There will be goals

Dundee have played 12 games since losing 6-0 at Celtic Park in September, scoring in all but one of those occasions. Only Celtic and Aberdeen have kept them out in 21 games this season. They lost five last time out to Ross County (scoring twice), but scored four against Accies the week before. Season tickets at Dens are excellent value for money. There will be goals when Celtic visit tomorrow.

Kane Hemmings scored five of their six goals against County and Accies. He’s a direct player who makes runs from deep into space but a large portion of his goals come as a consequence of defensive errors. In short, he appears to run at defenders in anticipation of them making a mistake, not a wholly unproductive strategy for strikers playing against Celtic this season.

Ronny Deila will be keen Celtic build on the positives from Tynecastle, although the on-going absence of Leigh Griffiths will be a concern. I reckon we would have seen Carlton Cole at some point against Hearts if it were not for the plethora of injuries which restricted the manager’s options. Hearts had done their homework on Nadir Ciftci, who was well marshalled throughout. He can expect a similar night tomorrow.

Partick Thistle’s role in the title race will come into focus over the next week. They are on an excellent run ahead of tomorrow’s visit to Pittodrie at Saturday’s game at Celtic Park, having won their last four league games. You can win two Premium Seat tickets in the Jock Stein Stand for Saturday’s game, courtesy of Magners, if you answer this question:

Who was the last Partick Thistle manager to win four consecutive top flight games?

Email your answer in the SUBJECT line to celticquicknews@gmail.com before 17:00 tomorrow (30th). My Partick Thistle knowledge is limited, so editors decision if final……

And if you are so minded, having read what you’ve done already for Mary’s Meals in 2015, you can donate a £1 or so towards them here. Many thanks…………

Yes, a complete waste, it has been. We could have taken great strides by taking on some calculated risks, knowing that were largely unassailable, putting us at least a decade in front of Der Hunnen.

    However what did Celtic do?

Tinpot manager. Tinpot signings. Tinpot returns.

  2. I’ll say it again….

John Collins is the badly needed boot in the erse that the Celtic dressing room needs….imho.

If ye urny fit….ye shouldny be in the Celtic dressing room.

Ye shouldny be allowed to sign for Celtic if, yer fitness history is dodgy….no matter how big a name the club is that yer coming from….who’s agenda does that ‘suit’ ?

Why waste Celtic managers budget on a ‘reduced’ deal for Derk….after…he’d failed the medical coz….he wizny fit!…FFS!

Commons widny have been allowed anywhere near the dressing room…again…after his Molde tantrum if, Collins was in charge…quite rightly…imho.

    But, powder-puff-puppet-Ronny is in charge so…anything goes…

Commons over stepped the mark with Neil as well…then…tried to play it all doon wi the kiddy-oany-bandages n stuff…aye!

Git rid of the troublemakers….Git Collins in charge…then, we’ll git a Cellic team oan the park…imho.

From what I’m hearing….the died(LOL) huns are, straining at the leash to git right in aboot this, Ronny guys version of Celtic!…only saying.

Don’t shoot the messenger – CSC

Btw…Collins didny ‘lose’ Celtic a £3 million transfer deal….Fergus did that when, he tried to punt Collins to Derby and, Middlesboro coz, Celtic had run oot of money….that situation arose when, Fergus chased all the rebels oot the Parkhead gates coz of ‘his’ wee-mhan-syndrome-issues…imho

Bring back the Jungle to start the rebellion or…Celtic will die a slow death at the hands of the orcs…so sad.

Celtic supporters…fix yer own club….the rest of the game will follow…trust me…I’ve seen the Celtic rune-stones.

Keep Yer Guard Up and….You’ll Never Walk Alone.

    ……bye……

Auldheid my god you are grasping for excuses.

    ———————

No I’m looking for reasons. There is a difference. Excuses (or bullshit) are what folk make when they could have done better but did not by their own volition or misjudgement. In the latter case if they recognise the misjudgement they might end being excused their error depending on the consequences of it and the level of incompetence involved, then again they might not.

Reasons are what prevents a desired outcome being achieved because any reasonable person would find the conditions preventing that outcome acceptable in that if they were in the same position they accept that they themselves, having heard those conditions, could have done no better.

In wondering why Celtic don’t do what would make us all happy and assuming that in fact they are as keen to see Celtic flourish as much as the next supporter I look at what those constraints might be. If I were the one facing them would I do something they are not?

So I try to figure out using reason why they don’t do what we all want and in some cases like communications I think they could do better.

On the matter that got you commenting on my comments ie pointing out that CL qualification had a cost as well as benefit, I had looked at potential cost of CL regular qualification and identified the risks in it. I never said they were not worth taking I said they cannot be discounted . I also asked you for a business plan taking risks into account that would back up what you think should be done as an alternative to Moneyball.

Whilst I’m waiting on it I’ll remind you Moneyball is a consequence of the economics of Scottish football, not an end in itself but a means of reducing the harm to Celtic in a difficult football economic situation. I don’t like it any more than you do but if it cannot be changed then the next best thing is to minimise the harm it causes which means learning from using it.

    ————————————-

Every club faces the same challenges.

How come Celtic are so crap at it?

    —————————

Well actually they are not. We are very good at running a football club according to this.

    http://talksport.com/football/10-most-financially-stable-clubs-football-revealed-150206135135?p=7

Dated Feb 2015 when we were still in Europe and whilst we no longer are, one poor season does not mean we are crap. It means we are having a poor season in Europe in comparison to the one before.

Domestically we are doing fine or is 4iar heading for five not enough and if we were to be realistic enough to accept the role economics play we might find that being a club who is very successfully domestically and competes in Europe at EL level (which means being there after Christmas) we might, like supporters of smaller clubs do, enjoy having a shout at success at that level.

I’m not close to the Board btw but I can understand why you think so. I have experience of managing big projects, managing many staff, latterly in technical areas. So I think on business case lines, I think cost benefit, I can make a cost benefit analysis sing any tune I like just by tweaking some assumptions to provide the outcome I want.

That is why I don’t state my opinion as fact unless I am pretty sure it is and even then I’m aware of how easy it is to find what I want rather than what I’d rather wasn’t.

If it were me I would be a bit more open on the economics and how it affects our strategy and our thinking and how that creates our policies (saves me trying to work out what their thinking is and offering it as an alternative here) but I’d also be aware that some folk are so attached to the idea that The Board and Celtic are two separate entities at war with each other (a notion which I consider more harmful to our future than any other) I’d be afraid that I was just supplying them with ammo to twist to suit their entrenched thinking.

Put it this way: if you mistrust me, so why should I trust you?

Agree with a lot of what you say, and again the but, how the ef can a supposed scout reckon that the likes of Bangura, Balde, Lassad, Puki, Cifcti, Cole, etc etc are actually strikers ?

Take into account the way the game is played in sectarianland and it makes it even worse to think JP has actually recommended these guys, he is a joke, he is costing the club money that we can ill afford.

VvD and VW are the only two that I can recall that have made the difference, the others we have made a few bob on were not on his recommendation.

    Hope everyone is safe.

Very wild, wet and windy still down here. Still dark so it is difficult to assess how bad things really are.

Have the impression that that is mirrored on here by some of the support as to all things Celtic.

  13. Morning all.

Wild and wet outside. I spoke to my mate who lives in Dundee last and his report was it was similar up there. Here’s hoping if tonight’s game is called off then it’s done so at the earliest opportunity.

If it goes ahead, given the weather/conditions and the fact that we’re rather depleted through injuries, I’ll be happy with any sort of win.

  14. HT

Always happy with a win at an away fixture. It is not and never has been predictable that we would win at away fixtures in the SPFL. We have regularly lost points at ICT, United, St. Johnstone and Aberdeen during previous seasons. Our last two away fixtures against Dundee were a 1:1 draw and a 2:0 win so we have no record of blowing this team away on their own pitch.

I’ll be happy with 1:0 too.

P.S. Just checked the Dundee weather forecast and it is predicting the rain will stop around 11am and it will be dry thereafter. The travelling fans should not be facing the worst of it if the pitch has been protected well enough.

  15. Sftb

Sky (I know!) reporting that Commons and Griffiths remain doubtful and that Boyata and Armstrong are unlikely. I’d happily take 1-0.

Ps the forecast I saw predicts heavy rain until 2pm so let’s hope the pitch has decent drainage.

  16. Well, now I’ve seen everything. It is gradually brightening and there are 2 people out walking their dogs. They’re walking round the putting green which is currently doubling as a swimming pool.

  17. Every year at this time I hear about the games postponed due to the weather conditions, unpredictable winds, rains etc.

Why no one has considered six weeks break? The league and Scottish football would be more healthy in my opinion.

Legia Warsaw played 36 games between 10 July and 20 December. Now we have winter break untill early February.

    Celtic played “only” 32 games.

    ——————————————————————————————————————————————————–

I found interesting fact. Both Celtic and Legia did not well this year in LE. Legia fans say we do worse in league becouse of the LE. Our record of the games played just after LE is poor : 6 wins, 4 draws, 2 lost.

Celtic record of the games played just after LE is excellent: 9 wins, 1 draw.

  18. Anyone know a decent roofer who works the southside of Glasgow? Not looking for a re-roofing, more a patch-up job… Couple of tiles blown off last night….

  19. Good morning Mr Z I hope you’re well.

I’d fully support the idea of a winter shutdown and I always thought it was a strange decision to revert to type after it was introduced some years ago.

Regarding your second point, you’re correct, our record domestically immediately after EL games this season has been excellent. Unfortunately, it was the results in many of those EL games which has left some Celtic supporters disappointed.

Throughout a build-up which provided so much hype, passion and humour ahead of Monday’s head-to-head at Ibrox, there was always respect, according to Hibs coach Alan Stubbs.

Which is why, despite the barrage of sectarian singing which assaulted his ears and those tuning in to the TV coverage, he was happy to meet with Rangers boss Mark Warburton after the match for a beer and a blether.

“There was a long build-up to the game,” Stubbs said, explaining why he indulged in so much talk ahead of just 90 minutes of action. “I’ve got no problem with what I said and I’ll stand by it.

“To be champions, you have to deal with different elements, and sometimes that’s not just on the pitch. There’s a lot of expectation around both clubs to get promoted automatically this season. There’s definitely more pressure on Rangers to do that, just because of the stature and size of the club.

“We’re a club that have got the same aspirations. We’re trying to put a spanner in the works. And I’ve got to say there’s been comments from both camps. I think it’s been perceived that it’s been all us, but if you look in the weeks before there were a few comments coming from the Rangers camp as well.”

Stubbs considers noising up rivals to be part and parcel of the battle but he knows everyone has their own way of doing things.

“You have to respect that we may be different characters. Mark is the one who will play things down, I might be a character who plays things up. You don’t want two managers who are drab.

“But I don’t want for me to be made out to be the bad guy. I’ve got a lot of respect for Mark. We had drink and a chat after the game. He’s not my best mate, but I respect him – a lot.”

Many believed there was little evidence of that in the Ibrox stands where sectarian singing provided a sour backing track. It irritated Hibs fans and has been condemned by some observers but while Stubbs finds it an unsavoury side of the game, he chooses to view it as a perverted and misguided demonstration of admiration.

“Listen, it’s a good job I’m quite a laid-back, easy-going type of character,” he said. “You know what, it doesn’t bother me. For me, that’s respect. If they weren’t worried about me they wouldn’t sing about me. They know what we can do to their aspirations. I honestly haven’t got a problem with it. I heard it once, believe it or not, and you saw me on the side of the pitch – I didn’t run back to my dugout. I wasn’t scared of it.

“But I don’t think anyone wants to see that element in the game. We hope that we can move on from that. I think we’ve all seen the wrong side of that in the past and Scottish football doesn’t need that. But, unfortunately, you’ll always get the few that will do it and it will have a negative effect on the club. But there are good people at Rangers and to tar them all with the same brush would be wrong.”

  21. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

The Scottish Professional Football League will wait to see what its match delegate has to say before deciding whether to take action against Rangers over sectarian chanting during Monday’s clash with Hibernian.

The accusation that the banned Billy Boys song could be clearly heard being sung by the home support during the Ladbrokes Championship fixture on Monday has still to be determined by the match delegate

Now the club could face potential punishment if the SPFL’s delegate decides to raise the matter when he submits his report on the match, easily won 4-2 by Mark Warburton’s team.

A league spokesman said: “There was a delegate at the match and we will receive his report in due course. Until we see that report we are not in a position to comment although it should be stressed that listening to songs is not high on his remit”

In 2006, UEFA fined Rangers and also ordered the club to make a public announcement at all their home games pointing out the chanting of the Billy Boys was banned after it was heard during a Champions League clash with Villarreal.

UEFA is not expected to take any action as this is the first time that the Rangers International Football club has had such an accusation.

Under current SPFL rules, clubs are exempt from any punishment so long as the board are satisfied all reasonable and practicable steps were taken to try and ensure acceptable conduct among their supporters.

On that basis, no action was taken in relation to the conduct of Celtic fans at the League Cup semi-final at Hampden last season when songs which fall foul of the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act were heard.

Scottish football clubs have unanimously rejected efforts by the Scottish FA to introduce ‘strict liability’ levels of regulation, in line with Uefa and Fifa, which would hold clubs wholly accountable for the conduct of their fans without any form of mitigation.

Ronny Deila expects to be handed funds to improve his injury-depleted squad as Celtic seek to withstand Aberdeen’s title challenge and prepare for next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

Deila wants Celtic to begin next year like they started this year – on the front foot.

Boosted by the eventual double capture of Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong from Dundee United, Celtic turned the screw on their Pittodrie rivals by embarking on an eight-game winning run in the league.

With injuries to key players such as leading goalscorer Leigh Griffiths and skipper Scott Brown further restricting his personnel options, the onus is on Deila to ensure Celtic recover from a dip in form in which they have dropped five points in their last two games against Motherwell and Hearts. It was the same story this time last year, when they dropped five points in successive games against Dundee United and Ross County. But they bounced back to consolidate their position at the top of the league.

The champions travel to face Dundee tonight while sitting just a point clear of second-placed Aberdeen, who are at home to Partick Thistle. Deila confirmed he is in the process of identifying signing targets for when the transfer window opens later this week.

“Whatever happens we need to strengthen in January and we will work hard on that,” he said.

“You have to get signings who can do better and hopefully get us into Champions League qualification. You have to think long-term but also short-term.

“It’s a tough window because nobody wants to lose their players when they are in the middle of the season and there are not many good players left in Scotland at the right price. It’s always tougher but we did some good transfers last January and hopefully we can do it now as well.”

“There is money,” he added. “Everybody is in the same mind, they know we have to do things. People in the club are prepared to do that. Be prepared, be ready is what I always say.”

Celtic spent a reported £2 million when signing Mackay-Steven and Armstrong at the start of February to narrowly beat the transfer window deadline.

Although both players have found life more difficult this season they were able to make a quick impact at the start of their Celtic careers. Mackay-Steven scored on his debut against Partick Thistle and ended up with four goals by the end of the season. Armstrong also scored on his debut in the same match and struck again against Internazionale shortly afterwards.

After admitting he was relieved to hear Aberdeen wasted the opportunity to go above Celtic in the league by being held 2-2 by Inverness on Saturday, Deila is focused on the up-coming 3 February meeting between the teams.

“We are competitive, we want to win the league as quickly as possible, so when our biggest rival is losing points it’s a bonus for us,” he said.

“I think it’s in my diary,” he added, with reference to the appointment with Aberdeen in just over four weeks’ time. “It’s going to be a big day but, again, there are many games before that. We have the [League Cup] semi-final [v Ross County] coming up before that as well.”

Deila conceded 2015 had been a “rollercoaster” for him as he reflected on his first calendar year as Celtic manager.

“We had a very positive last part of the 2014-15 season,” he said. “A double, a couple of good games in Europe. And then we started well in Europe this season but got a blow against Malmö.

“After that we lost some players. We had to reorganise a little bit and that affected us I think, especially in the defence. The results in Europe weren’t good enough. Having said that, in the league we are in a good position. We are still in everything in Scotland. So sometimes it’s grey, not black or white.”

“I have had a very sore throat from shouting at our defenders during training and I have been taking lemsips and bonbons but the Ronny roar will return. My fans are demanding it”

EX-RANGERS bad boy El Hadji Diouf has reopened his feud with Neil Lennon by branding the former Celtic boss a “d***head”.

The pair had an explosive war of words after clashing in an Old Firm Scottish Cup tie in 2011.

And Diouf insists he took an instant dislike to Lennon when playing for Liverpool against him.

Diouf, below, also renewed his bust-ups with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in an explosive Christmas interview.

The 34-year-old told French magazine So Foot: “I didn’t know Neil Lennon but saw his face and have always hated him. He was at Celtic and I was at Rangers and the two clubs were at war with each other. He is a d***head and I’ve never liked him.

“At the end of the Liverpool-Celtic game in the UEFA Cup he asked me for my shirt but I gave it to him but I found it again in the toilets after he cleaned his derrier on it after a jobby.

“Steven Gerrard is a great club player but an egotist as well. He didn’t care about Liverpool winning – all that mattered for him was getting on the scoresheet.

“The person I would least want to share a hotel room with again is Jamie Carragher. I hate him.

“He was the biggest turkey I’ve seen on a pitch. I found him useless and he snores like an excited pig”
