Sunshine amid murky football shadows

771

Before we get down to less important matters, let me know, did you buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas?

There are so many reasons to be cynical about football people (players, directors and fans alike) in the modern era it is scarcely worth listing them but occasionally a pillar of strength comes along and changes all the rules.

This morning’s headlines that Georgios Samaras has attracted interest from an English slumbering giant is reason enough to highlight the dedication of this model professional.  Georgios arrived at Celtic on loan in January 2008 and was instrumental in the historic league win that year.  When he completed his permanent transfer from Manchester City he took an enormous cut in wages because he wanted to be a Celtic player.

Thanks for the great support for the CQN Annual. You can order online here, time is running out for shipping before Christmas!

His talent and effectiveness has meandered, a bit like those looping runs he would go on with the ball, since then and for a while he was subject to considerable abuse from ‘supporters’.  At one point he had the chance to leave but his message to Celtic was simple, ‘If you want me to stay, I’ll stay and fight for my place.  This is my club’.

The story of the rebirth of Celtic is also the story of the rebirth of Georgios Samaras.  He is the epitome of the modern footballer: strong, skilful and intelligent, he would get into any top squad in Europe.

There is no chance of him going to England, Celtic will not sell him and even if they accepted a bid, the player shows no inclination of wanting to leave.  He is currently prime candidate for Player of the Year and is our most feared player in the Champions League.

You have six days to buy Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in support of Celtic Charity and Teenage Cancer.  This is what we’re all about, don’t talk to me about football until I hear from you on the subject that really matters.

So two years ago ,you were still giving Sammi the thumbs down ,how magnanimous

of you to now change your mind.

Did you ever forgive Henrik for giving away that goal in his first game for us?

  2. The abuse that Sammy gets is nothing to what Tommy Callaghan used to get when I was a lad. Many people thought Jocks had lost his marbles when they saw he was on the team sheet.

Calm your jets man. The greek guy’s English wasn’t great.

It’s a universal sign intended to say “I don’t fancy him as

a player”. Presumably you were psychic enough to realise

Alan Stubbs was going to be a mainstay for years to come

after his 1st season? I certainly didn’t think much of him then

but I realised the next season what a good player he was.

    Is that allowed?

    Good post on Sammi.

He is definitely one of those players who needs to be comfortable in his environment before he performs at his best.

Some players like Wanyama , Mulgrew, Matthews can comfortably adapt to different set ups and perform to a high standard.

By contrast there are others where you need to “build the team to let them show their strengths” and get them at their best. Sammi is an obvious example of this , and I think this season we are now seeing similar with Kelvin Wilson.

When I watch Miku , I detect something similar. He clearly has good attributes , but , I suspect our team would need considerable re-organisation and the upsetting of a winning formula, before he could show his full self. Sadly ( for Miku) , I suspect time won’t allow this to happen & he will be off at Xmas ?

    Thoughts ?

I support the players of Celtic football club,I give new players time to settle,Sammi

helped us win the league with crucial goals on the start of his career with us,second season he was going great guns till he was injured ,a lot of boo bhoys like yourself took umbrage

that he wasn’t scoring goals whilst unfit.

  10. 10pts. in The CL group stage after a tough qualifying period. All this in ‘the modern era’. An incredible achievement.

    Yet here we are.

  11. There are some things that Sammi does so much better than anyone in our team;

….the way he can trap a ball from any direction or height

….his ability to go past a man either by stealth or with great speed

….his power in the air (although accuracy is sometimes lacking :-)

….his energy and drive to the last minute of the game

….his ability to handle abuse from his own fans

….his knack of hitting the VITAL goals

….the respect he gets from his fellow pros

apart from all that, and more, he’s mince :-)

It’s good to see big kelvin is bringing them round too, many wanting rid of him in the last transfer window, in Lenny we trust until we decide to have a pop, and long may it continue.

A support full of unthinking cloned conformists is my biggest fear, if a player is frustrating you let him know including Sammi but don’t let it turn into blind condemnation.

At what point did I say I ever boo’d him at games?

I’ve never done that to any Celtic player.

I stood in the jungle during their 9iar

signing the names of players who were miles from

being worthy of our jersey but who I supported

week in week out because it’s what we do.

That doesn’t mean I’m not entitled to an opinion

Trying to post this on TSFM

It is really important that anyone with a L&G pension, ISA, PEP or savings plan ask them what entity is investing in Rangers international.

Legal & General Investment Management are the vehicle by which most investments into L&G products occur. They will have set up a range of mirror funds into which pension funds and ISAs etc invest the premiums or contributions be it monthly or annually into the investment trust. Even if you are invested in a company pension scheme this could invest in the fund that is proposing to buy shares in the newco

The same applies to Artemis and Insight. I emailled all three on Friday and have only had a reply from Artemis.

They confirmed that it two standard investment trusts plan to invest. No reply from L&G and Insight. If you have any products with these companies you need to ask if they are planning to use your money via trusts to invest in newco

My view is that these companies are very un likely to act as nominees for hidden individual investors – they have decided to take a punt. You might want to ask why

  20. I have to say I can’t make my mind up over Miku and Lassad. From what I’ve seen Lassad is the better player but Miku seems to me to try harder but get frustrated easly. Lassad maybe shades it for me.But then again both seem to be better than Bangura

Aye…Tommy Callaghan. I remember a song that was sung to welcome Tommy as the teams lined up…it was the song `Oh know stop the carnival’ except the words were changed to `Oh no…Tommy Callaghan’.

  24. Tonyg

I like both, Lassad looks as though he has settled in now, he played very well at the weekend.

Miku is taking a little longer to settle, he has great touch and composure, if he can settle in Scotland he will be a hit.

  26. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Such hysteria and happyclapping over a player who has delivered a performance in say 20% of his game time over the past 5 seasons.

I don’t recall a single serious bid ever received for him. Perhaps this is a more realistic explanation as to why he is still here, and not because he is a Celtic ‘fan’.

Yes he has been influential in European games this season, and I’m obviously grateful for that. However, should a Liverpool call with upwards of £8m then the club must sell.

I like the fella. He has a great temprament, and decent attributes such as pace. Alas, he lacks a fire in the belly and a true joy for scoring goals, which could have propelled him onto ‘great’ player status.

Ultimately, I’m content to have him in the squad, but will shed no tears should we swap him for several million in a forthcoming window.

  27. My recollection of Lennon giving Samaras a new contract (with only 6 months left on old one) was that I’d hoped Lennon’s intentions were to raise his resale value for punting in the not too distant future (ala what we did with Petrov).

I’m mighty glad to see big Samaras (and Lennon) have proved me spectacularly wrong.

Big Samaras has turned into an essential member of our 1st team squad, and is on a great run of form.

  28. viewfaethewindae on

    Paul,

Happy to agree with you, however Big Sammy still has his detractors. I was in the Lisbon Lions stand, row FF (seat somewhere around 35, I think) for the Spartak game, the English gentleman behind me spent the whole game abusing the big man, you know who you are! It wasn’t until after the second goal he shut up. Talk about a pain in the posterior, I thought the big man was just Champion.
