Sweeten the medicine, Celtic

991

There is an unusually sombre tempo head of tomorrow’s Champions League last 16 tie, a consequences of the 0-3 reversal at home three weeks ago and the general sentiment around Scottish football this week, but this match is an excellent test for both manager and playing squad.

We are a Champions League team again with aspirations to achieve at this level next season.  Having finally overcome the hoodoo of never having won away from home in the competition, we must use occasions like tomorrow to continue our growth in the competition.

We defended our 18-yard line in the Camp Nou and almost got away with a point.  The plan was wrong in Lisbon, where a talented Benfica controlled midfield and recorded a narrow win, but the win against Spartak in Moscow was deserved.

Celtic might not be able to qualify for the quarter finals but they can win the match tomorrow; this is an achievable objective which would sweeten the inevitable medicine.

  1. Before you go to bed, miracles do happen in football…

Fulham v Juventus, Europa League, 2009/10

Leading 3-1 after the first leg, David Trezeguet struck in the early stages

to put the Italians in the ascendancy and Fulham’s hopes of progressing

    into the quarter-finals looked forlorn.

Roy Hodgson’s team clearly had other ideas – Bobby Zamora and Zolan

Gera struck either side of Fabio Cannavaro’s red card just before the

break. With Juventus on the ropes, Fulham levelled the tie through a

Gera penalty and Clint Dempsey’s superb chip ten minutes from time

completed the most unlikely of comebacks.

  2. A bad decision is a bad decision, if one of ours gets sent off for an innocuous challenge when he can’t see the player coming on hid blind side tomorrow night, and Burley says he deserved it let’s hear you agree with that! Keane has gone way down in my opinion tonight, even Dixon the arsenal man disagreed with him.

  6. ACGR 22.33. Good Post. I reckon your friend has dealt with the silly posts in an extremely restrained manner. I love Celtic Supporters and I hate to see them be criticised but if lads are out of order we cannot ignore it, I have seen thousands of Celtic Supporters on trips abroad the vast vast majority are brilliant but there are from time to time a few messers and sad to say a few thugs as well. We have a great reputation but we need to be vigilant to maintain it.

What is the grand total now? Its been a while since ive asked.

  11. Taken from FIFA Interpretation of Law 12:

“Careless” means that the player has shown a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or that he acted without precaution.

    • No further disciplinary sanction is needed if a foul is judged to be careless

“Reckless” means that the player has acted with complete disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent.

    • A player who plays in a reckless manner must be cautioned

“Using excessive force” means that the player has far exceeded the necessary use of force and is in danger of injuring his opponent.

    • A player who uses excessive force must be sent off

It was reckless at most and therefore a yellow.

  12. Completely disagree with Roy Keane the referree was wrong to award a red card. How many in the crowd, or watching on TV were waiting on a sending off whilst there was a gap and the player was being treated?

Not many if any I’d say.

Keane always was and still is a controversialist and the incident that occurred between Nani and the Madrid player isn’t specifically described in the rule book, and the referee should have used his discretion.

We will never know what would have happened 11 v 11, the decision robbed us of an even game.

  13. I couldn’t justify that tackle by Nani, It was a serious assault on another person, the referee would have been lacking if he had given any other decision.

I flew to Lisbon only to find out that it was an alcohol free flight, when enquiring why we couldn’t buy alcohol, the stewardess said that there had been trouble earlier on in the season, and the plane was diverted to an airport to evict some passengers, they had an excess of booze in their guts, We were punished because others broke the rules.

If people are requested to stop singing, they should stop. The time will come when we are not welcome to travel with certain airlines, and through time we will be lucky to get on any flights when travelling to a football match.

I like to have a drink when travelling, but some Celtic Supporters on another flight, managed to get a full flight punished for their wrongdoing.

That’s the point. Who knows what would have happened, the ref spoiled the game. It stank of a bent decision. Don’t care if it was Man u, or Mouriniho, it stank.

    And conceding the CF will never happen, we both know it, we have to both get there first off >}

I reckon this is more serious that back in the day, times have changed, and people will walk away, football doesn’t have the hold over the weans that it did back when we were weans, the tele and the internet has seen to that.

This mi amigo is make or break time for the club.

Give in to them, we are gone, stand up to them, we will go from strength to strength.

I seriously believe that, I can see what is happening, it all started when the dougie dougie thing kicked off, aye, other things were always going on, but they knew that the tax case was imminent, they knew that something had to be done, the plan was set in motion.

They will destroy the game rather than let us dominate, we both know that.

Time to dust off them note pads and talk to a few activists, you know it makes sense.

    Evening

Re Mourinho’s ” Celtic are Celtic” comment– as soon as I heard that I thought ” I know what he means by that”.

Now feel free to shoot me down.

Mourinho thinks that HE makes a difference to his team. He was asked earlier tonight what Madrid had to do to win the game tonight and his reply was ” Just be MY team”.

He believes that he as a manager can be the deciding factor in a game of 11 versus 11 because he will motivate his team to run faster, jump higher, tackle quicker and so on. He produces teams with a group mentality and a group strength that again he believes is not matched by others– or should I say other coaches.

His comments re Celtic– and he has made comments before— are on similar lines. Celtic as a club that punches or at least can punch above their weight because of a similar group mentality– but our group mentality in many respects comes from the fans– That is why the crowd at Celtic Park on a European Home can — not always— but can make a difference.

I will be honest– I quite like Mourinho– I don’t like the way his teams roll on the floor and all that– but there are others who manage teams that do that and I like them a lot less.

No one is going to fancy drawing Madrid after their results over the last week– they have proven a tough lot to get a result against.

MInd you– they will still get gubbed at Celtic Park if they are unlucky enough to get us in the quarters! ;-0)

    HH

  26. Kojo don’t be jumping on As i thoughts bandwagon. There is a huge difference on what he posted and on what you post. As I thought obviously annoyed reported the incident in an over the top manner. when this was pointed out to him, he apologised. He is obviously a real sound Celt and a real sound guy and I will be looking out for his posts in future.

When I came on this site first I was intrigued both by your style and the nature of your football related posts which I really enjoyed. However over time I realised there was a very nasty streak in many of your posts which you seem to get away with because of the way you post. I reckon that if any other poster said the stuff you say in plain language they would have been banned by now.
