Textbook in Trondheim, hope in our hearts

582

Celtic delivered a textbook performance in securing the win in Trondheim last night.  Rosenborg are bottom of the group and were effectively out of the competition before kick-off, but only a year ago Anderlecht came to Glasgow after five Champions League defeats and wiped the floor with Celtic (Anderlecht remain a poor side, accruing only two points in a weak Europa League group this season).

This was Celtic’s third away win in European group stages, but the second in two seasons.  If we have genuine ambition to progress in Europe, we needed to win games like last night’s.

The contrast between this performance and the one in the same stadium in Augusts’ qualifiers was stark.  In the earlier game Celtic were poor in possession, unable to impose themselves on a Rosenborg team who needed a goal to draw the tie level.  Instead we ground out a 0-0.  Last night, the passing, pace and control from Celtic was vastly better.  Rosenborg didn’t get a sniff.

James Forrest ended a spectacular month by creating the winning goal for Scott Sinclair.  Scott still had plenty to do to guide his header into the top corner of the net.

Defensively Celtic were imperious.  Any anxieties were limited to what potentially could happen when the home side were able to lob a set piece into the box, but chances were limited, giving Craig Gordon one of his easiest games on the road this season.

By full time, the players looked exhausted.  My mind immediately turned to Aberdeen players, who will have watched from the comfort of their homes.  It is easy to say, “Go again”, but players are not machines.  Sunday will be the seventh time they have climbed the domestic mountain in succession.

Legs and minds will be tired.  If Celtic lift the trophy at Hampden, heroics will be required.  But this is Celtic, so we have hope in our hearts.

  1. My house is right under the flight path for the helicopter ambulance. When in RAH I watched it land several times. On two occasions the patients ended up in my ward. From Campbelltown and one of the island’s.

What a resource. Underfunded. True life or death incidents everytime I hear it go over now I say my own wee prayer for them.

It just flew over there. Noisy but so what.

Ryan Christie, is now where he dreamed of being, in Celtic first team

I think given time, he will become even better, saving us millions, as we do not need a new number 8 or 10, as he can play both positions

    Just my opinion

Incidentally I think we should be coaching Jack Hendry into the right back position as well ???

I think Ryan is quality, he’s doing great but it’s only been a month. A few bad games and folk wont be shy in saying he needs dropped. It’s the nature of the beast, so lets see how things develop over the next 6 months. Starting tomorrow, we have a run of really tough games so lets see how everyone does.

If anybody is capable of making something of Jack Hendry it’s BR. Benkovic is levels and levels above Jack and it stands out a mile. Personally i don’t see Hendry as a Celtic right back or a centre half going forward. Ajer is out until the new year so we need to hope Boyata and Benkovic stay fit or we’re in a bit of trouble at the back.

Thanks for the info, I’m 40 mins north so I’ll check the boozers on Federal Hwy and Mizner park in Boca. I have a plan B, which is a Kerry oot and a netbox in the condo which will probably be easier than fighting with the EPL fans.

I saw your post showing the Irish bars – I was in the rí rá in Vegas last year and there is a big poster of the Bay City Rollers in the back lounge FFS!

    Thanks again pal.

Like Jack Hendry, but think his talents are in central defence.

    Whether he makes it…

  7. DD,

“Armstrong was the best Celtic player before he left”.What planet were youvwatching Celtic from?KT,BROONY,just to name two.Hevwas so good,BR,would only use him sparingly, from the bench.I liked Armstrong, but this shit about how great he was is just that.Never be remembered inyears to come.Maybe by you,but I doubt it.

  8. Almere

I will pick up for Cosy Corner Bhoy

I need to pass on your ticket to you as well

I could slo get Yours Gutenberg?

We all sit within a few seats of each other – Cosy corner is same row as me, must be about directly behind you (2 rows)

  9. DAVID 17,

The “Greatest fans in the world”were givingbhim pelters on twitter for his performance on Thursday.Does not take much. One mediocre game, and they are hankering for a return of Armstrong.Well,on here they seem to be.

Cant seem to grasp,he no longer wanted to play for us,so bollox to him.Could not give a toss about him.Christie gets my full support.

  10. The Chelsea CH,seems like a worthy punt.Been well regarded in every cub he has been loaned out to.Gathered great experience, and seems a very level headed boy.A 4 year contract could well nab him.If we dont, someone will.

  11. Hello again all you young rebels.

From a tropical storm lashed Melbourne last night, woke me up

from a rid wine swally so it must have been a beauty.

Out early this morn. for some rolls and there they were up on the

scaffolding with their hoops on, repairing some damage to local

properties, three Celtic brothers who i hadn’t seen in ages.

I always stop and give them a hail hail and got a coybig back, it’s

an omen for the big game i tell ye.

  12. Hopefully we will see history being made tomorrow (not withstanding incompetent and biased officials). Our biggest league cup win goes without saying however arguably our most important league cup final win was in 1997 at Ibrox. Hh

  13. One Celtic player has scored a goal in each of the last 2 LC finals. He has actually scored in the last 3 LC finals in which we appeared ( March 2015, Nov 2016 and Nov 2017). Tomorrow he can score in a 4th successive LC finals that have featured Celtic.

Not bad for someone who has been dismissed by a larg-ish section of the support as an empty jersey.

  14. What is the Stars on

    Gordon

Tomorrow is the biggest game in Brendan Rodgers managerial career.

    FACT!!!!

As some people like to say

  15. SFTB James Forrest had one of his finest games for Celtic in the 2016 LC final against Aberdeen. More of the same tomorrow. Hh

Hopefully Jamesie has recovered from the knock he picked up on Thursday. It seemed to reduce his effectiveness in that game. A fully functioning Jamesie will destroy the sheep.

  17. Just watching The locker Room on CTV of Celtic’s Centenary season

for the umpteenth time bringing back great memories and much

nostalgia watching players like big Roy and Tommy burns again.

CTV gets a lot of criticism some of it deserved but it a godsend for

us overseas bhoys to look back at our clubs rich history, not to

    mention live games.

thought armstrong was great in brendans second year, scored about 18 goals.

great return for a mid field player.

  21. As a follow up to Naomh Eanna I am hoping that my homeland team, Gweedore become the winners of the Ulster club final at Omagh against Monaghan’s Scotstown.

Throw-in’s at 2pm tomorrow- so good luck to Kevin Cassidy and the boys. 43 years since a Donegal team won it.

    Make history tomorrow!

  22. No Aussie bhoys on? MACJAY, DBHOY, WILLIE FERNIE.

What about you PADDYMACOZ hope your up and getting

those flags sorted for our bbq next Sunday.

  23. Looking forward to the game. No ticket unfortunately so will be watching in the house.

I’m going for 3 nil with Sinclair to get the 1st.

  24. What is the Stars on

I liked Armstrong, was sorry to see him go but Christie looks a better player. And 7 million in the bank

God bless Peter Lawwell keeping the green flag flying despite the malcontents begrudgers and naysayers
