Watching players on the edge

1018

I like watching a professional perform on the edge. We watched Anthony Stokes do just that at the Cup Final, where despite two superb goals from Gary Hooper, he was clearly head and shoulders above everyone else on the field. This has not always been the way for Anthony, so has too often failed to command a starting place, and live up to the form he promised all those years ago at Falkirk.

Celtic have put a contract in front of him but it will be considerably lighter than the contract Hooper has no intentions of signing. It’s very much up to Anthony now. Deliver and the riches will follow. Don’t bet against him.

Only just catching up on the somewhat demeaning promotion of a football club hiring a new team bus. Every time I see the coach/manager at that club, buses, or to be more precise, Blakey, from On the Buses comes to mind. These people lend themselves to parody so unselfishly.

Coach/Manager

Inspector Blakey

The fascinating part is, only one of the two above was trying to be ridiculous. You enjoy another day of being a Celtic fan.

It’s not my scene either but if you went to Pittodrie in the 80’s and saw the mob they had in the current south stand away end with no colours on you would understand why these guys thought it was required.

It’s a fact of football and whether you like it or not I would suggest it will always be there. I haver read many books on the subject more for my own knowledge. I know where to avoid and I know from reading the Hibs one and living in Edinburgh that the Hibs casuals virtually have the run of the city centre.

The Celtic support have never liked the Celtic Soccer Crew and some of the worst treatment they have had is from the celtic support. I prefer it that way. Casuals are for small town clubs with diddy football teams. You need to be aware they are there though or you could end up in the middle of something messy. The CSC cut their own throats at Easter Road in the 80’s when they lobbed the gas canister in the Hibs end. That was shameful. There was no way the Celtic support were going to put up with them after that no matter who they protected.

Just now I’m reading ‘The Footballer who Could Fly’, by Duncan Hamilton; about going to football with his dad in the 70s.

His dad was a miner who moved from Scotland to Durham forwork, he was a bluenose who switched allegiance to Newcastle.

There are a few [ very positive] references to Celtic in it.

    An uplifting read.

They have bought ESPN and from Aug 1st as far as I know the only way to receive it on Telly in Ireland is through the Setanta Package that I outlined earlier. Maybe you can watch it on laptops or smart phones through different means and maybe there are different deals available in the UK.

I worked and stayed in Aberdeen for a short time during that era.

The Celtic support never needed the CSC to protect them.

The number of casuals in the CSC was minuscule.

The Celtic support rebuked it at it’s height in the 80’s and hopefully any such modern day glamorisation of this group will die a death.

I once read the biggest hiding that the Cardiff casuals ever got was from ordinary scarf wearing Celtic fans , when they attacked the ordinary Celtic supporters in a pub In Cardiff.

The Celtic support doesn’t need a ned following.

I honestly look forward to the day that I can watch Celtic play against Rangers on a level playing field. I want that more than just about anything. Because the day I get to watch that I will know that the day has arrived that my dad died wihing he could’ve lived to see and he won’t see it, he can’t but I hope to my god above that I do because then I will have known equality that my dad did not and all the others who have gone – did not.

Shocked onlookers have told of their

horror after a violent mass brawl broke out

on the Royal Mile in broad daylight.

A group of around 20 men were

involved in the melee, which saw bottles

    hurled, punches thrown and one

combatant kicked in the face as he lay

    on the ground.

    The shocking incident, which occurred

at around 4.30pm in an area usually

    popular with tourists and families,

began in the High Street before it spilled

    into Niddry Street.

It is understood that police are linking

the disturbance to a loyalist march

    which took place earlier.

    Neill Brotherston, manager at Hector

    Russell Kiltmaker, described the incident

as a “running pitched battle” between

    the two groups.

He said: “There was a bunch of guys

who ran into the pub next door and

then came tearing out hurling things.

Members of the public seemed to

disperse pretty quickly. It looked semi-

    organised.

“I just pulled the doors to the shop shut.

It’s not really something you expect at

that time of day or in this part of town.”

It is believed that two men, aged 44 and

    47, suffered minor injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the

incident and are pursuing a positive line

of inquiry in identifying others who

    may have been involved.

Staff who worked in nearby bars and

shops on Saturday said that they noticed

a marked difference in the type of

    customers in the area.

Erin Hennessey, a barmaid who was on

duty at The Royal Mile pub when the

    brawl occurred, said: “Normally it’s

mainly tourists in here, but you could

say we had some interesting customers

on Saturday. You might use the term

    radge.

“I came in at noon and they were

already here, drinking from early on.

They had kids with them but they kept

refusing to order a meal which is against

    the licence.

“They were tough customers, a lot of

them were interested in the Orange

    march.”

Staff in the Ladbrokes bookmakers had

to lock their customer toilets after louts

repeatedly spilled into the shop and

demanded to use them. The incident

    coincided with Armed Forces Day,

which also took place on Saturday.

Hollie Croan, who started her shift at

the Whiski bar and restaurant at 5pm,

saw the aftermath of the fight, after

police had arrived on the scene.

But she said she noticed an unusual level

of drunkards in the area until the early

    hours of yesterday.

“All through the evening there was a

very different tone,” she said. “We’re a

tourist place really. But there were a lot

more people who had been brought out

by the marches. When I started my shift,

the fighting had just finished. There

were police all along the street. I think

there were two or three scraps over the

course of the day. It was bizarre, there

    were hundreds of people standing

    around.

“I would say people were quite drunk.

We didn’t have too much trouble, but I

think if we were a larger bar there

would have been big trouble. There was

a lot more drunk people than we’re used

    to.

“When I finished, there was drunk

people sitting all up the street, spewing

    everywhere. It was pandemonium.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Four

men have arrested and charged with

    alleged assaults following a disturbance

in Niddry Street, Edinburgh on Saturday

    29th June.

    “The men aged 18, 18, 18 and 21 are

scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff

    Court on Tuesday 2nd July.”

Later heading up to game there were a crowd of Barca ultras bedecked in Union Jacks and red hand of Ulster flags taunting Celtic Supporters. One guy got a bit brave and got past a line of Cops and held up a Union Jack right in the face of a Glasgow lad aged about 20. Not sure if the Tim was a boxer or what but as quick as a wink with one punch he decked the Ultra. Happened so fast that the Cops standing yards away didn’t spot who did it. The Tim and his mates just walked on by as if it had nothing to do with them.

  25. Istanbulcelt, The vast majority of Barca fans are brilliant and are very much sympathetic to the Celtic vision and culture. However you get a few eejits everywhere. There were probably 2 dozen of them and they were being hemmed in by a line of Cops as the general Celtic Support was passing up the road. That was the Kennedy/Marshall night and later on we sang and danced with the Barca supporters in Las Ramblas until the early hours.
