The stock of corporate knowledge

349

We are all looking forward to big changes in the football department.  Players, manager, coaches and scouts will arrive at Lennoxtown in the coming months with the specific aim of improving the performance of the football department.

Such change brings risks, but just to the culture of the club, which is up for renewal every week and saw plenty of change in the autumn, but to the stock of corporate knowledge.  One of the failings of John Barnes short-lived experience was his failure to understand the risks when visiting places like Tannadice.  Some travel north thinking it will be all too easy, remember Joey Barton, who was nutmegged at Ibrox during a defeat to Hamilton Accies.

If today’s story on John Kennedy being promoted to work with Eddie Howe is true, he will add a couple of decade’s experience of how Scottish football works to the new management team.  I also hear Eddie was impressed by John.  Of course, sticking it to them on Sunday will not do any harm.

    Why isn’t he here?

He has a team to rebuild and his own reputation to protect.

He isn’t in a job and would surely want to give himself the

best chance possible of a good start next season.

Appreciate the reply so a couple of quick points

    1) You have not evidenced your claims re Labour Party cheering the death announcements of the 1916 Easter rebellion

    2) I am well aware of the country’s involvement in taking sides on Communist insurgencies in the Far East, Middle East and Africa (Greece was a continuation of policies already set by Churchill but included shamelsss acts nonetheless)

    3) “You seem to think that the killing of millions of Koreans (roughly 20% of the population of N. Korea were killed) was OK because of a “murderous communist invasion”

This is a projection by you of my views. I made no such statement. However, I stand by the view that it was a Communist invasion, where Mao sacrificed huge numbers of poorly trained and armed peasants in attempting to set up a puppet regime in Norrth Korea. There is no equity of sides to be had in choosing betweeen the admittedly martial-democracy of S. Korea and the brutal dead hand dictatorship of N. Korea and China. The Domino theory had some validity though Ho Chi Min’s movement in Vietnam was more saveable than was Mao’s or Kim-il-Sung’s. British Governments blundered in the Phillipines and Indonesia but saving South Korea was worthwhile.

    4) “You say that the Left in the UK has always been anti-colonial. That depends on what you mean by the Left. A small minority of the Labour Party was anti-colonial and anti-war, while the vast majority has cherished the Empire.”

I did not state this. I said clearly that, for the most part, the Left was anti-colonial and the right was pro-Colonial. That is an obvious truism. Support for getting out of the Empire largely came from the left and suppport for protecting it largely came from the right. I also said that we cannot judge past politicians by the standards of today. Harold Wilson kept us out of Vietnam. Pressure from the left ended National Service. Britain got back to being a Liberal Democracy post-WW2.

Blair’s war in Iraq (and Afghanistn) was not for colonial conquest but in support of perceived allies in the US. He has never adequately explained his motivations but I suspect he was frightened by the Islamic resurgence, though invading Iraq and toppling Gaddafi was a poor way of combating Al Qaeda, ISIS or Daesh. Whatever his motivation, he ruined the Labour Party (though, intersstingly, in Scotland, Labour lost more voters because we stupidly shared a platform with the Tories at the Referendum, rather than because of Iraq.

    5) “However, I think you’re right about Sturgeon and co. not being in a hurry to get independence (unlike the Salmond faction). ”

Sorry about attributing you to the Sturgeon faction, I assumed you had been voting for them before you transferred to Alba- are you from the Tommy Sheridan/Trot side then?

It showed just how much it meant to the players. And make no mistake it was no gimme. Hibs were a very good side back then, and while we did not need to win we could not afford to lose on the day.

*Correct we didnae need tae win but we couldnae afford tae lose either, we were only 1 point ahead of deidco who had middle of the table East Fife at home.

At that time there was a tv arrangement where Sportscene showed games on a Saturday night and Scotsport on the Sunday afternoon, however this was deidco’s 100th anniversary season so for the first time in my memory the biased broadcasting association had 2 sets of cameras at the games, 1 at eyepox and the other Easter Road in anticipation of seeing our run ending at SIAR.

They had dropped a point the week before up at the Pen, in fact a late “he used tae be a hun” goal staved off defeat, meanwhile we were gubbin the Red Lichties at home, although it took 4 second half goals to do that.

The scenes of joy when the hun result came through meant with a +20 GD in our favour we only needed a draw in our final game, easier said than done against a fine Hibbee side that contained the likes of Bremner, Schaedler, Stanton, Edwards, O’Rourke, Gordon, Cropley and Duncan. John Blackley was out injured.

Our side was no bad tae Ally Hunter, Danny and Brogie, Chopper, Big Billy and the genius that was big George, the wee mhan, Dixie, Kenny, the quiet assassin with big Tid on the left replacing the injured Buzz Bomb, Harry Harry was our sub.

Not one of the current side could claim a place in either team, Broonie at best may make the subs bench, for his ould side that is.

As you can imagine tickets were at a premium however my da managed tae get a hold of a few so off we went with 3 of his mates and a ginger bottle full of whisky which was quite common in the Dumbarton area.

We found a pub close to the ground which ended up mobbed and us locked in. As we were leaving my da went tae the bar for a Kerry oot.

Sitting in the seated area behind the goal he opens the bag, Norseman Lager, WTF is this was the astonished cry. Norsemen at that time was the only pint I had left behind in a pub, it was billy cotton. Didnae stop up drinking it though lol.

We were magnificent that day in front of a packed Easter Road filled predominately with Celtic fhans. Yet the Hibbees pushed us all the way especially in the first half, however, when Pat Stanton went off injured early in the second half and missing the influential John Blackley there was only going to be one winner, especially with Dixie and Kenny marauding through the middle, oh how the Leith louts must have been sick of the sight of the former playing against his favourite opposition.

Walking down the road singing “hello hello eight in a row” that afternoon we passed the injured grinning John Blackley in his car.

Finding it hard tae get out of the city my da’s pal being a travelling salesman on the east coast took us via Dunfermline, where we stopped for a drink with celebrating Pars fans, they had just clinched promotion that afternoon, eventually crossing Loch Lomond where it’s a burn, a novel way tae get home but who cared, we were the champions once again.

The point about Labour and the Easter Rising is made in the essay to which I provided a link. I have to admit that the author does not provide a reference for his claim, though given that Labour, like all European socialist parties, supported WWI, it seems plausible.

I can’t agree with any of your justifications for Labour’s involvement in anti-colonial wars (not only against communist but also nationalist movements) and certainly not with what I consider to be obfuscations about Blair and Iraq. However, to pursue this would lead too far on a Celtic football blog.

I’m a socialist. Not a Trot (aren’t they all in Labour now like Ernie?).

Yes, Wilson deserves a bit of credit for keeping out of the Vietnam war, though it was more for practical reasons than out of principle. He never condemned the US.

WOW that was some hell of a number of wrong deductions based upon a 26 word sentence.

Firstly I have no idea how many people on here support which party and to be honest I do not care first and foremost this is a football blog and thats why I am here. Secondly JHB in particular posts an unsolicited attack on the independence movement here every single day and has done for months, I don’t see anything like that level of anti union posting but I do understand my own prejudices may blind me to those posts. Thirdly I don’t believe pro independence views are being suppressed and I certainly am not claiming any kind of victim hood I was merely indicating that I’ve had 3/4 posts deleted over a long time on this site and they were all posts where I was trying to highlight the lack of truth or honesty in some unionist posts. My gripe is that the rules for whatever reason seem to be applied with no clarity and I find it strange.

On the “false flag posters designed to re-inforce SNP views by presenting a caricature of Labour Party views” statement, that is very odd. To me it indicates real paranoia unless you have evidence to prove it.

With all that in mind I still stand 100% behind my earlier comment: I’ve never posted anything political on this site other than in response to the Unionist cabal and their sectarian attacks on the ordinary people of Scotland.

Maybe if I was to post it again I would not have added cabal.

    Nice talking to you.

  8. CELTIC40ME on 29TH APRIL 2021 3:59 PM

Are you advocating that we only spend on transfers in,p what we generate in transfers out – i.e. a neutral spending position. A perfectly reasonable point of view but do you think it is on that premise we ate basing our search to attract a top new manager?

What figure will our sales bring in and are we over-estimating the worth of the likes of Edouard, Ajer & Christie – apparently our most saleable assets?

Will it be enough to rebuild the squad in order we challenge seriously next season?

If the above is the case we will still carry some debt based on running costs due to Covid- reduced revenue this season and probably next. What level of debt will be sanctioned?

If you are a season-ticket holder being asked to renew, surely these are legitimate questions to ask.

  9. From Juventus scouts to Manchester City transfer “gurus” to John Kennedy.

I was hoping the pain of losing 10IAR might be tempered by a big reset – not more jobs for the boys. Will Strachan be kept on?

  10. 79CAPS on 29TH APRIL 2021 3:41 PM

Disregard previous post, just caught up with the reference in the Newsinger essay.

    No source given.

Questionable in what purports to be an academic article.

It’s worth remembering though that most of the revolutionary Left, never mind the Parliamentary Left were wrong footed by the Easter Rising. There was a lot of ‘Whit’s the goalie dain, Tam?’ type reactions regarding Connolly’s participation. The general view was that nationalism was the enemy of internationalism. The notion that nationalism could be a progressive movement in oppressed nations (as developed by Lenin and Connolly) was still to gain traction.

What’s amusing nowadays is those who attempt to cast Scotland and the Scottish people as being oppressed in order to claim that their nationalism is progressive.

“On the “false flag posters designed to re-inforce SNP views by presenting a caricature of Labour Party views” statement, that is very odd. To me it indicates real paranoia unless you have evidence to prove it.”

    My evidence is weak-ish

We had the appearance of a very similar narrative poster at the time of the last referendum, who disappeared as soon as it was over.

It is unlikely, but possible as a long shot, that an active Labour Party member would refer to Comrade Corbyn.

It is unlikely, and much less possible, that a Labour Party member would complain about people shouting abuse at Boris.

Both these attitudes are the wet-dream caricature of a Labour Unionist Man from an SNP standpoint- you yourself outed him as a Tory- and he has re-inforced St. Stiv’s in his intention to vote for Independence-

so how strong is your paranoia compared to mine?

I get that and agree to a point, I just assumed he was a plant and not a very good one but was certainly not here to provoke pro independence feeling. To be honest the content of most of his posts can be read in the Express on line.

My main gripe with the poster is the constant sectarian references these really push my buttons. I have been calling him a tory to get a reaction because if he was genuinely a labour supporter he was have put me right but he has not so my assumption is that he’s an old fashioned sectarian troll.
