  3. On penalties: I’m pretty sure the incomparable Jimmy McGrory hated penalties and, if I correctly recall this from Gerry McNee’s nice biography, is thought to have taken only 3 (three); at least one of which (in his final game?) he missed.

Maybe like the fictional Sundance Kid, the ball had to be in motion, before he could do his thing … ?

  4. Good morning cqn from a dark and very cold Garngad, 1st frosty morning here for a while.

We move onto St Johnstone at Parc de Paradise on Saturday another win (4-1 to the leather belts) would be great to keep momentum going.

Do you remember at 5-3, Bobby Murdoch taking the meaningless fifth penalty which the Inter keeper didn’t bother trying to save? A custom that has disappeared.

Sorry but that is not correct.

Dixie took the first kick of the shoot-out and missed. From then on, every Inter penalty put them ahead and every Celtic effort brought them level.

Murdoch converted Celtic’s 5th penalty to make it 4-4. Inter scored with their 5th to make it 5-4 and game over.

I also had a false memory of that penalty shoot out against Inter. I was absolutely certain that Pat McCluskey jogged from the centre circle up to the Inter box and, without stopping, calmly put the ball into the net. I saw the shot out on telly again a few years ago and was absolutely stunned to see Pat stopping and placing the ball on the penalty spot before calmly shooting home. I can’t explain at all how I remembered it differently. The old brain is a funny thing.

  10. FAO DAVID66….

I had Two hospital appointments yesterday morning, and I then headed by Taxi to my Local Pub.

It was my 1st Day oot in 5 weeks…and those 11 or 12 Pints of Beer went doon lovely !

However, as usual I spent far too much on the Pub Juke Box. No one else used it for over 5 hours so I fired into it for approx 5 hours, and played everything from ” The Stranglers” to Dean Martin and Frankie Sinatra.

Wee Frankie the owner and the lovely Barmaid ” Carol” usually enjoy my musical tastes.

HH Mate…I hope that you and the family are all well.
