The players, the manager and the board

503

Celtic controlled the first half at Easter Road without really troubling Hibernian.  That control shattered when Nir Bitton and, more culpably, Scott Brown, combined to concede an unnecessary foul then penalty.  The subsequent lack of urgency to follow Scott Bain’s save and daydreaming at the second Hibs goal was typical Celtic season 2020-21.

You were not surprised at the outcome.  Before the game I wrote a piece on Newco’s accounts (it is important and I will pick it up during the week) but I knew when I was writing it there was a more than decent chance we would have to address this matter instead.

The players have first responsibility to resolve matters, then the manager, then the board.  Doubtless there have been several iterations of attempted fixes, but none have been effective. It is not too late to rescue our season but it will be soon.

  1. A fiver for your thoughts on

WGS and Malay MCKay until end of season

That’s where the famous Celtic Football Club are now?

Everton are in a different ball-park in terms of the finances and environment they operate in. Also worth noting that Ancelotti’s career was on a downward trajectory.

Rafa is on huge money in China (£12m a year) and recently brushed off the idea of going to West Ham or Everton.

Rafa will not be coming to Scotland any time soon.

  3. WGS until the end of the season wouldn’t massively disappoint me. He’s a better coach than Lennon and would get an instant reaction from a set of players who are playing in second gear.

I’d lean towards WGS. Firstly, I think he’s a better coach.

Secondly, we desperately need a change to shake us out of this malaise. A different voice on the training ground might just kick-start our season.

  7. MH- Pearson is as arrogant as you could find,Mackay left the SFA due to cutbacks….unless Lawwell tapped him up,a la Lennon at Hibs….allegedly

After a great start with EFC, Ancelotti was getting dogs abuse on Toffeeweb early afternoon, all through the Fulham game. Can’t get his team to defend. Sound familiar?

    A Fiver,

Would you rather have WGS or NFL until the end of the season?

    ——

WGS every day of the week

How did we get to here?

Needing interim manager, no club development, no squad development

    Total shambles

  11. Paddy Power has Eddie Howe 13/10 Fav, but that would just be a few punters throwing a bit of money on him rather than any news,

the fact they have opened a book is possibly significant.

Feel very sorry for Lenny that there is a book open on who replaces him, but that is the way of the World.

No Individual is bigger than the Club.

    Now look what you’ve started!

My only comment for the moment is that Mackay would be an absolute disaster for Celtic.

WGS might, just might, turn the ship around, but I think we have already left it too late.

As one of the significant proportion who suffer from anxiety/depression, I’m a wee bit disappointed that there’s little reference to Neil’s mental health in the massive number of contributions here and elsewhere on the web. Neil has done a real service by acknowledging his mental health issues and I sincerely thank him for that.

Neil Lennon has been a credit to the club and to himself for the way he’s spoken out about these issues, and how football both ignores and exacerbates issues around this. I have a friend who works in metal health, as part of her role involves research into causes and triggers of bipolar episodes and more generally of depression/anxiety she reached out to Lenny asking if he would consider helping. She expected little, but was astounded by his engagement and commitment to helping. He continues to this day in helping her in delivering talks & lectures. She’s not a football fan but speaks of Lenny in almost reverential terms.

For moths now, Neil’s body language, body shape and general demeanour have suggested something to fundamentally wrong but has anyone commented? More critically, has anyone reached out to Neil? Are we honest and aware enough in the 21st century that mental health is an illness, not a weakness?

I think the problem here is that none of us know if Neil is having trouble in this regard. And most people don’t want to pry. It’s also very easy for confirmation bias to creep in – where we suspect something and then attribute every visual clue or comment as confirmation there’s an issue. It’s a very sensitive area. That said – Celtic are very, very well equipped to take care of staff mental health issues. If he is having problems, rest assured the club will be assisting him.

Neil is a Celtic hero and he is damaging his legacy by continuing in this manner with strange selections, tactics, intransigence and negative communications. Yes, he should go but have we done enough to check exactly how he is? He won’t want sympathy but he could have responded to appropriate investigation and support.

This is the confirmation bias I was referring to. You see a squad pick as odd and are wondering if that’s due to his mental health. It’s also what promotes the stigma associated with suffering from mental health issues: that everything. you do is over analysed or judged almost from a position of concern for someones sanity. If I can give a different, but similarish example – A friend of mine was in a car accident , had a spinal injury and ended up in a wheelchair. We’d go out for lunch, and I kid you not, service staff would ask ME if he took sugar in his tea, or if he needed assistance. That became more of an issue for my friend than the physical injury.

I guess the above is a long way of saying – Let Neil’s dignity remain. Judge him no differently to any other manager in this situation – and that’s to say: with respect and appreciation of his ability to carry out his job. If he makes mistakes judge him the same as others and don’t second guess his mental health. Again, if Neil needs help I have no doubt at all that he’ll ask for it, and that the club will take very good care of him.

I feel sorry for him but to be fair, he should have walked after Prague – that really was the point of no return and his words and body language suggested he knew it too. Since then, we’ve fallen a further two points behind Sevco and the after-match comments remain the same.

He looks like a man who’s waiting to be pushed.

  17. all I know is that Hibs are rank and we are the rotten, enough is enough and we can’t continue this demise from the start we had over thems , terrible state of affairs.

Philip Cocu…. Is available…. He was much touted on here as a messiah……. Lasted 15 games in Turkey and has now taken Derby to the brink in the championship….. But the experts would have had him in a flash… Tactical genius apparently…

Is this meant to be funny?

  19. Paddypower has Strachan as second-favourite at 5/1.

Is this the “word from Ireland” we were hearing about? 🧐

  20. How much would it cost to pay him off? Less than we paid for Soro or Shved and the money would have more impact.

  21. CORKCELT on 22ND NOVEMBER 2020 10:32 PM

GeeBee, If he walks he gets zilch, if he is sacked he gets a pay off.

Yeah like Gordon Strachan got, when he left us back in around 2009.

I heard wee GS, got three million pounds handshake back then.

I am sure the book on the next Celtic manager has been open for weeks, and Eddie Howe has been favourite for most of that time, I don’t think it signifies a move for him, more that he is out of work and possibly an obvious choice in that respect

  23. Amid the foment, I wondered if CelticByNumbers had anything on Lenny’s achievements/stats. They do:

    https://celticbynumberscom.ipage.com/lennons-celtic-an-appraisal-by-numbers/

It’s a month old now (four weeks is a long time when yer going for 10 eh?) but the article surprised me by finding Lenny’s record and the performances were all on the up! Felings ain’t facts, it seemed.

I sure hope CBN do an update for NOW so we there’s some rational basis to inform whether we should be feeling fine or foaming at the mouth.

PS: Dunnit seem a long time ago that sides were being split over their appointment of a Scouse rookie? HH
