The tens of millions Rangers denied SPL clubs

885

Last year we attempted to quantify the money other SPL clubs were denied by Rangers improperly registering football players – on the assumption that being found guilty of improperly registering football players was actually worthy of punishment.

Below is an excerpt of the article and figures:

Some of the losses were easier to calculate than others.  For example, it was easy to calculate that when Rangers won the title in 2009 with improperly registered players, earning automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage, they denied Celtic £15m European earnings, plus £340k SPL prize money. Other losses are less clear, specifically when a club was denied a place in a qualifying round for the Champions League or Uefa Cup, which they may or may not have progressed from.

We have established three figures for each club in the SPL during the season just finished, to cover the period from 2000 to 2012:

Minimum loss:
The absolute minimum each club was denied from European and SPL prize money as a result of Rangers finishing above them with ineligible players.

Weighted loss:
The figure based on Scottish clubs gaining entry to Champions League/Europa League (Uefa Cup) group stages from 20% of their qualifying campaigns (which is slightly less than trend).

Maximum loss:
The maximum a club could have achieved if it qualified for the European group stage it was denied entry to.

Out estimates take no account of the subsequent effect money has on future years.  For example, If Celtic earned an additional £15m from entering the Champions League group stage in 2009-10 their league challenge for that season would have been £15m stronger, and Rangers £15m weaker, potentially resulting in consequences in future years.

This multiplier effect would have benefited Celtic but it would be likely to have a greater effect on other clubs, some of whom would be denied the enormous percentage increase in budget automatic qualification to European group stages would have brought.

Hearts finished immediately behind Celtic and Rangers more often than any other club over the period and suffer the greatest potential losses, even more so than Celtic.  Hibernian, Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell also suffered significant losses.

Several clubs got nowhere near European football over the period, and some of the 11 spent only a few years in the SPL but each club lost over £1m.

Figures for each club are:

Hearts
Maximum: £72.3m
Weighted: £16.3m
Minimum: £6.2m

Celtic
Maximum: £46.7m
Weighted: £21.9m
Minimum: £17.4m

Hibernian
Maximum: £34.8m
Weighted: £8.4m
Minimum: £3.6m

Aberdeen
Maximum: £21.1m
Weighted: £5.5m
Minimum: £2.7m

Dundee United
Maximum: £20.8m
Weighted: £5.2m
Minimum: £2.4m

Motherwell
Maximum: £16.7m
Weighted: £4.4m
Minimum: £2.1m

Kilmarnock
Maximum: £5.1m
Weighted: £1.9m
Minimum: £1.3m

Dunfermline
Maximum: £3.4m
Weighted: £1.8m
Minimum: £1.5m

Inverness
Maximum: £1.3m
Weighted: £1.3m
Minimum: £1.3m

St Johnstone
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

St Mirren
Maximum: £1.1m
Weighted: £1.1m
Minimum: £1.1m

In the event Rangers fielded ineligible players during the period under consideration, which everyone apart from Neil Doncaster knows, and even he will be unable to deny next week, we know the following:

Rangers received a minimum of £40.9m which should have gone to the 11 other clubs, assuming each club lost all their European group stage qualifying campaigns.  This calculation does not include earnings from clubs now in the Scottish Football League, such as Hamilton Accies or [then]Dundee.

If Scottish clubs progressed to the group stages of European competition on only 20% of their qualifying campaigns the loss would be £69.0m.

The figure for total potential losses if clubs successfully progressed to every European group stage is, as the figure for 100% failure, more illustrative than likely, but the maximum cost to the 11 SPL clubs is £224.6m.

You can read our calculations here. European income figures were sources from Uefa data.

The people who really matter in this entire debacle are those who buy tickets for Celtic Park, Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle, Tannadice, Fir Park and elsewhere. It is patently clear that the game in Scotland is failing fans and clubs alike. It is time for fans of SPL clubs to unite and move beyond the busted grip of the SFA.

Only SPL fans, working together, can ensure each of clubs has a viable future.

Again,I bow to your superior knowledge on these things, but for once I can trump you-

  4. Had a fairy quick look at some other clubs’ forums (?fora), namely Kilmarnock, Dundee Utd., and Aberdeen.

Universal disgust at the decision with a significant minority referring to ‘Old Firm’ bias rather than Rangers bias. The fact that at least in terms of silverware we have lost out the most seems to have escaped them. For once I do feel sympathy for Hearts given Paul’s figures.

For any SPL Fans’ Group to work I suspect will require it not to be perceived as Celtic lead. Like it or not, most fans of other clubs cannot be bothered making the distinction. Some may see us as the slightly less ugly of two very ugly sisters while others are merely bigots / Sevco fans without the bus fare. We are not liked by the other 11 SPL clubs, not remotely.

Great to see some numbers around the cheating.

Fans if other clubs will be annoyed, and in particular shareholders and season ticket holders. They should act as a powerful collective, and probably will.

However, right here and now, I am far more interested in what the clubs are going to do?

I have been out most if today – have any of them uttered as much as a sound since lunchtime yesterday?

    Or

Are they still ‘out to lunch’ ?

  6. Thought that Lenny handled himself very well by not biting at the bait being put to him by the reporter (Englishman?).

He made sure that he got in the fact that Rangers had been found guilty of making £47 million in undisclosed payments to players over 11 years…twice!

The bit about us being in Turin for Champions League last 16 and not hiring out our training ground was wicked, but perfectly delivered with not a trace of a smile.

PUMA and ADIDAS famously were two companies formed after the DASSLER brothers,RUDOLF and ADI fell out after the war.

From the WIKIPEDIA page about the former,it seems the tie-up between Puma and the huns-sorry-was kinda pre-ordained,oooooops!

“Both brothers joined the Nazi Party, but Rudolf was slightly closer to the party.”

So there you have it,the huns can give their straight-armed salutes and say it is in recognition of their sponsor.

  12. What evidence is there to support the claim that there was NO competitive advantage to the side payments(not to mention what was the purported rationale if there was no competitive advantage). Surely handy sandy would have to have supported the claim withevidence from the then markets and contracts for football players and for that matter why did LNS not ask for evidence for this claim. Why would a huge club, a mainstay of Scottish culture, a great institution may more money to players if the side payments did not improve the squad. So why was this claim not challenged ?

Organizations promoting fair trade and worker’s rights criticize Puma’s employment practices in their developing world factories, predominantly relating to workers in China, Turkey, El Salvador, and Indonesia.[22][23][24]

Puma, like many globalised corporations, believes that “labour flexibility remains one of the key components to ensure that individual companies survive and grow”. These “flexible” labour practices allow the company to manufacture quickly and cheaply, but often under exploitative conditions.[25]

    Freedom of association

Puma’s 2009 supplier list included close to 350 suppliers, the majority of which are located in Asia, predominately China, followed by Vietnam.[26] In these locations, Puma reports that the rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining have been difficult to enforce.[27] According to human rights and labour organisations,[28] Puma does not have adequate policies in place to encourage suppliers to recognise workers’ union rights. Puma does not require suppliers to allow their workers to form a union, nor does it require suppliers to sign union access agreements.[29]

Puma frequently has short term contracts with its suppliers, which means that at any time it can leave an area, and its workers, if they can source their products more cheaply elsewhere.[30] This lack of stability does not give supplier factories a good incentive to respect workers’ rights. For instance, in 2004 Puma decided to stop ordering garments from the Lian Thai factory in Thailand just after the factory had agreed to cease discrimination against trade union members.[30] In another incident, following the formation of an independent union at one of Puma’s Mexican suppliers, the company cut orders from the factory.[31]

Puma has not taken action to minimise the use of short term contracts,[25] though the prevalence of these contracts creates an atmosphere of economic insecurity and makes it difficult for workers to organise.

    Low wages

In a number of regions, sportswear workers producing for Puma have been increasingly vocal about the serious inadequacy of their wages.[32] Puma has not yet made a full commitment to pay a living wage.[33] Puma is currently undertaking research into finding a practical solution to the problem of low wages in Asia, and is working with suppliers in Indonesia, India, and Cambodia to assess the feasibility of a minimum living wage.[34] Labour organisations, such as the Asia Floor Wage campaign, hope that this process will lead to the implementation of living wages in the future. In the meanwhile, Puma has admitted that it is still trying to achieving full compliance with the minimum wage at a number of its suppliers.[35]
