We have seen the future

256

Last night’s France-Spain game will surely be marked as one of the most influential friendlies in history. A Fifa sanctioned trial of video refereeing saw a goal for the hosts by Griezmann ruled offside by the video ref, while Spain’s second goal, scored by Deulofeu, was incorrectly flagged by the assistant as offside, only to be ruled a goal after a 40-second consultation with the video ref.

Watching it happen was a lightbulb moment. It’s this easy to get difficult decisions right?

We can moan endlessly about the standard of refereeing in Scotland – and pretty much every other country does the same, but we saw the future last night. Video technology has been used in rugby for years and will soon be an everyday part of football.

The video ref turned what would have been a 1-1 draw into a 0-2 win for Spain, correctly reflecting the goals scored. It’s hard to think of anything that could benefit the game as much. Generations of Celtic fans have dreamed of such oversight and accountability in refereeing.

If only we could have it for Hampden in the semi-final………

I’m not convinced a video ref would have “seen” the Meekings handball. Probably have been obscured by Leigh Griffiths……

  6. Paul 67,

I think video technology is inevitable and should be cautiously welcomed . Especially welcomed by Celtic fans.

However we should also be wary we don’t stem the natural flow of the game and interrupt momentum. I fear certain teams and managers may utilise gamesmanship and deliberately reduce the game to a stop/ start scenario, especially in a two legged match.

We need to be acutely aware that technology should not be used as a tool to cause maximum frustration and result in games lasting over 100 minutes ( Or Fergie Time )

As stated ,a cautionary welcome but continued assessment.

  8. The SFA Video Ref will consist of a Betamax Video Recorder, and the Film Unit used at the 4-2 game in 1979……..Regan and Co will automatically poo poo it as too expensive, Stuart Dougal being dusted down as we speak, saying it will undermine referees….

Its crazy…they are above the law, do what they like without sanction.
